I tried. Unfortunatly I was in a spin, my hookknife dropped to the ground, and I couldn't grab my other hook knife I had since i was wrapped up. I'm sorry to hear about your friend's cousin. Deepest sympathy goes out to you guys. And telling people what they always think... Ya in theory that's a good idea. As others have already stated, you never know how they will react. I can remember about 1 year before my dad was diagnosed with a brain tumor, he told me all this stuff. I wondered what had gotten into him and even was curious (although I didn't say it to him, i don't think) if he was on drugs or something, because it was way out of context for him to act the way he did. To this day, I still wonder if he just knew he was dying and wanted to make sure that I knew what he thought. It's sometimes hard (most of the time for me) to express what you feel and how others are going to react. You're absolutly right that you don't want to leave on bad terms. You never know... I like playing around clouds, but not through them. It's fun to be under canopy, and get the thermals. But going through them.... not the smartest thing in the world. I know I had 1 jump which was probably one of the scariest of being in the middle of layers of clouds, and we didn't come out of the clouds until about 1800 feet. I won't go through thick clouds anymore. That was really bad. Although I just love water. I must say I fell in love with the ocean when I was in college on my research cruise. There's just something about the fresh salty smell the ocean has... Well, if i know the area or not, i keep some things in my day backpack no matter what. I have my compass, whistle, always bring a pocketknife, sometimes i remember to pack my insect repellant (sometimes I don't). I always have some first aid supplies to get me through scenerios (i'm an EMT, and am trained in wilderness first aid, so that helps too). The first aid stuff i carry... bacterial ointment, gauze pads, tape, ace bandages, sam splint (on longer day hikes/backpacking trips only usually), my CPR mask (that's come in handy too), water, granola bar of some sort, waterproof matches (or lighter), and a minimag or headlamp. I think that covers it. Depending on the hike, I sometimes change my gear, but usually that's about it. sometimes on longer day hikes i'll carry iodine tablets or my water purified depending on the hike. Oh ya, also pen and paper in case a situation occurs, and you need to monitor someone and take vitals while waiting for help. There was one time where I was on a short day hike (approximately 3 to 4 hour trip), and as we were hiking these kids just went running up this waterfall not having proper gear or anything. All of a sudden, one guy fell about 50 feet to about 40 feet from where i was standing. It was like something out of a movie, in slow motion and everything. I had my 'first aid' stuff on hand. We were only a few miles from the road, so we managed to get help and get an ambulance to the scene. Luckily the guy ended up being alright. He broke his back, and eventually healed. He was lucky, especially since his friends wanted to carry him out of the woods. I wouldn't allow for that to happen. Scary stuff though, but it's good to take precautions on first aid stuff. Yes, yes it does suck! Especially when you have too much on your mind and you just can't. I'll try to read, but if it's a real interesting book, research journal it's tough. Usually, I'll just try to be energetic, and hope eventually that I'll burn up enough energy to fall asleep. If something is bothering me, I usually write down what I'm feeling and whatnot. That helps to. The important thing is though, the next day NOT to take a nap when you're tired, and force yourself to stay up until a 'normal' hour, then go to sleep. Major vibes to you. Things will get better over time. You will go through a heartbroken time for now, but it will get better. It's better to have loved once than not at all.
