  5. Very cool video - thanks for posting it SoFPiDaRF - School of Fast Progress in Downsizing and Radical Flying. Because nobody knows your skills better than you.
  6. Was it consistent? I mean was it noticed repeatedly on jump after jump on the same canopies with the same type of turn? This is my opinion only and may be totally false but... May be there was some odd outside air conditions in addition to an uneven air distribution inside the canopy (especially after distorting it so much by the front riser input)? At the speed of the dive the air flowing over the top and bottom skins could couse the flatter of the non-rigid wing. It IS just a piece of fabric after all and not having full pressurization will cause it to behave strangely especially at higher speeds. Edited to add - ask them to perform a few harness turns, see if it happens again - that may help prove or disprove my theory - as the canopy distortion is minimal with harnes input. 7. Neptune is a great tool, I'd recommend it to anyone for any type of jump. I found it to be tremendous help with my set ups. It is accurate and reliable. It also has all the functions of the ProTrack (which i also use and love) and more. Alti's Customer Service has been pretty good with replacing my early model that had a few issues with a new unit. The issue was buttons were getting very hard to press, until one stopped working completely. There are new visual altimiters coming out by L&B, so check them out too, do some research. Any ealry model may have flaws, but these will be fixed or the unit will be replaced at no cost. Look at the maker's reputation like L&B are GREAT when it comes to customer support. Cant say enough good stuff about their commitment to us. SoFPiDaRF - School of Fast Progress in Downsizing and Radical Flying. Because nobody knows your skills better than you.
  8. Cool, thanks for the reference! Must be different editions - in my book it's actually Chapter 6(!) - page 90... I think the folks above answered it - if you are faced with different conditions (i.e. - wind change) you alter the intitiation point ONLY, not the initiation altitude - just look at figure 34 on that page (or next, depending on your book). But initiation altitude WILL be different for 90 vs 270 :) SoFPiDaRF - School of Fast Progress in Downsizing and Radical Flying. Because nobody knows your skills better than you.
  9. may be i have a different print version?... NOWHERE on page 74 can i find that. Could you clarify by giving the chapter/paragraph reference? (in my book page 74=Chapter 5 "Landnings"/paragraph "The perfect stop") SoFPiDaRF - School of Fast Progress in Downsizing and Radical Flying. Because nobody knows your skills better than you.
  10. LOL thats a funny story! Thanks for that May be a touch of that "Hack it or pack it" attitude should come back? Too many people now think that they are somehow special and expect that everyone must smile for them. Oh and dont you dare tell them that they suck, or even suggest that they are wrong. LOL They are usually the 2-3 year temporary skydiver types SoFPiDaRF - School of Fast Progress in Downsizing and Radical Flying. Because nobody knows your skills better than you.
  11. May be he had something on his mind... May be he didnt hear you... May be he was just tired. Whatever it was, please tell me, oh sensitve new jumper, why should ANYONE, let alone someone who HAS seen it all, pay attention to every single person on the DZ? If you expect an accomplished skydiver to pay you respects now, when you have 18 jumps, I want to see how your attitude changes when you get a few thousand jumps and see hundreds of new jumpers come and go. IF you get there of course. SoFPiDaRF - School of Fast Progress in Downsizing and Radical Flying. Because nobody knows your skills better than you.
  12. Let me see if this will be of any help to you wondering minds: Any physical body travelling through the air has drag accociated with that motion. Drag is defined as the force that opposes forward motion. Drag must be overcome by thrust in order to achieve forward motion. (of course OUR way to get thrust is the force of gravity) There are several types of drag in aerodynamics: form, pressure, skin friction, parasite, induced, and wave. We as skydivers should probably worry about only two of them. The drag i was referring to in my previous post is called FORM drag. The skin friction and from drag combined is what's called PARASITE drag. There is established formula to calculate the parasite drag. It is: Dp = CDp x S x S r V(square) Where: Dp = Parasite Drag CDp= Coefficient of Parasite Drag S = Wing area r = Air density V = Velocity From here you can see that it would be pretty easy to substitute the equation variables with real life values. You may have a hard time measuring some of them, but it can be done. My brain is fried... can anyone do the math? :) I think the Dp of a 220 sq ft canopy will be higher then Dp of a 120 sq ft canopy. Edited to add links (although they may not be very interesting): http://142.26.194.131/aerodynamics1/Drag/Page4.html and for those that want to get really technical about this calculation and scaling of a wing up and down http://142.26.194.131/aerodynamics1/Drag/Page3.html#Reynolds%20Number SoFPiDaRF - School of Fast Progress in Downsizing and Radical Flying. 13. No. I am not convinced. SoFPiDaRF - School of Fast Progress in Downsizing and Radical Flying. Because nobody knows your skills better than you.
  14. Since you aren't wrong then you must have the experience to speak with authority. Do you have a degree in aerospace engineering or aeronautics? Do you design anything with wings as a hobby or as a job? If yes, then you can answer your own questions (and educate us in the process). If not, then this can lead into more hypothetical grounds then actual facts. I am saying that the size of cells on a conventional 200+ sq ft 9-cell will create so much drag that even with the correct loading or rather most efficent for the task at hand (speed and distance of a swoop, i am guessing) it will slow down and stop way before a smaller wing loaded the same. I would guess that if they create a 230 sq ft thin profile wing similar to a VX or Velo loaded at 2.2-2.4 it will go the distance, but i am convinced that 230 sq ft Crossfire will not outperform a 130 X-fire loaded the same. In the end, i think unless you can answer your own questions and prove what i said above was wrong, I think i will stick with my opinion. 15. if you want to learn, I'd highly recomment you read The Parachute and its Pilot by Brian Germain to learn from someone with undisputed knowledge of the subject. http://www.bigairsportz.com/publishing.php But to quickly answer why big wing loaded same as small wing will not be more efficent ... Basically it comes down to finding that sweet spot where the drag/lift ratio is kept at its optimal point. If you load it too much - you lose lift. If you get too big of a wing you get too much drag... "111's are more efficient than Luigi's 39" not because they are bigger... he is loading that 39 at... well, i dont know exactly, probably 4 to 1? That is just NOT an efficent wing loading for that type of a canopy. SoFPiDaRF - School of Fast Progress in Downsizing and Radical Flying. Because nobody knows your skills better than you.
  16. LOL I guess you WERE serious. You're wrong dude. Talk to people that know around your dropzone to find out why or ask here. SoFPiDaRF - School of Fast Progress in Downsizing and Radical Flying. Because nobody knows your skills better than you.
  17. Why? Why would you want to do that? Just curious about your motivation. SoFPiDaRF - School of Fast Progress in Downsizing and Radical Flying. Because nobody knows your skills better than you.

  21. What a R-E-T-A-R-D! I was laughing my ass off - especially when he was explaining this whole thing. 22. not sure if we're talking about the same thing here, but didnt PD displayed a 143R made from some new hi-tech fabric at the last riggers convention that packed as big as regular 113R? Is it the same fabric? cant wait for that! SoFPiDaRF - School of Fast Progress in Downsizing and Radical Flying. Because nobody knows your skills better than you.
  23. congrats - must have been a great trip! You should post it on the regular forum too, not just in photo and video SoFPiDaRF - School of Fast Progress in Downsizing and Radical Flying. Because nobody knows your skills better than you.
