There are all kinds of extremes. It's just easy to provide healthy food. Why go out of their way to give kids junk to eat for their meals at school? But it's pitiful that if I want my child to have a healthy meal at school, I have to send it with him....and I do. What's funny is that all of the kids want what he's eating. He gets a little junk food in there too, but usually PB&J, grapes, one other fruit, cheese, carrots or tommy toe tomatoes, a yogurt smoothie to drink. Whenever he does eat at school, he gets a horribly unhealthy meal. They do at least give 'em milk to drink. So yeah....healthy eating and living habits in general have to come from home, but it's ridiculous that the schools don't provide more nutritious meals. I hope that this "no cokes in the machines" move isn't just to placate parents who want their children to have healthier choices. I think it's clear that there are problems with our system in the US. To turn a blind eye to the fact that there are problems isn't smart if we want to fix what IS broken. But I don't think there's a single easy answer.... There's definitely a problem with access to health care. Cost is definitely part of the issue, but it's not the whole problem. Infant mortality. I honestly believe that this is much more a social issue than medical, for a number of reasons. If you look at our impoverished areas, you'll find very unhealthy conditions and people who are distrustful of the health care establishment, and only access it when absolutely necessary, and sometimes not then. Children who live in poverty do have access through Medicaid, which is better in some states than others. Infant mortality, as well as morbidity/mortality of the general population, is much higher in this subset of society than in more affluent groups. Lack of access due to the cost of healthcare tends to affect the people who work hard, but don't earn enough money to afford insurance or who work in jobs that don't offer health insurance as a benefit. These are people who often desire quality medical care but are unable to pay out of pocket. They'll usually pay for doctor visits, but then can't afford medications that would save them more serious health problems down the road. In this group, children still (at least in Arkansas) do have pretty good access through social programs that provide insurance to them. linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. Honestly. I think it just depnds on who you are. Some folks in the US have access to the BEST healthcare available (you don't see those with means going off to Canada for healthcare). Other people have access to emergency care only.... There are a lot of crack heads out there who definitely skew the results. There are a lot of crackheads who don't get prenatal care who also skew those infant mortality numbers. There are some really nice cruisers out there besides Harleys. BUT if he really wants a HD, then that's probably what you should try to do if you're gonna buy him a bike. Your bike is such an individual thing. i worked at a wf myself.. it wasn't bad besides the manager was a dick.... i still go to the one i used to work at.......... i love waffle house!!! BWAHAHAHAAAAA! I almost forgot about that Waffle House job....!!! One night I did serve Lee Greenwood....lol. But 2 eggs over medium scattered smothered covered chunked and peppered SHOL' are good! I believe its referred to nowadays as survival of the fittest. It's interesting that in the past, the ability to hang onto weight was a survival advantage, as food supplies were often cyclical, and people had to be able to gain weight when food was available and keep the weight on when food was scarce. These people were selected for then. They were the fittest. I find a mentality that caters to an unhealthy lifestyle because it might hurt someone's feelings to indicate in any way that they have something to correct about their health to be far more careless than one that forces people to look and see that change is necessary for continued existence without special caveats. I think a mentality that supports people in their attempts to live a healthier life and that gives people a break for their shortcomings is more productive. I'm sure that there are people who have struggled with obesity and the attitudes of others who do eventually say, "Fuck it.....deal with it and with me as I am." When faced with people who are so unforgiving, demeaning, and often just downright vicious, a person would have to find SOME way to cope and salvage some self-esteem. As far as forcing people to look and see that change is necessary..... Do you really think that anyone needs to force obese people to recognize that they're fat???? I promise you, you're not enlightening them in any way by being hateful. I think that self-hatred is part of what perpetuates obesity for many, many people. Feeling the anger and hatred from skinny and fit people only makes the problem worse. If a person has done no more than expect to be dealt with as they are, then they really don't deserve the degree of hatred that people spew out at them. linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. Definitely laugh with the sinners. Often sinners are only sinners in the Christians' eyes....and most of what they think constitutes sin, I don't. It's really hard for me to be around the up-tight condescending types, and I think there'd be too many of 'em in the "Saints" circle. That's a bit harsh. For the record I too think its wrong to be mean, as I also think its wrong to selfishly eat oneself into an early grave without a thought to family that's left behind. If my flippant one-liner distracted you from that message, then I apologize. So it's harsh when someone doesn't care how YOU feel....or maybe the one-liner distracted you. After reading NWFlyer's blog entry, I wondered if most of us don't, at some time, feel that same kind of emptiness that she described. We all choose different ways to fill our holes.... Obesity does affect others, but the solution is all on the obese person's shoulders....and it's a problem that's really damn difficult to solve. In my mind, it's less an issue of whose fault it is than how incredibly mean people can be. If a person is obese, then that's a difficult problem all on its own...THAT person's problem. Lack of compassion today is at least as big of a problem, imho. It is alarming that morbid obesity is so commonplace nowadays. Regardless of the cause, denigrating people who are obese won't solve the problem. So how about live and let live if you can't be kind? I think you're assuming a lot about people in the military. How about the person who goes into military service because he/she feels an obligation toward his/her country? Being fulfilled in this obligation by no means negates the sacrifice that one makes.
