When I think of a service obligation, I'm thinking of military....which I'd say NO WAY to. Bushjugend....sums it up for me. I think that *most* of the time when we punish our kids, it comes from some kind of fear that they're not gonna do what we want them to do....rather than as a method to guide/direct them in a positive direction. In my experience, kids mostly want to do well, and while they need limits, they don't usually need to be enforced with an iron fist. When children feel respected and valued, they usually respect and value themselves....which translates into kids doing pretty well. edited to add: not that I don't think that well-timed whoopins aren't worthwhile. That's true. I went to a small liberal arts college that was affiliated with the Methodist Church. There were, without a doubt, many more people there who weren't religious than who were. And, except for all the business majors, was a pretty liberal lot all-in-all. I don't know if we all get them or not, but I also think it's getting worse as I get older. Or maybe life's just more stressful and it has nothing to do with getting older. I really, really feel for people who battle depression ALL the time. If I felt year round like I feel in the winter, I don't know how I'd keep on going. It's nice to know that spring is always around the corner when I'm feeling low, though, and that with spring my jovial :) self will return.... I really enjoy riding with him, and "supporting a productive hobby" is a good way to justify spoiling my kid. He's a good kid, though....works hard in school, behaves well.... She doesn't seem to want to get anything done really... except get attention. ... And the anarchy kiddies can shout rant and rave all they want, when they start breaking shit and attacking people who don't agree with them... they should have their asses beat. Is she "breaking shit and attacking people" or is she just trying to get attention? I agree that she shouldn't be allowed to break things that aren't hers or physically attack people.
