Hi all, I am posting this on behalf of my friend Mark: Calling all Swoopers!!! Its that time of year when the pond out at Bay Area Skydiving (Byron) is full of water and just begging to be swooped. I thought its about time to organize a Pond Swooping contest to see who in NorCal is the best. On Saturday March 4th, I will be out at Byron shooting hi-definition video of all the attempts. That evening in the hanger we will show the good, the bad, and the ugly and then judge the days winner. This is an unofficial swoop contest and the rules are simple -- be the best and win! I have created two categories, Best Swoop & Best Trick. The winner in each category will win $100 cash plus a medal and bragging rights. There is no limit to the number of attempts. You can win with one great swoop or several. We are also planning on having a party that night in the hanger that will coincide with the video judging. Please let me know if you think you will be participating in the contest so we can be prepared and have enough beer. This contest is open to all levels of swoopers. Please feel free to forward this invite to whoever you think will be interested. Looking forward to seeing some real NorCal talent, Best regards, Mark Lichtle Aerial Extreme LLC www.AerialExtreme.com

Seriously.. the only thing you can do at that point is protect it as good as possible.. I see a lot of people being quite reckless with their helmet in the plane, bumping into others, or having others bump into them.. that is one thing you can not afford with an unprotected lens.. It's one reason you see me all frantic trying to protect the lenses on my cameras.. I have to say.. I have one crash with my 15mm, where I full on face planted it in the dirt in Arizona.. and there's not a scratch on it.. it's a very well built lens, with amazing glass. I have close to 1000 jumps on mine and it's still holding up great.. Iwan

My advice is to read up on what the mm thing and the F1.8 thing is it will help you bigtime once you start using the camera.. Taking photos is a bit different from doing video.. with video you just slap the camera on your head and go for it.. for photos, you're going to have to get yourself somewhat familiar with how cameras work, and what the different settings mean, even if you're not gonna do it like a pro.. just my 2 cts buddy.. let me know if you have any questions.. the mm thing.. that is the focal length of your lens.. what is focal length.. The F1.8 thing, that's the maximum aperture for the lens.. what is aperture Read up on these my friend, these were teh top hits on a Google search for these terms.. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions..

Well there is a little bit of truth to that one.. as they always say.. "It wouldn't have happened if he/she had a Wings.. " he he.. just make your pilot chute bulky enough.. and pack nice and stupid.. and any container will do the trick for ya..

The Stiletto is no longer the choice in swooping progression due to it's recovery arc. It is very short compared to many other choices out there.. Does that make the Stiletto a bad canopy? HELL NO! It is a really good canopy that is WAY fun to fly.. I love jumping them, but for swooping, I prefer the Sabre2

Stiletto vs Crossfire2 vs. Katana
vdschoor replied to nepalaw's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
If those are the only canopies you want to try, go with the Crossfire 139 / 129, don't go straight to the Katana. If you're at 1.6 on the 150, you'll be really close to 2.0 on the Katana 120 Have you tried any other types? I came from a Sabre2 150, demoed a Stiletto 150 and did about 100 jumps on a Stiletto 135 and finally decided on another Sabre2, this time a 135.. Try out as many different canopies as possible, and then make up your mind.. I'll preach for the Sabre2 135 over the Stiletto 135 when it comes to learning to swoop.. (The S2 has a longer recovery arc) Also the Crossfires are really good parachutes, but I havent flown one yet so I can't give you an opinion on those.. -
I agree 100%. But keep in mind that first you have to learn to see that in freefall, and sometimes that means knowing how to see things in 360 in your mind, while you are in one place. The next hurdle is having the flying skills to get there before the shot goes away. I'm not sure which is more challenging. In the time it takes to develop those skills, you've got time to fiddle with the thing on the ground. 100% correct there.. So the general recommendation to the original poster.. get lots of jumps in.. around 300 jumps, put the video camera on your head.. fly that for a couple hundred and then add the stills.. In the meantime.. learn as much about photography as possible.. I've been doing photography for almost 10 years, and didnt start using it in skydiving since 3 years ago..

Yeah, here the thing though, with the 20D being a small sensor camera, and news of Canon switching over to all full frame sensor cameras, buying a 20D now to jump with in a couple years seems a little short sighted. Even if he bought a camera a month before he wanted to jump it, that would give him four weekends at the DZ to play with, and who knos how much time at home. And really, we all know that for the fisrt 100 still camera jumps, he won't be 'framing' anything. It will be more a challenge just to remember to keep working the bite switch. I agree with Saskia and you.. although I have to say this. One of my friends had been a photographer for years before he applied it in skydiving, and his work was immediately way ahead of anyone who just "got a camera, played with it for a bit and strapped it on" Photography is not just about taking the picture, it's knowing what to look for and catching that in a photo...

Go with the Sigma 15mm lens, you will NOT be disappointed.. Check out the photos on my website (http://www.iwanvanderschoor.com) 99% of them are taken with the Sigma 15mm

No you won't - new weight classes - remember Hmm.. I guess I';ll just have to have a heavy lunch in between rounds
-
Hey Iwan, you can lighten up on your wingloading if you lose your monsterous camera helmet. Um That's without the helmet my friend.. I'll wear my helmet in the speed round to get myself closer to 2.0, since I dont own a weight vest..

It's not a 1+1 thing with processors.. the computer will do parallel computing, which means that there is two time 2.5Ghz available for computations... this is a SUPER simplified view of what dual processors do.. Say if your computer (single processor) has an application running that uses 90% of the processor.. now other applications you start only have the remaining 10% available to them.. In a dual processor machine, the program would only take up about 45% of the processors time (if the app is written correctly that is.. ) cause it will use some of the first and some of the second processor.. which means you still have 55% left for other applications.. Again this is a super simplified explanation.. So.. what you'll see with dual processors.. your applications will keep running at "top speed" longer before the machine starts slowing down.. Hope this makes sense.. If someone has a better explanation.. go ahead
