I would just comment, don't depend on the jump leader to step outside and measure the wind speed. We are all responsible for our own safety & decisions. If winds are an issue, go evaluate them for yourself and tell the jump leader you need to stand down if that's the case.] I agree completely. I didn't try to put the blame on anyone but myself, I just tried to point out that without all the hard facts it's easy to make a stupid choice as this one really was. It was MY choice and I fucked up, end of story. Therefore I'm really careful as a jump leader when the winds start to increase, I tell my fellow jumpers about it and recommend the low experienced ones to sit a couple of loads out, as I read a quote "It’s better to be on the ground, wishing you were in the air. Nope. I'd stay in the plane. But if asked the samt thing 1 year ago I'd have jumped any way. This 'wisdom' comes from a weekend with really shitty weather and on the sunday we got a broken sky instead of a complete cloud cover as the days before. The wind was quite hard, later I was told it gusted up to 30-32 knots, but I didn't think it was to bad. BAD thinking. We did our jump and all was okay until I got my feet on the ground. A gust of wind actually got me airborn again flying backwards and I landed on my back 20 feet away... I was dragged 60 feet over the grass before I was able to collapse my chute. A horrible experience with a broken ego at the time. To be honest, if the jump leader would have bothered to step outside and meassure the wind speed to tell us the correct information BEFORE we took off I would have stayed on the ground. Ofcourse I have a cut away on my cam helmet. In fact this is required on camerahelmets in Sweden. Tested it on the ground for the same reason I yank out my reserve when I have it repacked, to get an idea of the ammount of force needed to cut it free. A cut away system on my helmet is for me as having a reserve parachute. I got myself a Mamba about 1½ years ago and I use it for all my jumping except camera. Does it even exist such stupidity???? Well the main thing is this.... The pilot is always in charge while being in the aircraft, and the pilot alone decides if one should get the f**k out or not. We have an intercom for the jumpmaster - pilot communication and this is a really good solution. I was told a funny, (since all ended well), story from a couple of years before my jumping days begun. Our club had rented an AN-2 due to service on our regular aircraft. None of the jumpers were rally familiar with this type of aircraft. While ascending to jump altitude the engine suddenly went dead, and the pilot realized that he had forgot to turn the carburetor heater on and that was the reason. So he turned it on and restarted the engine. When he turned his head to tell that all was under control the entire 'load' was gone. As soon as the motor went silent the JM opened the door and gave the exit command. They had a hard time finding everybody who landed (far) out. The only one who didn't land out was the pilot This is a classical example that the pilot - JM communication is extremely important.
