I hope Santa is good to you and if he isn't, I can still arrange that horse-drawn buggy ride through Atlanta. Uhh, that is, if Wildblue doesn't mind...lol. RC, I tore up the Polar Bear in a high speed crash so I've been out of sorts for a while. I'm back, tho, and ready to rock. FFF "Upon seeing the shadow of a pigeon, one must resist the urge to look up." -

PT, I was not paying too much attention to details when I posted my reply to shark. I think he was playing with my head a little...lol, cause a missle does not "bolter". What you saw in Vikings attachment would be called an "incident". A bolter is a bird that misses all 4 wires. Boy, that'll teach me to read a little more carefully. Viking, I now have some of the newspaper articles loaded and they are on the way via e-mail. I didn't want to bore anyone here by posting them in this forum. TripleF "If you have something vital and it's sincere, you can communicate." Butch Trucks -

Pt, Yeah, a bolter is when the bird misses all 4 wires. The missle apparently unloaded from the shock of the landing. You have to understand that on touchdown on a carrier is a little different than landing one on a runway. The impact is much greater, the stop is awesome and the g-forces are astronomical. If anything is not installed properly, hell, sometimes even when everything is done right, Mr Murphy steps in and things go to hell. Shark, Yeah, McCain was on the "O" boat. And yeah, he "started" the Forrestal fire, altho accidentally. He was sitting in his A-4 when a Zuni misfired from another bird that was sitting across the flight deck. It hit his belly tank and he bailed. He came on board after the Oriskany's and Forrestal's fire and was shot down while dropping ordinance over Hanoi. We never saw him after that, but yes, it was a sortie from the Oriskany he was flying when he got hit. No, it isn't the first time I've seen a bolter, but it is the first time I've seen an AIM bolter. The AIM wasn't in use when I was in. That pic didn't look like it was a misfire but more like a bolter. Since the Oriskany fire, I've been under the impression that no bird, under any circumstances, was to recover with live ordinance. Am I wrong in this? I've carried that belief for 30 years. BTW,I couldn't tell whether that was a 2 or a 3 wire trap. TripleF "If you have something vital and it's sincere, you can communicate." Viking, I got a distinct feeling that we are gonna' get drunk at some point in time...lol. Here is another shot, taken from one of the ships that was on the scene at the time of the fire. Pardon the smallness of the pic. It was taken from a long way away. TripleF "If you have something vital and it's sincere, you can communicate." Butch Trucks -

skymedic, What's his name? There were about 5000 people, counting our airwing, there. So I may, and then I may not...but it never hurts to ask...and it may reunite a couple of shipmates. TripleF "If you have something vital and it's sincere, you can communicate." Butch Trucks -

Viking, No, that is a 1000 lb bomb..and I witnessed and have newspapers to this day, describing 19 year old sailors singlehandedly rolling 500 and 1000 lb bombs, Zuni rockets, Sidewinder missiles, and melted A-4 Skyhawks and UH-1 choppers over the side. I was in the middle of the blood, the tears, the screams of the wounded and the silence of the dead. I lost 44 good people from 7:15 a.m that morning to 3:20 p.m. that afternoon. I've been to the Wall in D.C. and traced the names of the dead. In spite of the fact that there are cameras on the flight deck, and there are, no US warbird is allowed to land, with live ordinance, on the moving deck of a Carrier at sea. Want more? I can send you copies of the original newspaper clippings from the front page of the Atlanta Journal/Constitution that tells the story. 44 brave MEN died that day, protecting the right of every American Citizen to vocalize their opinions, such as the some of the "brave souls" in BillVon's thread about fear and the War on Terrorism. These were people I lived with, sleep beside, shared food with, and worked with every day for more days than I want to remember. Unfortunately, I can't forget. Sometimes I close my eyes at night and see the faces of these warriors. And I will not participate in a thread that denegrates the memory of these men.
