Tandem pilots, What is your favorite Tandem Rig?
cobaltdan replied to bclark's topic in Gear and Rigging
http://www.extremefly.com/aerodynamics/canopies/tandem.html tandem canopy information, reviews and videos (1002 pounds exit weight, 184mph deployment, zero wind landing !!!!!!) sincerely, dan atair www.extremefly.com -
i do not believe there has been any record set here. gps datalogging is simple and accesable to ayone capable of performing this stunt and would provide exact proof of any feat. its pretty obvious that no meaningfull record of any kind was set, but then this was not about setting a record but simply about publicity. in that sense i would think a great success as images of redbull on the wing were picked up by news papers and tv around the world. sincerely, dan www.extremefly.com Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

jumping without lines stows will not make for a hard opening (all except locking stows). having your canopy catch air out of the bag before you are at line stretch will make for a hard opening. sincerely, dan www.extremefly.com Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

a few rules of thumb that will vary depending on the design and situation: to modify the slider on a canopy for a slower opening you want to reduce the span dimension of the slider, but not necessarily the drag. reducing the span restricts the canopy more in its up position. but you still need the surface area to provide required drag. doming is one solution slightly increasing the cord dimension is another. ther are many variables at play and no hard and fast advice i can give for all situations. sincerely, dan atair www.extremefly.com Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

Help me (hopefully) prove someone wrong
cobaltdan replied to BBKid's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
the spectra and stilletto use identical airfoils, only difference is the planform. 7 cell planforms are typically non elliptical and definately lower aspect ratio than 9 cell canopies. bottom line they are just less efficient. but you can definately swoop a loaded 7cell. sincerely, dan www.extremefly.com Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military) -
i have tested gelvenor zp fabric on canopies with almost 3000 jumps. the fabric is still significantly lower perosity than substantially new f111. btw for those that do not know, you can measuire porisoty with a porosity meter. basically it is a vertical bellows, you place the fabric to be tested over the mouth of the bellows at the top (about a 3" diameter) and trip the device the bellowas are sealed on the bottom with a weight. the setup uses gravity to suck air through the fabric. as air leaks into the bellows they expand and hang lower. a digital timmer records the time it takes for the bellows to move from the up position to the bottom position. sincerely, dan atair www.extremefly.com Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

Who has actually flown a highly loaded reserve?
cobaltdan replied to gus's topic in Safety and Training
i fly an atair 110 resreve, and i have rides on other small reserves i.e. pd 113, tempo 120 and a steller 120. my exit weight is almost 200#. absloutely no issues loading the atair or pd reserve that high, flies great and plenty of flare. the tempo and steller i found far less suitable, very poor flare and more sensitive stall. best advice: demo the reserve (in your main tray) before you buy. sincerely, dan atair www.extremefly.com Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military) -
i think there is a chance we have a cc170 in stock. (i keep making canopies for demo's, and the office keeps selling them before i get the chance to put risers on). Sincerely, Dan office # 718-923-1709 Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

similar but not identical...its all in the details... sincerely, dan Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

control range is as all our canopies relativly deep. very stable, even at 3#/' loading. very deep stall point on both toggles and rear risers. flare is huge and canopy can be completely shut down even at 3# loading. I am finishing a nose pattern now and it is definatly final. Sincerely, Dan Atair Aerodynamics www.extremefly.com Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

first have your canopy checked for proper line trim. if that checks out, look at your flying. i.e. dont ride your brakes, understand the sources of turbulence and fly a safe distance from them. learn to recognize and avoid dangerous wind conditions. understand that a new pilot under a large lightly loaded canopy should not fly in the same conditins that some more experienced pilots under higher wingloadeings may consider. be safe. dan Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

unlike the closed nose of some paragliders canopies (they are reinforced by stiff mylar) there should be no reduction in inlet drag with the rage design over the same canopy with a fully open nose. basically due to the bottom skin scoop and the fact that the closed portion can not follow the airfoil contour. additionally the closed portion is not in a fashion to brace the nose for reducing spanwise distortion (see the images, non loaded rib higher than loaded). the slower speed of the 85 x brace vs the 107 rage simply means the 85 is generating much more lift than your 107. but hey it looks cool... sincerely, dan Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

the canopy is unreal. We adjusted the production design for higher speed and on the first jump eric hit a 400' swoop. look out ! sincerely, dan preston atair aerodynamics Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

eric should be on the production version of the onyx tomorrow cloudy skies permiting at the ranch in ny. btw he is 280 # exit weight on the 95. I should be out there jumping it as well... we have made and flown a few "bi plane" canopies, just for sh^ts and giggles. Generally aerodynamically speaking the wings have to be seperated by at least 1 times the cord length. sincerely, dan atair aerosynamics Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

the viper is a kick ass canopy. I know as we made it. It was privately labeled for a distributor that is no longer around but rest assured the manufacturer definately is. Th viper is the predecessor to the cobalt canopy and we still fully support them with repairs and line sets. sincerely, dan Atair Aerodynamics www.extremefly.com 718-923-1709 Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

your profile states 230 jumps on a lightly loaded canopy. there is no point to considering a velocity, you are not ready to jump that canopy in the wingload range it shines at. as far as a stilletto you could probably get away with jumping one at the same wingloading you are on now, but i would not recommend it. there are more forgiving ellipticals to learn on, especially as your experience is jumping a 7 cell. if you are set on not waiting and transitioning to an elliptical now, go with the advice of your local instructors, and look at canopies such as the cobalt, safire2 and sabre 2. these are forgiving ellipticals ideal for transition from a square. keep the wingload similar to what you are flying now and follow the canopy manufacturers recommendations. sincerely, dan atair aerodynamics Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

jari put me on a skyflier for my first wingsuit jump (btw same jump i puut him on a prototype comp cobalt)...anyway i love the skyflier but the stress level in learning it and still flying is greater than the gti which i later tried. as an all around fun suit in retrospect i should have bought the gti. the skyflier has more wing surface area and due to the structure of a human body where you can support the wing area and where it aerodynamically should be due to your center of gravity are mismatched. i find my best fligt under a skyflier is when you are just short of loosing control. so i guess in short for your first suit if you want to aspire to the longest slowest flights and are ok with a higher stress factor get the flier. if you want to flock with other jumpers (skyfliers included) and just have fun with a lower stess factor get the gti. just my opinion... sincerely, dan preston atair aerodynamics www.extremefly.com Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

The planform of a batwing is a glaring example of everthing taught not to do, if you want an efficient stable wing. But hey it looks cool. (btw i do have a bunch of lumps on a 116, nothing nice to say beyond: it flies....?) Sincerely, Dan Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

no, the canopy was not landed. i gave strict instructions not to try. the guys thought it was quite possible and i agree but i would want it jumped with our datalogger first to determine the degree of difficulty. sincerely, dan atair aerodynamics www.extremefly.com Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)
