Another sleepless night turned into a 3 hour walk for me tonight. It's beautiful out. The moon is HUGE and bright, the stars too. It's cool out, just a little windy, a few clouds out there. I walked past two small owls and a possum. The owls were so cute! One was only five feet from me. I love nights. It's my favorite time of day, so quiet...mostly everyone sleeping. Great time to think, not think, listen to music, walk around, whatever. I love it all. So, there's no real point here other than to say...it's 3:30am and Fort Lauderdale is beautiful tonight. I was sent a link about the surgery. She died. Bled to death and suffered multiple heart attacks. I'm so sorry to read of her death. I was very hopeful the surgeons would be successful. It would have been an amazing thing if she would have survived. It's such a difficult position to be in. The surgery was necessary, but such an incredible risk. And I've got to go with WrongWay on Gods and Generals...excellent movie. Should definitely be on the list. Oh, and I hear Das Boot and Thin Red Line were also very well done - historically accurate. Does Pearl Harbour really belong on this list? I mean, I never saw it, but from all the romantic hype, i get the urge to start singing, "one of these things is not like the other". You know....interesting that you posted the pic of the little girl. I've been following this story with a great deal of interest. Did you know that there have only been 8 documented cases of craniopagus parasiticus? No one has ever attempted surgery to correct the condition either. True to its name, craniopagus parasticus means that there is a fusion of skulls between twins, one otherwise normal and one undeveloped. The undeveloped twin becomes parasitic in that it adversely affects the host, in this case, the normal twin. The second head on baby Rebeca has rudimentary features, an imperfectly developed brain, and blood vessels. Rebeca has grown from 7 pounds to 10 pounds since her birth, but the second head is putting pressure on her brain and is taking valuable nutrients from her. Surgery is still being considered for her, but it is believed to be very necessary for her continued growth and survival. Doctors from UCLA's Mattel Children's Hospital have traveled to Santo Domingo to examine her and determine the best course of action. If surgery does occur, it will require two teams of nine volunteer doctors working in 12 hours shifts to remove the parasitic fusion. The surgery was planned for early Feb. I've been busy so I have missed some of the latests news on it. It's very, very interesting to me and I am hopeful that success will be met by the physicians and for the baby and her family. This wouldn't be the case if the tears and drama didn't sell. WE need the drama, that's why the streets were clogged with cars and people where the little girls body was found. That's why her family needs to request privacy. It's sick and I don't understand it. The media are the pushers, but we're the ones with the addiction. Maybe I understood it before I became a paramedic. Now, I don't. So many times, there was an accident, a tragedy, death, dismemberment, blood, body parts. And I had to push people out of the way just so I could do my job. All so people could see it up close and personal. Why?? Does it make life more interesting if you get to witness a dead person, see the mother crumpled on the ground sobbing, smell the blood? I know death, I've seen what it does to the living, and that knowledge is what makes me struggle to understand the lack of respect shown people in their time of grief and sadness. Curiousity and intrigue about death and dying are one thing. It's natural to be curious and intrigued, but when people start acting this disrepectfully, something is wrong. Not to hijack the thread, but can I just say amen to that? I love flowers, roses are beautiful. BUT, on Valentine's day, I don't want them. It makes me mad that there is such a ridiculous mark up on the flowers and they always seem to die within a day or two of me receiving them. I appreciate the thoughtfulness, but I would rather not see my man getting hit so hard in the wallet for roses on v-day. That being said...I have said it's not necessary to buy me anything, but I do like being remembered on v-day. It doesn't have to cost much of anything either. A card, a special song, some good company over dinner, a nice night spent together...something like that would make me happy. Now since craichead said no...promised the earth will continue moving along without disruption if you don't buy anything, well, i'd take her word for it, man.
