Yes. They were forced at gunpoint to accept these mortgages byt these evil banks. Their children held hostage until they signed. When I started looking for a house 4-5 years ago they want to preapprove me for $300-$400k. I told them no, cuz I wanted to be able to eat. They tried to convince me to get an ARM too saying having equity in the house was "wasting" it. I did my homework and did not just believe what the salesperson told me. Everyone got the high credit ARM push. That includes inner city minorities. If they are victims of anything, it's their own greed or not looking for other options. I don't have a problem with this. If my money is being given to companies to prop them up they should have to adhere to the above or more. Healthcare is like insurance, no one cares about it until they need it. If they don't have it, they can easily be wiped out by one illness or incident. Hospitals and ER's are innundated with people seeking "free" treatment for the sniffles, etc. Hence the charges proposed for non emergency services. Education - "No child left behind" operating on the flawed idea that everyone is equal. I'll admit the problems are largely lack of parental involvement except when you want to hold the kid back and they threaten to sue. Not everyone needs to go to college yet the whole system is setup for just that. More trade and manual labor skills need to be offered to those that may be great with their hands, but may not be able to master high level calculus. I'll focus on the US. We need to get out of the business of governing morality and realize that people are going to do what they are going to do. Education not regulation. Legalize drugs and prostitution and tax it Use those currently enforcing the drug and prostitution laws to enforce the new tax laws regulating it. Legalize gambling nationwide and setup a federal lottery. Establish strict new guidelines for any person or business that requests government assistance. Don't make it easy on them. The goal will be to get them off assistance and back to contributors to society. Run government services like businesses. Switch to a pay per use tax basis vs. using income tax. Use those taxes to fund that service. and any expansions etc. Income tax will be change to a flat tax system. The IRS agents and accountants would be used for all the service based fee systems. I think we all can agree that there are huge problems in the US in pretty much every sector: Education, Health Care, The Economy, etc. Other countries and even the rest of the world are in a similar situation. We all tend to sit in here and say what is being proposed won't work but how many of us think we actually have the solution? Pretend you're president, prime minister, etc. What would you change to fix things? Where would you start and what would you focus on? This is not intended to be a thread where one person's ideas are debated, more of a thread where multiple peoples ideas are collected. If there is an idea that you want to debate, it may be best to create a separate thread for it. If this was the case, do you think people would take more responsibility about their own safety? Would people be calling 911 if someone messed up their cheeseburger? I could see the cost of something like this being paid for by a homeowners insurance policy or something similar. Again, this is something that'd probably end up being covered in an insurance policy. What happens if you need an ambulance in the current system? If these services were covered by an insurance policy, so be it. One could choose a policy if they wanted to that didn't. Even if it was covered, a call to 911 would most likely be a claim, so that would cut down on them.

I realize that you are probably not serious, but I totally agree with you. Local services should be supported by user fees. Some level of property tax levy for fire service might be acceptable, but expecting people who call 911 in a non-emergency situation ought to be billed. I know that I've personally paid for a rescue from SAR after a 911 call, and I carry insurance that covers me for that, in case it happens again. Why on earth should I expect you to pay for my transport after a BASE jumping accident? And there is a primary reason why "bundled" services is a bad idea: Abuse of "free" services. Communism is a bad idea because there's no incentive or rewards for success. Totally disagree. A true free market economy with 0 government intervention or regulation would sort itself out. People would vote with their wallets. Once you do have gov't involvement, it all changes. Government likes big companies because it's less for them to keep track of. So they give them breaks, special funding etc. which they use to grow larger. Theses "Titan" that have been allowed to get to the size where letting them collapse under their own incompetence and stupidity will destabilize the economy and they know this. So what do they do? They make even more risky and stupid short term decisions to maximize profits today knowing that when the shit hits the fan tomorrow because of it they just ask Uncle Sam for more $$$. In a way it's sorta a form of reverse communism as there is no real penalty or loss from bad decisions. But even if one DZ tries to steal customers and business from another local DZ, it's not quite the same thing.
