Of course there's no surpirse. It sucks. BUT when "peace activists" or whomever go over there to spread their message, they have to understand that they're putting themselves in a position to be mistreated. You know....for years I've thought about getting a tattoo. Never have for the reasons you mentioned. Now that I'm (ahem) approaching 40, I think I might actually get one. But I'm gonna wait a little longer to see if I get over it. What I'm thinking of is the Staff of Aesclepius with color (brown and green) with a pink morning glory vine intertwined. In an inconspicuous place....was thinking maybe on my hip/upper outer thigh. Maybe it's cheesy, but I'm proud of having become a physician as a mom....single mom now. Ditto that. I do think that when the psychologists became so vocal about parenting....about the value of positive reinforcement in parenting and the negative effects of physical punishment on kids....that a lot of parents took that at face value and stopped spanking, stopped disciplining all together, and became buddies with their kids. It's pretty easy to pull out a belt every time your child misbehaves. It's a lot more difficult to provide discipline while minimizing that kind of punishment, but also is probably in the end more effective. How is it not? The kids are being forced to do something (in this case, their "work" is going to school) against their will at the threat of punishment, and they're certainly not getting paid for it... how does that not fit the definition? I hope you don't really believe what you're saying, and are just using it for the sake of argument. Children, having no rights, have to do LOTS of things involuntarily. They aren't allowed to make life-decisions for themselves, so ALL of the choices about them at this age are "involuntary." There was a time when only rich kids could be educated, and the poor kids were put to work, involuntarily, by their parents....real work....labor. Whether it's labor or education, the choice is not the child's to make. Never was. However, when children are deemed by society to be capable of deciding what they wish to do with regards to work/education, they're allowed to make that decision for themselves. At 16 they're still minors, but can choose to quit school to become emancipated, get a job....whatever. At the age that people are capable of choosing, THEN forcing a particular path upon them...military or civil....is a different issue, and the issue of "involuntary servitude" becomes a little more descriptive of the situation. linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. I think you're absolutely right about that....which leads to parents wanting to be buddies. On the positive side, I'm thankful I can express myself directly rather than skulk around the board looking for opportunities to take catty little pot shots at someone I am miffed at. I suppose it's all related to self concept. More the pitty Smile some people simply don't think enough of themselves to directly express their resentment so they harbor that resentment (some times for many years) and peck when they can. All the while, the resentment eats away at them and they are no closer to feeling better about themselves. Speaking generally, of course. Too funny.
