Losses??? I just got my statement and I'm up another 200% I'm doublin' down, baby, and lettin' it ride!

So as long as 7 Nations and one dispossessed people are willing to concede defeat on the issue one nation, the last to arrive, could have peace. There might be a bit of a wait on that.
-
Could that have been possible because Egypt and Jordan were States; Nations with armies, economies, currencies and internationally recognized borders?

No one has yet made the claim, best I can tell. Nigel was simply pondering about the ethics of the attack, a legitimate question I think. In my case if I firmly believed that making remote controlled bomblets out of 5000 pagers and handing them to bad guys who were blended into a civilian population for later detonation would be an effective first step to ending Hezbollah once and for all I suppose I'd think it was ethical maiming and that would include any bystanders. But I don't believe that's going to happen any time soon and I do believe it more likely that more terrorists will be the result. Honestly, I really don't know why it seems so smarmy to me to take out enemies by blinding them and blowing off their fingers when arguably that's better treatment than killing them outright, it just does.

Well, if it's any defense, I never claimed I was making a perfectly rational argument.
-
Are you saying that you wouldn't draw the line anywhere? If not then where would you draw the line?

I was thinking there might be some treaty guidance, CCW Amended Protocol II seems to be the latest, but pretty much as long as your bomb isn't intended for some kids Christmas Stocking it's defensible and even then there are probably workarounds. Apparently if legal equals ethical then intentional maiming is very ethical as long as not too many innocent bystanders are affected.

As the only poster here who, apparently, has actually taken a bite of cat, not eaten because my stomach wasn't helpful, I have to say I'm not surprised it's not on offer at fine restaurants everywhere.

Seriously, no. Now if his ear was nicked by a meteorite I'd be even more disappointed in our imprecise universe, that's for sure. But we should never want, or hope for, any of the ills of our country cured by political assassinations. That is especially true now that we've had such an odious, vindictive, and incompetent jackass like Trump spoiling our record of peaceful transitions.

And he stopped Atlantic Basin Hurricanes, too!

IDF fighters are bombing Lebanon now. It will be interesting to see what the next move is.

They need to just get over it. The reality is that it's always been Jewish land: it is written.

We have never done that in a similar act of terrorism. Oświęcim was another antagonists solution to a perceived problem. Good we defeated that, I'll guess you'll agree.
-
No, I don't, and you missed the point. I listened to a report from a doctor at a Hospital in Beirut describing the injuries; at his hospital they received no fatalities. If the injuries he described are accurate then it seems to me that the pagers detonated at least a few seconds after buzzing. So it wasn't just sending a message there was an added element of cruelty as the hope was they'd have it in front of their faces and held in a hand. That I am not cool with.
-
It's not that I don't get your point and maybe fighting terrorism with terrorism is the solution. Also, it's well known that battles between armies involve weapons that maim, not kill, as they take additional soldiers off the field. But from what I have heard the pagers didn't just go off at the hip. Many wounds were in the face and eyes and included the loss of fingers or a hand. That implies a buzz and then time to see the number. If true, that is unnecessarily cruel, I think.

What Hamas did was horrific and defies understanding by civilized people. I suppose the citizens of Gaza should have known that Hamas would cause them to pay a terrible price eventually. Maybe flattening Gaza will have some good outcome beyond simple vengeance but I don't see it. In any case Israel had no choice but to respond militarily or sue for peace and that will never happen. Today another round of device explosions happened in Lebanon. Maybe we will shortly see if this softening of Hezbollah communications presages something bigger.
-
Yes. I don't think anyone is arguing that collateral damage is unacceptable in every situation. In your example the rocket fired would have potentially killed or injured innocents and the terrorist was in the act of attempting to do just that. They'd be fair game, certainly, and tough luck for the kid. Maybe I'm too much of a namby pamby but I don't see that as equivalent to blindly detonating a bomb not having any guess who might be in the vicinity.
-
And the Israeli track record is spotless? Do you happen to recall how much the nation of Israel paid for the land they now occupy and to whom?
-
Dumb asses.
-
John, in your opinion what gave those folks the inspiration to commit those acts?
-
Intractable doesn't begin to describe the problem. I'm not opposed to killing bad actors who have it coming. Far from it. But I just don't think this sort of attack is helpful. The reality is that the killings will just go on and on until the parties of God no longer have a say in the outcome and our opinions here will matter as much then.
-
Maybe, but when you attack with a weapon that is guaranteed to increase the size of your enemies military force you make a bad trade. By logical extension fire bombing Gaza and Lebanon makes better sense than tit for tat because when the final tally is made fewer innocent bystanders would be killed.
-
We view this differently. The indiscriminate death and maiming of innocent people was the guaranteed result of this bit of cleverness. To my way of thinking, that alone means it was not worth the outcome.
-
Not the parents fault if the parents give a parent purchased AR-15 to their kids.
-
What about the innocent fruit stand guy unknowingly selling a Hezbollah guy an apple? Is he also a legitimate target? If so then why not simply fire bomb the whole shebang and end it now? Well, because it wouldn't end it now, it would only create more opposition, and that's the problem. Sure it was ingenious to make the pagers into bombs and as satisfying as it may be for some to know that hundreds of people, including some Hezbollah actors, are now maimed I am not one. I don't agree with the method because it blindly accepts the maiming and killing of innocent civilians to achieve a very short term gain.
