>My first jump with the S3, by the time I got to 5000 ft, I was literally worried whether I'd have enough strength to get a good toss on my PC. dude, you seriously need to start working out !!!!!!!!!!!!! Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

ok i received the sample of technora line with the edges terminated using the jump shack method from nicknitro. it was placed into our galdabini universal test machine. result the 352 pound rated line broke at 315.15 pounds immediately above the inside tail of the finger trap. it did not break at the knot. i relayed the data to nick and he will be sending a dozen more samples to test (cant draw too many conclusion s from a single test). i am a little concerned that the line should have surpassed 352 pounds... sincerely, Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

yes, that is the correct address. if possible ups/fedex is best as we are on a pier in an industrial complex. mail is typically quite slow to us. sincerely, Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

no i did not, samples were tested with a square knot. if you want to send me samples of the jump shack no-sewing method, i would be glad to test them and post the graphs. 12" long with eyes at both ends. eyes should be able to pass a .75" rod through. sincerely, Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

i just did a quick test with technora lines from el woods (nice stuff btw). i broke 3 pieces on our universal test machine with a knot in the center. all three broke on the knot...? sincerely, Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

there have been minor changes over the years and some customer requested variances produced, e.g. some of the privately labeled canopies for gunter/winchester/skydepot. however the basic planform, airfoil and trim are almost identical. we are speaking of small tweaks and our recommended line specs now are that which are used on the cobalt. i will be glad to fax/email anyone complete line specs from any revision past or present. sincerely, daniel preston www.atairaerodynamics.com (sport) www.atairaerospace.com (military) Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

i think practicing landing without use of toggles is quite useful. i have landed small cobalts and onyx's manytimes without use of toggles (unstowed), mainly in practice for swooping by on several occasions due to mals. the last time was not practice. i was jumping with a good friend who experienced a double mal: cypress fire resulting in a main/reserve entaglement with neither inflating. i spiralled down as hard as i could under an onyx 85. i was extremely upset watching what i though was my friend's death (he is ok, now). i came in super fast into an all too small clearing in the woods, i was screaming to my friend and in my state lost a toggle while in the corner. practice pays off, and i dropped the other toggle and landed on rears, crosswind between trees....dropped my gear and ran to attend my friend. there are many instances where i would choose not to chop my main and land without toggles, e.g. line over, broken steering line, etc... although not sure i would choose to land a highly loaded elliptical with stowed brakes, or one stowed brake. if i had one toggle jammed stowed, and wanted/needed to land it i would probably choose to cut the steering line first. dan www.extremefly.com Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

you may want to check out the hmd for palmtops from icuiti: http://icuiti.com/work.html we have used these in freefall. -dan Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

this system does not flare to land. it autonomously guides to a point just overhead of the target (offset based on winds) and then deploys a round and decends for several seconds unguided until touchdown on target. the glide ratio is a little over 4.5:1 it is of course effected by uppers but has quite a high vector velocity, so it is effected far less than a lightly loaded canopy. in use it is most often dropped from an upwind position and can cover quite a bit of ground given its glide ratio and a tail wind push. -dan Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

2200 pounds under a Cobalt 350 attached is a picture of our autonomous guided parachute system. basically it is a smart bomb only for safely delivering cargo. the system can be deployed at 35k, fly fully autonomously 30+ miles and land on target accurate to better than 150 feet. i was asked to post a photo, so here it is: sincerely, daniel preston www.atairaerospace.com Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

several years ago i received a demo, which i wasted no time jumping from a balloon.... if you could steer the thing i might have considered landing it. dan www.extremefly.com Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

you want a wonderwoman chute, hehe our composite canopies are translucent, you can sort of see clouds through then when you look up... for fun we did build a canopy once out of clear mylar and adhesive tape. we flew it twice (landed it once) let me tell you it is very, very freaky to be flying a clear canopy. -dan Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

Does anyone have GPS experience?
cobaltdan replied to YISkyDive's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
we use gps extensively for canopy analysis. however for turning and swoop analysis we found gps alone to be lacking. we now use a system that integrates gps with barometric, + inertial (triaxial accelerometers, magnetometers and gyros). our software replays the data like a movie superimposing a moving canopy on a 3d gps plot correwctly orientated in roll, pitch and yaw. also while displayinng detailed raw and calculated analog data. down side is it is a very expensive system. on the inexpensive side the software compegps that roq mentioned is very good. sincerely, daniel preston www.atairaerospace.com Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military) -
eric butts was ranked 8th overal after a year of competition flying a cobalt 120 against a field of i think about 160 x braced. 9 cell canopies can be competitive. but remember everyone is skilled in these events, to win though you must be consistant. -dan Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

hello shyandinnocent, you have no name listed, however i brought your post to the attention of gina bernardo in our office and she has no record of any complaints on a c 95, nor any line sets sold to your area in the past year? i dont know who you have tried to contact but you can reach Atair direct at: Atair Aerodynamics 160 Coffey Street. the dhu and software is about $10k inertial or load link sensors are additional. the units btw, are being used by: us army, darpa, nasa, various parachute and uav companies, several foriegn militaries and special forces. Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

i didnt read the entire thread so i appologize if any of this is redundant. we have developed a "dead man" cutaway system for jumping sub-40 sq' canopies. steve curtis in elloy also has a promising design. contact for more details. sincerely, dan www.atairaerospace.com www.atairaerodynamics.com Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

the dhu fits in the palm of your hand. and is slightly wider than a hand held gps. the case is billet machined aluminum and is pretty much bullet proof. we also manufacture a vest which holds the dhu and various sensors for performing datalogging on personnel canopies and harness/containers. as far as true air speed, a variety of sensors can be used and data logged by our dhu. sincerely, dan Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)

the papers you are referring are a study of leading edge turbercules and their effect on humpback whale flippers. it has nothing to do with trailing edge scallops.... anyway...they look cool and you know its all about fashion.. danl atair Daniel Preston atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)
