1. I hear you about more instructors increases the availability of instruction and therefore the opportunity for a skydiver to learn to wingsuit. However have you considered.... First by mandating that only "official" instructors may instruct-you just decreased the number of skydivers that can assist other skydivers in learning to WS by excluding current WS skydivers that have been safely mentoring all along. Another biggie that I believe most everyone is missing on this point..... Manufacturer insrtuctors have at their disposal numerous wingsuits in all different sizes for new WS skydivers from the manufacturer. No out of pocket cost to them. Currently the WS mentors out there seem to hang onto their old WS and end up offering those suits for other skydivers to learn on. Limited to skydivers that will fit in their old suit, but opens opportunties for others. Now take a skydiver who goes thru this proposed USPA instructor rating. Is he going to buy a bunch of wingsuits out of pocket to outfit his WS students???? How would this work? Who could afford that!? Do you really think the manufacturers are going to supply every new USPA WS instructor with a pile of WS?
2. It doesn't matter where you learn to wingsuit. You can get the absolute best instruction, go through the excersises on the ground over and over until you are raw . BUT once you are in the air the feedback sensation may be overwhelming and nobody regardless of their ability to teach or your previous experience and ability to absorb this will be a factor in predicting the outcome of your first flight. You can have the very best instructor with you in the air and in the case of instability or spiraling the showcase instructor will be powerless to "TOP DOCK" and fix your situation. YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN IN WINGSUITS. So yes a PDF with simple verbal description and graphics would be acceptable so would having a good instructor if you want. Literally ANYBODY could state they have a fool proof way of exiting to avoid tail strikes or skydiver proof way of navigatiing the dropzone pattern and then not give at least a verbal discription of it. My guess is verbal description just wouldn't be that revolutionary. +10 on your post. Once you're out the door in a WS you are on your own! The information in the SIM is an excellent thing to have-I make sure anyone that wants to try a WS reads it, then I also go over even more points. Go do a jump with the person first if you don't know them and make sure their skills/jump numbers are good. I believe using the SIM and the above is sufficient. This isn't AFF. I understand the folk who are pushing safety-but as we've already found out you can't idiot proof everything without draconian measures. I can't help but remember the past push by some for "official course/instructors for freefly; even an official course of instruction for automati! So make a minimum jump number mandatory-you bet. Require they read the SIM and use an appropriate beginner suit-yes. If you want, even have the S&TA or DZ manager/DZO give pre-approval. But mandatory instruction set up similar to AFF- NO WAY!
3. Remember this great advantage too!!! Unbelievable!!!!! http://www.wthr.com/video?clipId=7054149&autostart=true well I tried to make it url....guess I'm a brainfart today.....
4. OK, reading this makes me want to spend even more $ for a new ws even though I can't really afford it. But then I saw that about a 135lber...... What about us real world well over 200 lbers out the door?
5. How is it ever right to have such a hatred anger in wanting another human dead. ___________________________________________ Be the victim/Your loved one is the victim..............
6. A boss is like a diaper.........always on your ass and full of shit.
7. Which is what I'd like to know.......at least what most folks perception of it is when it comes to swooping. Do you agree "threading the crack" is pushing the envelope? Seems changes are in the wind.........and I figure the general perception of swooping in the skydiving community is going to play a big part in which way it may go.
8. Just wanting to get a handle on how most folk see things when it comes to swooping. Seems it's commonly accepted that wingsuiting/freeflying/camera all increase risks, however they don't rise to the level of "pushing the envelope". Also I'm sure that most everyone agrees that Jeb's "threading the crack" for example is absolutely pushing the envelope as is BASE. So what about swooping?
9. reply to no one in particular- Don't we tell noobs not get too gadget dependent? An audible could very well fail and your eyeball altimeter better be on anyway? This just seems like a slippery slope......... If your reactions a bit dulled-either lack of sleep, hung over or whatever-a device won't make up for it. So instead of he dropped a toggle or was low/slow, not low but still slow, then it would be his gadget malfunctioned? Same outcome huh? vs earning the experience by slowly gradually patiently pushing the envelope? Just food for thought..............
10. Go back in time............... Just wish I could undo the friends that have died or been maimed skydiving...................... But yes I still choose to jump................... Sorry, just been thinkin and rememberin too much lately.............
11. An open door is not a major issue I don't want to violate any copyright-so if it covers it-credit to "parachuting the skydiver's handbook" by Dan Poynter. Here's a pic that shows that an open door can be a very big deal....... Pics worth more than a thousand words-please take it seriously.....
12. SC engines are fine too. Bigger part is looking for a hp/tq curve that favors low end tq no matter if SC or turbo or not. When I was doing a fair amt of towing around a lot of horses I had a turbodiesel-cant beat them for towing!
13. Very good to see you paying attention like that- A little additional food for thought for you- Any hills around the DZ that the aircraft climbs over? Then that 1000ft/1600ft etc. just became a lot less....... Also consider any hills for your planned breakoff and pull altitudes-good example of this is in San Diego.
14. Just do what I've done-show them the pic in Poynter's (parachuting the skydiver's handbook)book of the Cessna ripped open when a reserve went out the door-that pic is worth a thousand words!!!!
15. Hey if you mix up the gatorade and piss bottles just think of it as recycling.
16. No night heli but I did enjoy some night wingsuit.....just gotta pay attention to navigatin!
17. great comments on there- "Advised my daughter not to pee outside because it would attract old goats"!
18. OK, there-first pic upload was over 100kb..... I think they look good on an Otter!
19. A few friends had asked me about this incident-then saw the posts here and finally watched the whole video myself. Replies to no one in particular. And yes my perspective is from one who worked patrol for quite a few years even if I work from a desk now. And yup, I had complaints from the public also-handled at watch commander level. That's why you roll tape! First off-bad bad tactics! When the cop yells about a fucking idiot-he should be addressing himself-if the driver was a bad guy-with or without a permit and with a gun or hell even a knife-he would of been dead in that back seat no doubt about it and maybe his partner too. Secure the scene first. Next-yes pretty obvious from the comments made about the location that it's a known not good area and time of night-they are up to no good. next part of that-shitty tactics for getting a solid bust for the prostitution-think like a defense lawyer to shut down those arguments of "I knew her from driving a cab" or like above comments "maybe Williams sister was best friends with the hooker". Seperate the parties and get statements from all on what when where who why. Then you have the prostitution bust on pimp john and hooker. Pretty obvious also the cop doesn't like the idea of CCW from his statements. (personally I think CCW can be a very good thing) But yes this CCW holder is an idiot out trolling for hookers-so do your job to get a solid bust for that and (if their laws cover that) then it's revoked. Yes he does make threats-and with his statements about "executing " the guy-now if he does shoot the next CCW holder he contacts-even if it was with good cause and in real self defense-he's opened himself up to civil and criminal charges when they go back to this video. Idiot! Why let the other two go? Wait till they're run-verify name and dob, they got warrants? Never saw the prostitute close enough-but is she actually under 18? Big added charges would be there for pimp and john. And I wouldn't want to work with this guy unless this is a one time just having a real bad day-I've had calls before that I had code 4, then a hothead showed up and wound everybody back up-real pia! And these guys make everybody elses jobs that much more difficult. OK, off soapbox lol.
20. the stupid ones who think torture is ok by the state are the ones i worry about... Actually I just consider myself a realist. And as an example the recent arrest of the Imam and 2 of his sons for collecting and sending money to terrorists-yes he went through the motions of obtaining a piece of paper that said he was a US citizen, however there is no way I would consider him as such. More like a terrorist on a mission that included gettting citizenship here to complete his mission. So if he just disappeared (and secrets were kept secret-yes like Jimmy Hoffa!) instead of being arrested-and we even anything knew about it-I figure I could read between the lines. Either he went into hiding or someone scooped him up. And I have to ask again-if whatever happened to one of these guys actually prevented your own kids along with hundreds of others from being raped tortured and blown up-would you honestly give a fuck? What would the parents of the kids in Beslan have to say? Before and then after? And I do realize that whatever moral stand anyone may have sitting behind a keyboard would more than likely change completely if they were instead sitting outside their kid's school hearing them scream. Because I'm just a realist.
21. Seems like a lot of naive people around. You think every country hasn't done "whatever neccesary" over the years? You think if torture did lead to Osama that we would ever really know? Do you really think the real secrets are ever going to come to light? At least not for a long while if ever? Hey! Where's Jimmy Hoffa!!!!!! Hell, what the Soviet Union had running in biological warfare factories during the cold war is still coming to light, and we'll probably never hear all of it. (They even weaponized Ebola-some scary shit!) And if taking a terrorist and skinning the bastard alive (of course keep it a damn secret!-loose lips sink ships!) kept them from carrying out an attack on US schools like in Beslan Russia- think I'd really give a fuck? I realize this post will probably stir up some shit-I just consider it a dose of reality..... Fact is intel has come out of Afghanistan that one of their plans has been attacks on US middle schools. If that intel has helped prevent that horror from happening to your own kids would you honestly give a fuck how it was obtained?
22. What size main will fit in your rig? Quite a few folk in your situation have simply rented a larger main at first. Now the reserve size is another whole discussion......
