  1. Not sure I buy the bit about generating lift from your body, but Nicks technique definitely seems to work for him!
  2. What was the reasoning given to the videoman for his termination?
  3. The proponants comments seem reasonable to me. No doubt that's proof of his evil to some.
  4. For a large canopy there's no technique difference. Flare and flare WELL, then prepare to land. The only thing to work out is timing... remember - if in doubt, flare a little high and be ready to PLF. Much better that than flaring too low... It'll come.
  5. I'd be interested to see how many trackers go for this approach. I could imagine them rejecting it just because they''re not spending all their dive doing what they want to be doing...
  6. Whae exactly would you have the US / Eu do? You've rambled on about petrochemical economies, but haven't provided any idea of your own. skyrad's right. Nobody's going to war over the Ukraine. That might come back to bite us in the ass eventually if Russia see it as a license to expand more, but for now, it's simply not going to happen. Nobody in the world wants to risk a conflict that could potentially expand into something larger at the moment. That's a fact. So given that fact, what would you do, other than sitting around ringing your hands? Would you say and do nothing? Are you advocating more aggressive military options? Personally, I think either are stupid.
  7. I still find it unlikely that in an effectively infinitely sized universe, with the timescales of billions upon billions of years that civilizations of relatively similar levels of advancement would chance upon each other in the same timeframe. Far more likely one would find amoeba, or extinct civilizations if you're out exploring I'd think.
  8. But if I handcuffed and tossed you into my dungeon just because you didn't leave your cigs at home, you'd think I'm some kind of major asshole... If those were your rules, and I knew them, I wouldn't bring the cigs into your house... Your house. Your rules, and I'd respect that. Or I'd stay away. What I wouldn't do is tell you that the way you're setting up the rules in your area is wrong, just because I don't agree with them. Ok, but let's say you want to stay with your buddy for 6 months who's a tenant of mine where smoking is allowed, but you have to go though my property to get to there. Wouldn't it be more reasonable for me to just let you pass with your cigs in your pocket rather than throwing you into my dungeon? Yup. And that's where the analogy breaks down.

  10. It is my understanding that agreements of reciprocity are a separate issue. Example, if I have a concealed permit in one state and I am travelling to another state with an agreement of reciprocity, why should I be restricted from travelling across a state without such an agreement? The way I see it is you're completely free to do what you want in your state, but if mine has different rules you should need to comply with those to come in. That's only polite... It's a typical 'my house, my rules' situation. If I'm a smoker, and you're not then I'm not going to smoke in your house, you know? A reciprocity agreement that waives non-carry states (even if you're traveling between 'carry' states) is just a way to avoid the laws in place. It wouldn't even be a particularly subtle way to do it.
  11. At our last gun club meeting our state representative and a local sheriff agreed, that is our next legislative goal. Only if the requirements for attaining said permits are common across all states.
  12. Does that not seem WRONG to you? I've been out hiking and gotten lost before and have found myself walking through someone's property before I could ask for directions. I was out groundlaunching a number of years ago when one of our party hurt themselves and we had to try to find help... The idea that I might be SHOT by some paranoid person for an accident or asking for help is terrifying. *Mental note - never go to Georgia.
  13. If I see that, combined with a decrease or at least no rise in gun-related familial shootings / public shootings then that would soften my opinion on guns. As an aside - how does that bill define 'violent crime?' If I punch you are you legally allowed to shoot me? What if I scratch you? What if I slap you? etc etc...
  14. Yup. That one. I still go back and read it occasionally.
  15. I did....my daughter buying beer for her first paid pack job last summer
  16. I hope they've got more than 200 flights... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eyk-XHuOyBM Holy crap but they're close to each other!
  17. Sadly not... wish I was for this. *goes back to mindlessly entering data.
  18. uughh. You're both right. I'm an idiot. Thanks!
  19. Dead simple, but I can't seem to figure it out. I'm trying to get an Excel macro to simply press Alt+PgDn 3 times in a row for me based on the position of the active cell so I can fill in some data, hit a shortcut and have it jump to the next set where I can fill in more data.... I'm assuming I need to use the SendKeys expression but can't get it working. Any VBA folks out there who could help with the code?
  20. Poynter.org is not the same as Dan Poynter. And to be honest, who cares what the whuffo press report or how they report it? Even with a generic script they'll still get it wrong or just make it up entirely if no facts are forthcoming. Why? Because only a tiny tiny percentage of people actually care about the facts of an incident - skydivers. To the rest of the general public it's just a quick sensational story. The details aren't important to them, so they're not important to journalists... If you haven't dealt with the press before I strongly suggest that in every case the best answer is 'no comment' if you ever do. Supplying them with information, even just 'background information' simply gives them a name to add to 'facts' and a story which they'll alter to fit their agenda - and that isn't the accurate reporting of an incident. Here's the generic script a bot can use: A skydiver died today at . The dropzone and skydiving community declined to comment saying an active investigation is underway, but pass on their sympathies to friends and family.
  21. To play devils advocate, if I'm an atheistic owner of a company, why should my opening hours reflect something I don't believe in? People are free not to work for me if they don't like the contract or if they feel it impinges on their religion just as I'm free to set working hours that disassociate religion and business. To imply that I would be doing something morally wrong is typical religious arrogance and just another example 'if you don't believe what I believe your WRONG!' Imagine if I did that with Hindu or Muslim holidays... 'the company will be closed on Eid.' There'd be an outcry about me 'forcing the Islam on people'... hell, I'd probably be shot as a terrorist. But working hours and days are stipulated in the contract of work. To sign it, and then complain when your expectations don't align with it is just pathetic. By all means, shop with companies who reflect your belief. That's cool. But to suggest people who don't comply with your individual belief are doing something wrong is where the bullshit is... I, personally appreciate shops that are open on public holidays and those who work on them. If I go out on those days I give more generous tips than usual - the exception is to people who serve on those days and then complain to me about it as they're serving. ITS YOUR JOB, suck it up. If you don't like it, quit. In a perfect world everyone would be able to find the ideal job which aligns perfectly with their beliefs. If it doesn't, then pick which is more important to you.

  23. Relax. You're overthinking it. Your instructors will tell you what to do, just make sure you have a smile on.
  24. If you've grown up around water it's inconceivable that anyone could not see the danger. It's so obvious to you... but it's like expecting a whuffo to know what's obvious to skydivers. I've just come back from Kauai where the wife and I had to pull 4 different people out of the waves on a non-lifeguarded beach during high surf over 2 weeks. Every one of them was from middle America and none of them had any experience swimming in the ocean. They could all swim, but they simply didn't know what they didn't know - that 15ft surf hits like a truck unless you know what you're doing... They weren't drowning (yet), but they were all either stunned or stuck in the surf zone and in danger of being washed onto the rocks. Fortunately for them the missus was a lifeguard and I've grown up on the ocean. I've seen it time and time again - the waves look all soft an fluffy until you're under them. Then you're fucked. The advice for tourists is the same as ours for newbies. If only the leathery locals are in the water, it's best to wait it out. That article is a great read for people regularly around water. Thanks!
