Jack Johnson has been a hero of mine for a long time. Ken Burns did a great documentary for PBS...I watch it every time it comes on TV. i wish someone would put together a feature film that tells the story...since most people won't watch the documentary. There are a lot of inspirational stories about boxers. Unfortunately the antics of a freak like Mike Tyson have turned so many people off. Sad, because his story is pretty incredible too. The story of Joe Louis and Max Schmeling is another great one. The movie, Joe and Max, is a pretty accurate...and a pretty well put together film. it's not as incredible as the Jack Johnson story...but still pretty amazing.

it will happen every 100 years...since you're only using the last two digits of the year! And a similar thing will happen at 02:03:04 on 05/06/07 03:04:05 on 06/07/08 04:05:06 on 07/08/09 and the mother of all sequences 12:34:56 on 7/8/90

I've learned a few things about back pain over the past few years. 1. Ice for the first 24 hours will help minimize swelling. After that it is pretty useless. 2. A heating pad works better that ice...but it dehydrates the muscles. Moist heat is only way to go. a hot tub or a hot bath is ideal. I've also used a towel soaked it hot water. When the towel cools down, dip it in hot water again. I dip my towel every 5 minutes to keep it hot. After 15 minutes of moist heat, I stretch my back and hip flexors. 3. When your lower back is messed up your hamstrings compensate for it. When I started to stretch my hamstrings I noticed a difference the next day. I also notice an increase in back pain when i forget to stretch my hamstrings in the morning. 4. spend the money on a good 20 minute massage. Have them split the time between you lower back and your hamstrings. Drink a lot of water after the massage.

Is there any research available that might help me estimate how much protien my body can process before you start excreting unused protien? I've seen daily protien intake recommedations of 0.5 - 1.25g of protien per pound of lean muscle mass...depending on how active you are. I've always wondered how realistic those numbers are. Yes, I know that I should ask a registered dietician...but I like to research this stuff on my own.

Speed skaters' ridiculously oversized quadriceps
DrewGPM replied to peacefuljeffrey's topic in The Bonfire
Jimmy the Greek didn't in trouble for talking about big thighs..he got in trouble forwas making a point about black athletes. Since most skaters are white, his comments seem very out of place in this conversation. "The black is a better athlete to begin with because he's been bred to be that way -- because of his high thighs and big thighs that goes up into his back, and they can jump higher and run faster because of their bigger thighs." The validity of that could be a thread of it's own...I just wanted to point that race has nothing to with this topic. And yes..those speed skaters have HUGE thighs. My brothers college roommate trained with Dan Jansen and Bonnie Blair back in the mid-90's. If you think those thighs look big on TV, you shuold see them in person...they are freakish! Nice people...but you can't help but stare at those legs. -
You're not being selfish, you're just being 21. At that age most people haven't figured out that actions have consequences. What you do in Acapulco will have consequences...regardless of whether you are in a relationship or just thinking about being a relationship. So you gotta ask her first. It's the only way to do it. It might turns out that she doesn't want to be exclusive with you. In that case, you'll be free to do what you want in Acapulco. No guilt, no regrets, no problems. If you don't ask, you won't know for sure. Since you are expecting that she will say yes, you need to behave like a guy with a girlfriend back home. You can't do anything that would ruin your budding relationship. I'm sure she knows what spring break is all about. Odds are pretty good that anything you do down there will get back to her. One drunk co-ed down there could kill this relationship before it even starts. When you get back, she better say yes. Otherwise you just did spring break like a married man AND you don't even have a girlfriend. That would suck. So ask her before you go.

http://www.webmd.com/hw/thyroid_disorders/aa34887.asp list a rare side affect of hypothyroidism as weight gain of 10 pounds or less. This condition does make it difficult for you to lose weight....but it does not make you fatter. the 10-20 pound gain listed as a possible affect of this are from fluid retention...not from packing more fat on to your body. The site you listed talks about difficulty losing weight, but nothing about the condition causing you to gain weight. If you are fat, this condition will make it tough to lose weight. If you are not fat, this condition will not make you fat. As a fat person, I know why i'm fat...i ate too much food for a long time. Now that I am trying to lose the weight, the effort is producing little results. Thanks to this discussion I know that there may be a reason why it is so tough. I am going to see my doctor and request that I be tested for hypothyroidism. If I have it, it explains my difficulty in losing weight. But there is no indication that it caused my weight gain. thyroid condition causing me to be fat....unlikely thyroid condition making it tough for me to lose fat...very possible Especially given my recurring bouts with bronchitis.

According to the mayo clinic website, http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/hypothyroidism/DS00353 "Many people attribute their weight gain to an underactive thyroid, but this is true only in a few cases. Hypothyroidism will rarely cause you to gain more than 10 to 20 pounds — most of which is fluid"

Lobbyists can be very useful in government. When a bill comes up on the wild salmon fishing industry, most people are pretty clueless of the issues. Lobbyist from both sides of the issue can educate the congressmen and senators on the subject. It gets unethical is when money changes hands. I want you to vote for my side of the story, so I donate to your campaign...that's too close to buying my vote. It has got to stop. I like the idea of putting all campaign donations in to a general election fund. All the contributions gets split evenly among the candidates. Everone spends the same amount of money the election, that's a fair fight. I also like term limits. Twelve years in a row is enough time to get things done. Two terms in the senate, six terms in congress. After that, thanks for your service...let someone else take a turn. If you think you can get more done, I'd let you try running again, but you gotta take at least one term off. You might still end up a guy like Ted Kennedy servng for 30+ years...but it won't be continuous. He'd also have to fight to win an election every once in a while.

Horse Whisperer was out three years before that. If you waited 'till Ghost World to call dibs you are in line way after me. She had that look that just told me she was gonna be something to watch...but the fantasies were worth the wait!

Maybe it's just me, but reading this thread worries me. Some of you guys seem to think that everyone who attends the CPC meets is doing so as part of a grand plan to go pro. That is a HUGE mistake, IMHO. There are a lot of fun jumpers who are great canopy pilots, but have no idea whether they want to go pro yet because they have not competed before. Andyman is one of those guys. He's a damn good swooper, but does he love it enough to consider a pro card? Hopefully we'll find out during the 2006 season. Not every canopy pilot wants to be on the PST. Just like not every belly flyer wants to be on Airspeed and not every freeflyer wants to compete at Nationals. The NSL found a great system to allow hard core guys and weekend fun team compete in 4-way. Many of the people who started out on one of those fun team are now training on serious teams. I hope the CPC will not only offer a plan for you hard core pilots, but also provide a place for guys like Andyman to test the waters. For the guys that want to use the CPC to earn a pro card, then you should be in Colorado at the championships. When you finish in the top 10, either go get that pro card or come back the district and let the local fun jumpers take shot at beating your ass. Some of the best pilots didn't compete this year. Odds are that the next great star in canopy piloting hasn't competed at all yet.

I assume you were on South African Air. They are an affiliate of Delta. I only that because I recieved Delta sky Miles for my entire trip.

According to the Fastrax schedule the Showdown is March 18 & 19.

We flew South African Air a few years ago. They were great, and highly recommended by our South African friends. We had a chicago to atlanta, the direct to Cape Town. But now it looks like they only fly direct to Jo-berg. Right now it's $1,500 to Jo-berg. For an extra $50 I change planes in Jo-berg and go to Cape Town. http://ww1.flysaa.com/saa_home.html

It may not be that you forgot the egg, but that you used the wrong sized egg. The recipe calls for a large egg...if you used a small or medium egg, you're missing out on all that liquid. If that's the problem, add 1/2 and egg white instead the water as I suggested earlier.

Baking is a precise balance, but air temperature and relative humidity will affect the moisture content. Every baking cook book I own mentions that. If your dough is dry and crumbly you can add water to adjust for it. Add it a little at a time...too much moisture is a much bigger problem than not enough. The suggestion to "beat the crap out the stuff" is not great. The more you work a flour dough, the more gluten you create. Gluten is the protien that makes bread tough and chewy...which does NOT make for a good cookie. Start with a one or two tablespoons of water. If you need more, add it a couple tablespoons at a time.
