VIDEO: How to build a camera helmet in 10 minutes

Finally got this taken care of. Here is the alternate lo-res video, 34MB now. www.WingsuitPhotos.com -
Wow, you must be in a generous mood today... I thought for sure you'd support his idea that you're out of MY league! Not that you would have meant it, just can't believe you'd pass up a chance to give me shit. Maybe we're in the same league? Cowboy league? www.WingsuitPhotos.com

Not sure what that means. But, thanks? www.WingsuitPhotos.com

I managed, somehow. I think what attracted her to me was that, like her, I am not your typical dropzone dweller (nor your typical dropzone guy). We actually struck up a discussion in a bar about our college aerodynamics classes, and after a minute I looked around and all the other people with us had sort of said "woa" and backed off and given us our space. After that we drank a bunch of whiskey and put on cowboy hats. For real. Attached are two pictures. She liked it on top from the very beginning. Save a horse, ride a birdman? www.WingsuitPhotos.com

In order of importance: - Less exposed surface area than an FTP = less drag (this is very important for me since I fly wingsuits exclusively) - Better fit, more stable video platform - Lighter (in theory, though it did not actually work out this way, the next revision will) - More versatile - The satisfaction of doing it myself - It makes me feel cool www.WingsuitPhotos.com -

There is no such thing as a "factory made CCM"... but I spent almost as much as Wes charges... I detailed all my costs in THIS post from a few months ago. Yes, I know Mogwai very well. I actually almost used them in this video. Other good post rock bands are Sigur Ros, Godspeed You Black Emperor! and A Silver Mt Zion. The first song in the video is by "The Fucking Champs" as listed in the credits. I am not sure of the title (away from home right now) but it is either off of their "IV" or "V" album. www.WingsuitPhotos.com -
ACTUAL: Jump numbers before flying a Camera
The111 replied to bomb420's topic in Photography and Video
I had about 450 skydives and 200 wingsuit jumps. My first camera jump was in a wingsuit. I chased a cloud and landed off and sprained an ankle. www.WingsuitPhotos.com -

The liner is the same 7mm wetsuit hood I was wearing during the plaster wrap. Believe it or not the store bought camera helmets I've looked at ARE pretty flush with your head on top (as is mine). Often it looks like they're not, but this is mainly because of our misconceptions about the relative dimensions of the human head. Any artist (or anybody who's built a CCM) will be well aware of the fact that a person's eyeballs are pretty much halfway between the top of their head and the bottom of their chin.... right smack in the middle of the head. Next time you see a picture of somebody wearing a camera helmet and think the top plate is too high above their head (I've thought the same thing), see if their eyes are halfway between the top plate and their chin... if so the top plate is not as high as it appears. www.WingsuitPhotos.com -
1st LatinAmerican Wingsuit Boogie!!!!!! By Melon

With wingsuits getting bigger and bigger, these girls make a compelling argument for less surface area. Sometimes, less is more. www.WingsuitPhotos.com -

I think the helmet is a Bonehead Batrak, and it hasn't been manufactured in years. www.WingsuitPhotos.com -
Mike, watch either my 2.0 or 3.0 video on my website. Watch the breakoffs in slow-mo. Count how many paths you see with potential intersections. It never looks like the perfect "pie" that it is supposed to, there are always people with 5-10 degree offsets in their escape routes. Watching the breakoff video it often looks like people are headed right for each other, and probably the only reason they're not colliding in the video is vertical separation (hard to have that depth perception watching the video). www.WingsuitPhotos.com

Yeh, I'm gonna look for a plastic press-on cap. Every time I try to unthread the cap it unthreads the lens instead. www.WingsuitPhotos.com

I'm not sure if I want to do that, I'll PM you my reasons. Maybe I'll upload a smaller size to my site, a lower res version? www.WingsuitPhotos.com -
Yeh, I know the numbers don't always mean much. I wish I still had my Raynox .5 to compare, I wanted to do the same thing. If I remember correctly I had to have my XT lens at ~16mm to match the Raynox .5. With the Century .55 I need it at 17.5mm. So yeh, it's about 10% less wide, seems accurate as the numbers would lead you to believe. That's a pretty damn cool idea. Too bad with the 5050, the UV filter I had was causing vignetting... I guess maybe with a super slim one it would have been ok. www.WingsuitPhotos.com

Is that a typo? www.WingsuitPhotos.com

I made a post recently about fog problems a Raynox 5050 two-element lens on my HC5. So I just got a Century .55x single element 37mm lens. Got it from B&H for only $125. When it arrived I was AMAZED how freaking small it is. Smaller than a Royal lens by far. It's TINY. And supposedly HD too. All the other Century lenses were way more expensive, not sure why this one was so cheap. I don't have time to post any footage now, but I watched it on a large HDTV and it looked fine to me. Most importantly, NO FOG! Spot, do you know where to find out how many lines this glass is rated for? How does it compare to the Raynox 5050 I gave up? If Century can do this (HD in such a small form factor), why can't Royal? Wait a minute, it doesn't matter. Just get this lens... I for one am satisfied with it. Cheap, SMALL, and HD. I'm attaching a picture to show just how small it is. www.WingsuitPhotos.com

Well, even after getting a SECOND Raynox 5050 lens, I still had fog problems between the elements. Which sucks because I know someone else in the same area as me with this lens who does NOT have fog problems. Maybe because wingsuit jumps are longer, I have more time for condensation to occur? I doubt it, probably just bad lucky, or my friend got good luck with his lense. Either way I gave up on 2-element lenses and got a single element Century .55x I'll be making another post about. www.WingsuitPhotos.com

Oh ok, thanks. www.WingsuitPhotos.com

I must be missing something. How can you fit 37mm to "most if not all cameras" without a step-up ring? There are obviously lots of cameras with threads that aren't 37mm... or we wouldn't have all those various thread sizes in existence. Why is 37mm the magic number? www.WingsuitPhotos.com

Ha, I learned a lot about particle dust during this project. I actually did not have a lot of experience working with my hands before this... sanding, shaping, etc... certainly not laying up glass. Somehow I got lucky and the dust did not spread over my bedroom. But I grinded (heavy grinding) some carbon fiber in one isolated corner of my garage, and the dust spread ALL over the garage... any horizontal surface in the whole garage had a layer of black dust on it. I just recently finished cleaning most of it with a wet rag (that is the ONLY way to get rid of dust that fine, you cannot sweep it up). In the future ANY sanding of CF or fiberglass will be done outdoors. www.WingsuitPhotos.com
