The Swiss are smaller and more homogeneous. They feel connected to each other, with a common country to defend. America is vast, with large numbers of different types of people, many of whom feel disaffected from the nation. Another factor is that crime is concentrated mostly in large cities, and America has a whole lot of large cities compared to Switzerland. But if you take your average American rural small-town community, I think it would compare fairly well with the Swiss. Bwahahahahahaha... Yes. I do. I am a hunter. Big difference. So, killing defenseless animals with high-powered weapons, is morally defensible. But using a gun to save a human life is morally wrong. Is that it? Childishness. Animals mostly are not defenseless. You should know that. At second, not every shoot hits, you surely know that, too. At 3rd: Yep. No. No. No. This level of violence just b/c of a simple incident in daily lifetime makes me shudder. That's all. I never ever in my lifetime as a citizen, a driver, had the need to defend myself with anything while being on highway, while driving in the inner city. That's so far away from my imagination. I CANNOT control the behaviour of others. That is correct. But, it's so rare that f. e. in daily traffic we need to crack each others heads or have to pull out our guns just b/c of a simple little crash.... sorry. That's not my environment. It was a pleasure to read your post. Even I only made few jumps (and not thousands!), I'd like to tell a short story: I was one of those idiots in AFF: Trying so hard to follow instructions and failing several times, then injury at landing, which cost me about a year. After that, there was the day my new () instructor who asked me after 1st jump together: Could it be you do not really SEE the alti??? We checked on the ground. It was exactly like that. I never was mentally overloaded, I was half blind. And never noticed that. I arranged for the necessary w/in shortest time: Since then, I wear my glasses and am one happy jumper now! I was coming back to this AFF-I with my glasses sitting on the nose, doing AFF and following jumps within few holydays and beeing lucky that he never lost his faith in me. He simply was great, always convinced me that I can do it.. I will never forget his kindness and endless patience. Hats off to Felix. This had to be said.

maybe you should go back and actually READ the scenario again... the man w/ the gun PREVENTED the man w/ the club from doing harm to the man who accidentally hit his car... something the police could NOT have done, b/c they WEREN'T THERE. Of course, I read the complete thread. It's simple like that: A little crash, one person is taking his baseball club, the other one (if involved or not, a bystander ?) "replies" by showing his gun. Horror. It's not only the presentation of the gun, the violence itself already started (or could have started) with the club - next step the gun. Not normal in my opinion. I'm sorry. Weapons of every kind, if a baseball club or a weapon, have NOTHING to do in normal daily life with its normal problems. I was stuck in traffic in the city. A car bumped the car in front...just a little fender bender. The guy in front got out of the car with a club and started walking toward the guy who hit him....looking like he planned to crush his skull. Another bystander got out of his truck with a gun.
