  1. A couple spring to mind. The Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale http://www.alfabb.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/alfa-romeo-33-stradale.jpg A 1968 Chevvy Corvette Coupe http://static.cargurus.com/images/site/2007/10/06/10/59/1968_chevrolet_corvette_coupe-pic-31876.jpeg I've never been a fan of the super modern hyper cars. They're brilliant pieces of engineering and technically amazing, but don't look beautiful to me. They lack soul because they're designed just for performance.
  2. *** To share his predilection for freefalling with the world, Carl wore a helmet-mounted 16mm camera for the majority of his jumps, /quote] Talk about your snag hazards!
  3. 1) Relax... Give yourself time to get to your plane, make connections etc. Make the journey part of the trip. Being stressed out AS you're getting on a plane sucks. 2) Hydrate. Airports are the only place where it's socially acceptable to drink at 7am. Don't fall into that trap - you'll feel like crap getting off. 3) Noise cancelling headphones. 4) For long flights, carry a change of socks / underwear in your carry on. Changing halfway through a flight instantly makes you feel better. 5) Don't let other passengers stress you out. I'm really bad at this - arseholes who have no thought of other people so bring fish burritos onto a 7am flight, or who put jackets flat into the overhead bin space. GRR. Accept it. People are arseholes in public. find your zen place and don't let them wreck it for you.
  4. That is a god-awful bit of CRW... You could see the collision coming for about 2 minutes. At least they both had matchy matchy canopies and Go-Pros though.
  5. He got his other arm broken back at the dropzone...? Hopefully.
  6. That's about how long my current sailboat is... They've come a long way! My dad won a competition in the 80's to design a sail for Old Spice for the original Windsurfer - the big long board with the giant triangular sail... They actually made that sail up for him and gave it to him as a prize, and I learnt to sail on it. By the mid 90's, short boards and cambered shaped sails were standard and that's what I ended up having fun with, but man, that original was awsome to sail in the right conditions... Like a classic car, it was twitchy, difficult and had a personality, but fantastic. I've still got it in storage.
  7. Before ANY of that, what happened to looking out of the fucking aircraft before you exit? 15 seconds of obliviousness... Green light? EXIT!!! That's what I would have done differently. Other than that, good decision on the chop. He tried his control drills, didn't like what he had and took Plan B. Well taught, well trained, well executed for the EP. However, Far, far too much focus on following the chopped main, and far too closely.
  8. Rogue Brewery is worth a beer. Good chocolate there too.
  9. What if they were wrongly convicted of a crime that put them in prison in the first place and killed another inmate when they were in there? there are just too many grey areas for something as final as the death penalty (IMO). It only morally works with 100% certainty, and that's the issue for me. I have no particular moral problem with killing a murderer or rapist. I do have massive issues with accidentally killing the wrong person for it, and my insistence on the latter outweighs the logic of the former. It has to.
  10. How many mistakes like this need to be caught until something changes? Probably not until a rich white guy is wrongly murdered by the state.
  11. Sounds like a great call from your instructor. Have you told him about the additional nerves? That's not a bad idea. He might give you a bit of extra support and put you out in ideal conditions for your first jump. That said, eventually you just have to get over it by jumping.
  12. Whatever action was taken, the opposition party would say it was the wrong one. Even if it worked.
  13. Some cretin blew themselves up and set fire to our condo building while making that a couple of months ago.
  14. I'd be nervous as hell about a 'should' in that situation. I'd be concerned that in deflating the chopper reserve lines / riser would entangle the main lines and now you've got a streamer. For me, more fabric is a better backup plan. But that's based on the idea that I'm not going to get away with a perfect landing in any case. Once I've accepted that I'm going to get hurt, it's just a case of avoiding getting killed...
  15. The sick thing is that this isn't even the first time that exactly this has happened. there was a case about 6 or 7 years ago where an 8 year old boy was firing an uzi at some gun show, lost control and blew his own head off. http://www.nbcnews.com/id/27399337/ns/us_news-life/t/boy-accidentally-kills-self-gun-show/#.U_4lymOVvnw Just like we don't give crossbraced canopies to newbies, don't give giant guns to toddlers... If I'm being nice about it it's inappropriate at best. If I'm being me, it's fucking moronic.
  16. That doesn't mean they'll have the same IP address. Each ISP has a massive pool of IP addresses for different regional areas which they can allocate from, and each pool is unique. If you have a dynamic IP address (one which changes within the pool allocated by your ISP regularly), there is the possibility of you getting an IP address which another dz.commer in your locale has been banned with, but that's a tiny, tiny chance.
  17. I think the Blue Man Group might get a bit of credit for the idea... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26REYsR0K_I Bonus points: Which greenie DZ.commer used this track in one of their Year End videos?
  18. Short interviews with some smokejumpers in California complete with GoPro footage. http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-28890070 Man, those landing sites are gnarly. Hills, wind and plenty of rocks to break ankles. I'd still like to have my Sabre for that type of jump but it's interesting that on their website they go out of they way to say Too many people swooping the fire line?
  19. This reminds me of a typical teenage girls passive-aggressive facebook status.
  20. Sadly it won't make a blind bit of difference. It'll go on the camera incidents list, and those who already know better will cite it as an example of camera distraction leading to a double AAD save. Everyone who previously said there is no evidence of cameras affecting jumping will continue to make bullshit excuses about why the video isn't valid, doesn't apply to them or isn't the fault of the camera. It won't change a single person's mind.
  21. So long as the Greenies are neutered to appease the motorheads who never like them to begin with, I think that's a fair compromise.
  22. A successful relationship is full of compromises. 'I'll be away every weekend for 7 months of the year' is a pretty big starting caveat for any relationship, particularly when the subtext can easily be read as '(doing something I enjoy more than you)'. 'You can join me if you want' usually comes across in the worst possible way as well. ('I can put up with you if I have to...) You may think skydivers are the best people in the world to hang out with but you have to understand that we're a) usually super intense and type A, and b) typically talk about nothing other than skydiving. Imagine is she forced you to go to an event full of people you didn't get on with, who talked incessantly about stuff you have no interest in. Is that your fault? If you're THAT into skydiving, you need to find someone who is either just as into it as you, or has their own thing.
  23. Bill's got my thought process down I think. I'd definitely mess with it less than a typical bipane. Is it flying stable? If so, then very, very gently aim for the nearest large open area I think I'll hit with no inputs. I wouldn't try and fly it around. If they're squirrely, I'd try and induce a downplane and cut away then hope like hell the main leaves cleanly and I'd probably need a new pair of pants when I landed.
  24. Will people who don't know anything (and I mean being professionally trained) about biochemistry / psychiatry / medicine please stay the hell out of these threads? Or at least refrain from posting. Just because you read something on the internet, or saw it on the news does not make it OK to give people advice on medical matters. Depression is a really complex subject and making inane comments like there have been a few times in this thread is not only stupid, it's fucking dangerous. A friend of a friend killed themselves after coming off medication on the advice of family members exactly as has been provided in here. I hope they feel perpetually guilty. We tell people not to learn skydiving on the internet. Don't learn medical treatments on here either. Don't give medical advice unless you're a professional in the field or have first hand experience, and even then limit it to 'this is what worked / didn't work for me. YMMV'.
