It's basic triage. Concentrate the limited resources where most critical at first. Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh.

Why yes! If the price is right. 6 pack of 20oz cokes? Nah. He wants jello shots... Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh.

It's the hard task of convincing people that those "cheap" tomatoes they get are actually costing them $6 a pound once everything is factored in. Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh.

The true costs are hidden. That's why we have the issue. It's a combo of short term thinking and the fundamental flaw of accounting's inability to track indirect costs. Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh.

Except for the fact that one method of control used is trying to keep the people uneducated so they can't choose for themselves. Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh.

Did he push it too far in his follow up statements and questions? Yes. Was the original question valid? Yes. Was any of the discussion race based? No. At most it involves cultural differences and misunderstandings by both. The senator tried to make it too personal rather than just invalidating the legitimacy of the man's statements. And the second one is largely because of the first one. Not to mention the fact that it's in another country, and is not directly endangering the US. Or it could be because of PC pressure, the actual criteria (as well as a profile) is not stated. Fine. And if a legal immigrant still wishes to speak in their native language and use an interpreter after 20+ years on the topic of immigration in a government meeting, that can be questioned as well as severely compromise their argument.

But since you're not actually fighting against a nation, the fighting doesn't stop when you've defeated what's first put in front of you. Take Iraq, we went in hard with shock and awe, did what needed to be done, quickly, by defeating Saddam's forces and taking control of the country within a month - and when did the fighting stop there, exactly? Exactly my point. We made the same mistakes in Iraq once we defeated Saddam. Failure to aggressively eliminate the other threats and those that harbored them. I think the press is more of the issue, just as it's been since Vietnam. The real reason we haven't "won" yet is two fold: * No clear criteria for winning. * Attempting to fight a PC war. We're attempting to minimize colateral damage and civilian loss of life which they are using against us. It doesn't help when someone who was likely used as a human sheild is accidently killed and the press is right there to take pictures of it. My stance on it is whether one feels why we're there is justified or not, we should just do what needs to be done. Go in hard, go in big, and accept there will be colateral damage and civilian casulties but the quicker the fighting stops, the less it will likely actually be, Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh.

Except there is also no requirement for anyone to be "immersed" in English. This is actually more true today than it ever has been considering the wide distribution and availability of Spanish language news and entertainment on satellite, cable and the internet. Who said anything about requirements? My whole point has been over how he did not help his cause. If one chooses to not learn the language used in political proceedings, that's their right, but as seen here, it can come back to bite them. FWIW, I think the line was crossed when the senator said not speaking English was insulting. True. But can you also not see this as an example of our current tolerance being abused the other way? No, because at no point has it been established how well the person could express himself in English. Obviously he didn't feel he could speak it well enough to use his English to testify. Nor would anyone expect you to if you were there just visiting or had only lived there a couple years. But 23? One would actively have to refuse to learn a language fluently if immeresed in it for that long. Should there then be a requirement that a person has to reach a certain level of proficiency before they have rights or the ability to testify? What should that level be? Should they have to score a 800s on the English portions of the SAT or will the skills of a two-year-old suffice? Should there be provisions to allow everyone to speak? Sure but at the same time they shouldn't be abused. The issue is not that he was uncomfortable speaking English and speaking Spanish it's that he was doing it 23 years after coming to this country. Had this man simply left his time in country unmentioned unless asked, his testimony would have likely held more value. Of course now it's a publicity/controversy rod. Not really. There is no legal requirement to speak English in the US. It might score him some points in certain sectors, but overall it was an inappropriate question to begin with. It's not a legal requirement, but if you're speaking on the topic of immigration, you're basically weakening your own argument. It's sorta like (but far less extreme) a clansmen or a skinhead speaking on the topic of affirmative action. City: Keep parked pickup trucks out of sight overnight
Bolas replied to JohnRich's topic in Speakers Corner
Not from my limited experience. Almost bought a house in a subdivision on a pond. Started asking about parking an RV and was told a story of a guy in the neighborhood that drove a rig and got in trouble with the HOA even though he parked just the truck, not the trailer, in his own driveway. He ended up having to park it at a storage place. F that. I'm in a neighborhood with no HOA. I could walk around my front yard naked and the only thing my neigbors could legally do is call the cops. -
+1. It's not so much what he did, but how badly and stupidly he tried to deny it. Stupidity if left untreated is self-correcting If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh.

It's all relative. A more accurate term might be "less evil." Yo Turtle. We were talking about you at The Farm this past weekend.

Cutting off all ties with a family member v. have you done it?

Great thought, but in my experience it didn't work. Had 2 friends that when they graduated college I told them "My gift to you is skydiving, you set it up and I'll pay for it." This was before I started skydivng and before tandems became as popular but neither ever took me up on it. If she's in good shape, still doesn't hurt to try.

WTF is THAT? 2005 Chevy SSR. It's basically a Corvette with a hardtop convertible truck body.
