My thoughts are that life really isn't all that sacred. Suffering is more of an issue than life, imho. An embryo or fetus in the first half of pregnancy has not developed into a being with the capacity to think or feel. It has no sensorium. Synapses begin to form in the fetal brain between 20-28 weeks....at which point there's actual brain activity of some sort....which is necessary, in my mind, to consider its life something to potentially be protected. linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. The times when I've forgotten to set my brakes it's SO OBVIOUS when I'm packing. I don't understand how someone....espcially a packer....could not notice that the brakes aren't set when he/she's flaking the tail. I've only paid a packer maybe 5 times ever, but that's not the kind of oversight that would be acceptable to me. Brain activity in a developing fetus is a different issue than brain activity in a person on life support. Impulses traveling between neurons in a developing fetus that have never developed any "higher" cognition--self-awareness for instance--just aren't as meaningful as those impulses traveling between neurons in a person's brain who has already lived. In the latter, the brain has developed....the person has had the capacity of thought. In the former, the impulses have never been more than impulses. No thought or meaningful existence has ever been part of that equation. I don't like abortion, but I also don't consider it murder by any stretch to abort a fetus at 10 weeks. At 10 weeks a fetus doesn't have feeling or knowledge....doesn't have qualities that make one human. In the 3rd trimester it does. There is a line in there somewhere. I'd have to review my embryology to discuss it more intelligently.... I think that to make laws about abortion, we need to use objective evidence to discuss when a fetus becomes a person with rights equal to its mother's. Emotion is not sufficient to guide these kinds of decisions, imho....but that's exactly what does guide most of these discussions. -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. No...but we haven't had these little outbreaks in recent years that I know of....or maybe I just wasn't in the know :) Even if a vaccine isn't 100%, we just haven't seen it in recent years. Now there are quite a few cases popping up around here....and this is a small, rural area....not large school districts with lots of kids. Last night I had a nearly-ten-year-old kid, who had received the varicella vaccine at 12 mos., come into the ER with chicken pox. His principal was there too, and he's apparently the 5th kid at his school to be infected this year. According to the principal all of the kids had been vaccinated. We started vaccinating people in '95. This boy would've been vaccinated in '97. Apparently 3 towns around here have had small outbreaks this year. There's been speculation that people might need boosters of this vaccine. Seems that may be the case if this isn't just a fluke. Only in a pathetic woman's reality. A REAL woman doesn't do that.. A REAL mother doesn't do that.. Well, real women and real mothers do that every day. I don't think it's the right choice for them to make, but it is the woman's decision to make nonetheless. It's harmful to the child, no doubt. Even though MOST children born to mothers who smoke during pregnancy do just fine, the incidence of fetal death is definitely higher in this population. How do you know that the general public sees a valid comparison? Well....the point was that people who have not skydived before can understand and accept the risks of high performance landings. I don't think swooping with an uninformed passenger is a good idea. I would consider it acceptable if the passenger wanted to land this way, was informed of the dangers, and accepted the risks. If that's the last thing you want to see, then that's fine, but I don't see that showing people what can happen to them up front is necessarily going to deter them from skydiving. It may deter them from riskier aspects of our sport as their introduction though. Either way if a tandem passenger wanted to swoop, I think it might be acceptable under certain conditions....and part of that is having them understand and accept the risks. linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. You don't have to really understand the aerodynamics of a parachute to see what happens to a person when he screws up a high performance landing. I don't think you give people enough credit for being able to undersand. It's not difficult to understand the dangers inherent in high-performance landings with some simple explanation.
