Background check? Only if you want to buy a gun.
airdvr replied to airdvr's topic in Speakers Corner
Just so I'm clear...Wasserman and her ilk are beating the drum for background checks for ammunition purchases. However, she waived a background check on several IT aides. Those aides were were logging into servers of members they didn’t work for, logging in using congressmen’s personal usernames, uploading data off the House network, and behaving in ways that suggested “nefarious purposes” and that “steps are being taken to conceal their activity.” This from the person who described cyber breaches as an "act of war". I've never said background checks aren't a great idea. I support them. You obviously believe that these checks are only for others, and aren't really required for politicians you happen to like. This thread is typical of the liberal spin. You guys blow so much hot air at a topic that it becomes obvious that you aren't interested in discussing near as much as you are in camouflage. I'm still confused. In what way do you see Bill defending anyone? In any case I agree that better pre-employment checks should have been done here. How does that affect gun background purchase checks? Are you trying to make a case against Wasserman or against background checks? Stop being obtuse. You all know this is a dig at Wasserman. Wanted to make sure you understood that conservatives don't have the market cornered on hypocrisy. Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne -

Nice try Bill...how about people who want background checks ought to do background checks. Are you seriously defending this POS? Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne -

If you area proponent of checks for things like ammunition (Wasserman) perhaps you should consider cleaning your own house first. I'll lend you my glasses if you can't see the irony here. Also, the esstemed Ms. Wasserman added...The former Democratic National Committee chairwoman suggested last year that the accusations against Imran might be because of Islamophobia. “As a mother, a Jew, and a member of Congress,” she stuck by him, she said. What? Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne -

You are absolutely correct Bill. We should disregard background checks altogether. BTW...Wasserman Schultz: background checks needed for gun ammo purchases Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne -

Reality says that is not true. It was simply old, uneducated, white people who put Trump in office; along with the out-dated Electoral College. Jerry Baumchen I didn't know you voted for him Jerry... Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne

I've always felt that as people age and get closer to dying they turn to the church in fear. Fear of death has always been a huge marketing tool. You know...the heaven and hell thing. As far as the boomer thing goes I'm at the end of the boom (born in 1958). I wonder what all the assisted living facilities and mega-churches will do when we're all dead. True...and I agree with you however, the general consensus is these programs are supposed to be better than a human driver. Surprised there isn't some sort of FLIR that might have detected this. Remember, while we're informed the general population doesn't get why planes fly, they just know they do and trust they won't die in one. Now they see this video... Please don't dent the planet. On a related note. My 2017 Toyota Rav4 has a Lane Departure Assist function. If you drift to close to the edges of the lane without your turn signal it beeps and steers you back to center. You actually have to fight a bit to change lanes without the signal. I'm curious to see if I take my hands off the wheel whether it would keep me in the lane unassisted. I'm assuming that it employs at least some of the tech a self driver does. Anyways, the other morning we were driving into the sun, with the glare from the road making vis difficult. The LDA system couldn't see through the glare and didn't try to correct when I changed lanes. I think we've a bit further to go with this tech. Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne

I think it's a natural progression as one ages to look back at 'how things used to be' and wax poetic. I'd love to run away sometimes and hide in the woods too. Ron is fortunate enough to be able to do that. Ron, do you have any children? If so, what do they think of your lifestyle? Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne

After watching the complete series I'm torn between the idea that the Bhagwan's vision was corrupted by Sheela, or his vision was a scam from the beginning. Many leaders, religious or otherwise make great strides promising it to those who believe they don't have it. I think, more than anything they allowed the authorities to get involved when they failed to separate church and state. Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne

Fascinating doc on Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and his founding of a city in Oregon. I was a toad learning how not to bounce when this was happening. I don't recall this story. https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2018/03/wild-wild-country-the-mindboggling-story-of-the-cult-next-door/555791/ Please don't dent the planet. True with the exception of needing to describe the activity. Di you think, had she been in the bathroom she would have felt the need to tell us she was evacuating her bowels? Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne

Sometimes symptoms must be treated concurrently with the underlying disease. No argument from me there. But in the real world your suggested treatment will only divide the country even more. Guns are about control. I think law abiding gun owners like to feel they have some semblance of control over a government that has shown it's willingness to disregard it's people in favor of big business. Now we all know that your typical AR won't be worth a hill of beans if the government decided that you shouldn't exist anymore. Ask the Weavers or the Branch Davidians. Please don't dent the planet. We're not that fucking special. What makes the gun owners more powerful than the non-gun-owners? Is it their willingness to use their guns to "defend their rights?" I understand the second amendment (I participate). But all the posturing just makes the gun owners look like assholes who are willing to threaten people for wanting to be able to worry less about immediate violence. And remember that rule -- never threaten someone with a gun if you're not willing to shoot them. And to all the people who don't want any guns around? Well, there are people on the right who don't want any evidence of non-Christians, or homosexuality, etc. That doesn't work for them, and it doesn't work for you. This "guns are the new hammer in a world full of nails" approach is BS, but they do exist. Wendy P. I agree Wendy...I'm simply observing. I don't own any guns and don't feel the need to. My son OTOH has started a nice collection of firearms, including an AR style weapon. I want to believe he's a responsible owner. I'm in favor of some changes; bump stocks should be outlawed, magazine size limited. Some of the other ideas adapted by other countries might be a good idea but will only have the effect of solidifying the resistance. None of this will stop anyone who intends to harm others with firearms. I believe the problem isn't the weapons so much as it is our society. We glorify killing in movies, TV, and games. Have you seen the John Wick franchise? Either way, in another 20 years most of us will be gone and forgotten. Fatalistic view? Yup. Please don't dent the planet. Destinations by Roxanne
