I am confused by your title as it applies to the abuse/maltreatment of children by their parents. I have been actively involved in the substance use/abuse social culture practically all my life. My father owned a bar for a while and gave me a glass of beer when I was 6 with the instruction, "Don't tell your mother." The thought of living without mood altering chemicals did not occur in my life until I was 41 YO. I have now been straight, clean and sober for 27 years. Knowing that alcohol and other substances were an active part of my life I received a master's in counseling in 1973. At that time I was attempting to remove alcohol by using marijuana and other drugs. It didn't work for me and it won't work for the majority of others. Some people can use all sorts of substances without seemingly lasting affects. These individuals are rare and you never know if you are one of them until you are deep into middle age. It's a crap shoot. Drugs are everywhere in our society and in the world. We will never rid ourselves of the desire. I can tell you this, after all these years I have determined that the desire to use is based on immaturity. A mature individual accepts responsibility as an adult. The degree to which you back off from responsibility by using mood altering substances is the degree to which you refuse to learn something new and take new responsibilities.
