  1. When I'm job hunting, if I don't want to notify my current employer, I'll use a trusted co-worker who will keep their mouth shut to the employer as a reference, and ask them for their cell number to give to the people I'm interviewing with. That way, I have a current reference without jeopardizing my job.
  2. Get your vet to keep him long enough to get a urine sample. Find out what you're dealing with. You may be dealing with repeated UTIs, or maybe crystals/FLUTD, or something else entirely.
  3. Those issues can vary by state. Contact a lawyer in your state and ask. Unless someone here is a lawyer in North Carolina, they cannot give you advice you can rely on.
  4. I went to two different high schools. One taught abstinence only, the other taught comprehensive sex-ed. I got to see both kinds of programs because one school did health (they called it "Family Life" and taught it in religion class) freshman year, and the other school had a full year of health and biology classes sophomore year and covered sex-ed for a whole quarter. The abstinence only program did not cover birth control of any kind or condoms, because you were being taught not to have sex, so you wouldn't be needing that information. The program covered biology, puberty, and the science behind how babies are made. It did not cover how to prevent making babies other than "just say no." There was no homework of any kind beyond a vocabulary workbook that most of us finished in the last ten minutes of class waiting for the bell. Students were taught that the only appropriate time for sex was after marriage. The comprehensive sex-ed program covered everything above (biology, puberty, babies, etc), plus how condoms work (although there was no condom/banana demonstration), how birth control pills work, how IUDs work, natural family planning, and other birth control methods, and presented no moral judgment on any of them, other than saying that abstinence and zero fluid exchange is the only 100% way to prevent pregnancy and STDs. They just gave us the facts about the effectiveness of each method, how each method works, which methods prevent conception, which methods prevent implantation. We were encouraged to discuss what was talked about in class with our parents, and in fact, it was part of our homework. We had discussion questions that our parents had to sign off on to indicate we had talked to them (these were the morality questions, along with whatever else the school thought we should be talking with our parents about). I had some wonderful chats with Mom due to these.
  5. The study seems to commit a classic logical fallacy: mistaking correlation for causation. What they fail to recognize is that situations that tend to increase the startle response, such as being the victim of a crime or serving in the military, also tend to increase the likelihood of a conservative point of view.
  6. The former pose as the latter most of the time. Why would someone who hunts for food pose as someone who hunts for the thrill of killing? That doesn't make any sense! Every hunter I know usually has a large stash of elk or deer jerky or summer sausage. I wouldn't hunt myself (anyone who knows me knows I am far more likely to make a pet out of a deer than shoot it), but I have absolutely no problem with anyone else hunting an animal that is not endangered if they make sure that what is killed is eaten, and I have no problem eating what someone else shoots.
  7. And if a woman were actually in the situation you describe, the hospital administration can make an individual decision to adjust the charges, or the city council could make a motion to make a one-time grant to the hospital. Keep in mind that in the 8 years that Sarah Palin was mayor, there were 5 reported rapes (source: Uniform Crime Reports and Index of Crime in Wasilla in the State of Alaska enforced by Wasilla Police from 1985 to 2005). Wasilla is a small town where cases such as what you describe could easily be dealt with on an individual basis. Imagine the PR nightmare that the city council would have faced in that town if a rape victim had actually had to pay for those tests. The town would have found a way to cover the costs out of public funds if the state or health insurance failed to do so.
  8. I don't see what the big deal is about city officials getting fired when Palin was elected mayor. Those officials typically serve at the pleasure of the person in charge, and it's pretty normal for the new person to clean house, reorganize, and appoint who they want. It's one of the privileges of being the executive, and it happens in every city and state whenever there's a new guy (or gal) in charge. With regards to charging the rape victims for their tests, the reality of it was probably that the city was charging the victims health insurance company or the state's low income health fund for the tests rather than the actual victims. All fee change would have accomplished is that the funds for the tests would have come from the insurance company or the state rather than the limited treasury of a small city. The odds that the actual victims would have paid the costs are slim to none.

  10. One, until you have him/her well trained enough that you can tell him to "down" and he will do so in the middle of play or chase mode. Then, get another dog. Training two at once is harder. Also, the destructive power of puppies increases at an exponential rate.
  11. Here's an article about the bridge. It's in Dickinson Court. http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-then13-2008jul13,1,6678821.column
  12. I have three friends that work at LA City on that train as well. I hope they decided to take off early today.
  13. You know, I've had several chances over the last year or two to get back up in the air for just one jump. The thing is, I'll want to do lots more jumps, and at the time, I didn't have the money, and that one jump would just make it a whole lot worse. Now, I've gotten a raise at work, I've got my cypres, and I just need to get it in my rig and arrange for my recurrency jump.
  14. Hmm.... if it's who I think you're talking about, my advice to her would be: work hard on finding a job so she can use the three AFF jumps she has on account AND afford to finish AFF, get her A license buy gear and keep jumping.
  15. That's a great explanation of why the republican party isn't the answer for libertarians, but no explanation at all as to why the democrats are any better.
  16. There can be different opinions, and then there can be just plain bad advice. You're unlikely to get bad advice from an instructor, so stick to asking them, even if you ask several.
  17. Depends on what kind of question. If it's a technical question, you should be asking your instructors rather than just a random jumper.
  18. I've got all my AFF jumps blogged on my website, but my most important lesson learned was: don't be afraid to ride the plane down if you're not in the right state of mind to make a safe jump. The website is at www.nightingalesnest.net if you want to read the blog.
  19. Karate is a wonderful sport! I'm glad he's enjoying it! Female instructors learn very quickly that they have to be ten times the hard ass a male instructor is just to be taken seriously.
