I can attest to the Sig...nice handgun, smooth recoil. I have a p229 .40cal at home. Only used it a few times at a shooting range. So fun! But, I never really wanted a gun in the first place. Oh, if I could only remember what Scott said about flying in brakes....why didn't I write this down? If I recall, it was said that flying in brakes (from 1/4 to 3/4) into the wind will flatten the glide and cause the canopy to travel further than leaving it in full glide. And, in a no wind situation, flying in brakes will cause the canopy to land short of the intended target? Or have I remembered this backward? Insight, please, billvon! So true! I can't stay at the dz for very long looking up at cloudless, blue skies....listening to the caravan or otter as it taxis past....listening to the sliders flapping in the wind....nope, not very long before I'm charging a jump, gearing up, and taking a one-way plane ride to altitude. Ah, calculus...I spent many a night crying over that stuff! I didn't get an A, either, despite all the effort I put into Cal I and II. I know it's frustrating not to get the grade you worked so hard for, but it's important to remember that you learned some good information. What you retain is more important, in the long run, than the letter grade you earned. You passed it, you passed it well, and you can move on to the next challenge. Celebrate what you know and what you gained...let the rest slide. It's a small thing in the grand scheme of the world. And, if all else fails...you can join me! I stayed on radio for my landings until jump 14. I, too, injured myself early in AFF and the subsequent fear had me grabbing a radio on every jump. What I finally realized was that I was using the radio too much. I was becoming too dependent on it. I knew what I needed to do, but I also knew that if I was making a mistake my instructor would be in my ear to help keep me safe. Finally, I just had to go for it and trust myself. My suggestion is to check the winds before your first off radio jump. Make a flight plan with your instructor. You will be in your holding area by xxx altitude. At 1000 you will start your downwind leg and you will turn crosswind at xxx feet (turning at a specific landmark) and then you will turn on final at xxx feet and another landmark. Remember to look out, not down....use flags, other people, whatever to help judge your altitude. Then give it a good, full flare and land. Visualize yourself doing this and visualize yourself doing well. Trust that you know what you need to do to get on the ground safely. And when you trust yourself, do it. You can get off of radio! Just remember the lessons you learned on your bad landings and visualize yourself doing a good landing. Prepare thoroughly before you jump and you should be fine!
