I rode the plane down at Skydive Hawaii my first jump there. It was really cloudy, the guys spotting could just make out the DZ through a small hole... the ocean is large... so I stayed put. I got off the plane fully expecting to pay for my ride. The DZO gave me a clap on the back and said "that one's on me. I'm soooo happy that you decided to ride down since you don't know the area." No shit. It looks like she hit that bench hard enough to break her neck if she'd hit at the wrong angle... It's not clear whether or not she said something while she was standing there that set the guy off, but her body language didn't look aggressive. Not that any of that matters. I hope this cop is convicted of assault. Owned by Remi #? -

I'm of the same mind. Someone else mentioned it already. I think that this particularly optimistic piece of propaganda comes from someone who is confusing the old SGLI insurance with military benefits. The government does *not* lay out a million dollars for every 10 fatalities to cover air fare and expenses. Would be nice in theory, but it isn't true. I've been family and friends with veterans from WWI until now and a veteran of the Gulf War myself and I've never heard of or seen this 100,000 dollar government benefit. Owned by Remi #?

I'd suggest not reading too much ahead if you're already overwhelmed by the information you have now. Let your instructors introduce new material as it pertains to each new skill you learn. If you *must* read something, start here: http://www.uspa.org/Portals/0/Downloads/Man_SIM_2012.pdf And have FUN Owned by Remi #?

It doesn't matter how long it takes your canopy to open. Just throw your pilot chute above 2500 feet. Owned by Remi #?

The whole point of my mentioning that I smoke is that I disclosed it. They don't have to "find out". Owned by Remi #?

I'd kinda like to see some evidence that you're looking at 300/ month. I'm in a high enough income job that I don't qualify for subsidies, I work for a small company that isn't required to pay for my insurance but they still give me the option to buy it, I'm 50, I smoke, and neither my job offered insurance or my ACA options cost $300 a month. This is the only thing you've posted to this thread... so if you meant that *you* posted to the wrong thread... WTF? And if you meant the the OP posted to the wrong thread... how is that even possible? Owned by Remi #?

The differences in canopy performance / reaction isn't linear, and the change from 170 to 150 is where is starts to be *a lot* different than going from a 210 to a 190 or a 190 to a 170. PD recommends a max exit weight of 165 lbs for an advanced pilot and 195 lbs for an expert pilot on the Sabre2 150. That's about the same with any other manufacture on a similar canopy. At fewer than 40 jumps, you aren't advanced or expert. Think about a 150 when you have a couple of hundred jumps minimum. ETA: What canopy you can fly well and safely isn't so much about standing up landings accurately under ideal conditions. It's hell of a lot more about being able to handle the problems that *will* happen. Fly a canopy that you can maneuver safely under bad conditions. Have you ever made a low flat turn to avoid an obstacle? If no, then fly the 170 until you do. Get an idea how it handles when you're stressed. Then demo a 150 and try the same thing up high. Did the 150 react so much more sharply that it would have hurt you? If yes, practice finessing that response on the 170 until you're ready. Can you downwind your 170 into a tight spot and land well? Landing well not meaning standing up as much as it means not making a Kalrigan sized hole in the side of a barn? Don't downsize because you can land what you have when everything is perfect. Downsize (and you don't ever have to) because you've got every bit of experience possible out of what you have now. Owned by Remi #?

Couples with diff political views, can they work?
labrys replied to JohnnyMarko's topic in Speakers Corner
I'm a fairly liberal, atheist, lesbian. I've worked 8-10 hours a day for almost 5 years with a conservative, born again Christian, straight guy. We get along grandly and I consider him one of the best friends I've ever had. We go out after work for beers a bunch. We look out for each other, share advice, laugh a ton, and respect each other and we really don't have any investment like a relationship. It's workable. Owned by Remi #? -
Isn't the whole point of the grandfathered plans that you can still have approved coverage while essentially "waiving" some of the extra protections that are mandated in new plans? Owned by Remi #?

What Skymama said. That's very normal and your instructors are aware that it happens to many people and they're watching you for signs of a problem. One of your first jobs after exiting the airplane is to read your altimeter and then look at each of your instructors and tell them what it said. That isn't because your instructors care about your altitude so soon after exit... it's because they want to see you being responsive and doing what you've been trained to do. I don't remember the first 10-15 seconds of my first AFF jump, but I did get video which shows me doing everything I was trained to do :-D Owned by Remi #?

No hackey at pull time = reserve ride
labrys replied to shorehambeach's topic in Safety and Training
He could have tried 3 times, then tried to reorganize his rig in-flight, then dropped his reserve handle and flailed around until he managed to deploy his reserve with the cable. Not that I'd recommend that method Owned by Remi #? -
Radios are simply not necessary. This is true, but they still aren't necessary. It sounds like you had a bad experience at DZ number 2. Have you tried to calmly and reasonably convey your concerns to the DZO or manager? A well presented criticism can sometimes start the ball rolling on improvements. Owned by Remi #?
