Newbie Unintentional Spin Question
GravityGirl replied to skrovi's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
No body is perfectly semetrical. So trying to force a perfectly semetrical position is futile. For those with unintentional turns, I find it best to have them maintain firm pressure with your hips, a good effort to hold that "box-man" or "lazy W" arm position, point your toes into the wind.... and let the rest of your body be fluid. You cannot force the wind. The wind will win. You can only go with it. Think of a flag. The cloth flows fluid in the wind and maintains it's direction. If the cloth was a stiff piece of metal it would spin. Just don't let your legs flap like a flag. Constant pressure on those hips down and legs out. Everything else.... fluid. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Peace and Blue Skies! Bonnie ==>Gravity Gear! -
Converting it to a BOC, may not make it suitable for vertical flight. If you plan on sit flying or going head down, you may need to make other mods or wait until you can get a more modern rig. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Peace and Blue Skies! Bonnie ==>Gravity Gear!

end cell closure on my pilot168
GravityGirl replied to billyg23's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I haven't seen one give anyone "the spins" on opening. End cell hesitation yes. But generally good on heading soft openings. What is your wing loading? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Peace and Blue Skies! Bonnie ==>Gravity Gear! -
So the fingertraps have come out on my toggles, below the knot.
GravityGirl replied to grue's topic in Gear and Rigging
If he has a knot, it is doubtfull that the toggles will come off. That is if they are properly attached. But the excess hanging out can cause a hesitation or minor snag through the ring. At flare time, that might mean that one side hesitates just long enough to induce a turn that is not desired on landing. Grue, do you have a finger trapping tool? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Peace and Blue Skies! Bonnie ==>Gravity Gear! -
Emergency Procedures question
GravityGirl replied to Skykat108's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
If that handle was fully extracted, I would just pull my reserve handle. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Peace and Blue Skies! Bonnie ==>Gravity Gear! -
But they don't cover the rings, JP. Fluff flaps? Oh no. That's not nice either. How about Logo Flaps? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Peace and Blue Skies! Bonnie ==>Gravity Gear!

I don't think the dryer is a good idea. Hang it outside in fresh air. (Out of direct sunlight) You may have to wash and hang dry. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Peace and Blue Skies! Bonnie ==>Gravity Gear!

You know what I think would be really neat? Maybe we could do a briefing on the Waiver Video that is similar to an Airplane briefing. Everyone know that there is a floatation device under your seat cushion or for land flights that your seat cushion can actually be used as flotation device. THis is how your seatbelt works. Should we expereince a sudden loss of pressure.... Maybe some simple briefings like toggle location, chest strap location, etc. The student will likely not even think of it.... unless things actually happen. Just a thought. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Peace and Blue Skies! Bonnie ==>Gravity Gear!

over priced skydiving helmet - e.g. bonehead and etc.
GravityGirl replied to dropzone_moron's topic in Gear and Rigging
cheap ??? come on.... it's got the highest price/quality/comfort ratio IMHO (around 160$ for a piece of plastic) I'd rather pay 200$ for a piece of carbon I beg to differ. We sell the Gath Convertible for far less than you quoted. And they actually have a crash test rating: CLASS OF PROTECTION Simple design category (CAT.1) of the personal protective equipment (EC DIRECTIVE) regulations 1992. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Peace and Blue Skies! Who the f*ck would want to be me anyhow??
GravityGirl replied to ACMESkydiver's topic in The Bonfire
Yup. Jose Bautista uses my social security number to work in the US. He owes all sorts of back child support for which the feds have tried to dock my social security. Not that there will be any left for me anyways..... I had to file a police report and notify the credit reporting agencies, send letter and copies of the above to EVERY creditor he used. If I every find him, he is getting a big phat bill for my time. If he doesn't have the money, he can pay with labor. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Peace and Blue Skies! Bonnie ==>Gravity Gear! -
They are pretty damned reliable. I prefer to jump with one. But when mine is out for service, I still jump without it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Peace and Blue Skies! Bonnie ==>Gravity Gear!

over priced skydiving helmet - e.g. bonehead and etc.
GravityGirl replied to dropzone_moron's topic in Gear and Rigging
I like the skydiving helmets for their lower profile, the audible altimeter pocket and and no snag points. There are other helmets we borrow from other industires. We carry Pro-Tec and Gath. Both has actual crash test ratings, but carry some minor set backs. The Pro-Tec is not as low profile and a bit less comfortable in freefall. A bit noisier as well. The beefier Gath (convertible) does not have a suitable pocket for an audible altimeter.... yet. The two choices above are great lower price point choices. As far as looks go. I think ALL helmets look kinda dorky, so a Pro-Tec or Gath is no different. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Peace and Blue Skies! Bonnie ==>Gravity Gear! -
What is the AVERAGE WL of people on 1st gear at your DZ
GravityGirl replied to koppel's topic in Instructors
.08 - 1.1 But almost never under a 170. If I have to put a light jumper on a 170 that I know will downsize quickly, I'll offer a trade-in so they are not out of pocket much, if anything. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Peace and Blue Skies! Bonnie ==>Gravity Gear! -
My advise would be to stick with the engineering degree. Get a SIDE job at the DZ to pay for your habit. Become a kick ass engineer and design us some new equipment. There are "real" jobs in the industry for engineers. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Peace and Blue Skies! Bonnie ==>Gravity Gear!

If you didn't talk to her, how do you know she didn't see you and had tunnel vision on her landing spot? Could it be that your pattern was not predictable? You say you were on your base leg when she over took you. How would she know where you were going to turn final? Also, was her parachute smaller than yours? If so, you did no favors by hanging brakes. An important thing to consider when things get congested: Assess up high which canopies are out-desending you. Hold brakes ONLY when you are up high to allow them to fall in below you. Holding brakes at 200 or 300 feet implys indecision. It makes you a traffic hazard. I'm not saying that this was the case. But maybe look at what you could have done differently to prevent this at the last moment. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Peace and Blue Skies! Bonnie ==>Gravity Gear!

I've always been under the impression that when the container is held shut by the closing loop, it's a PC in tow. When the container is open but the bag fails to come out, it's called a container lock. The pilot chute is not necessarily "towing" on anything. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Peace and Blue Skies! How much $ can you make as a jumpmaster/instructor?
GravityGirl replied to JT_76's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
It really depends on what drop zone you are at. Is it seasonal? What kind of volume do they do? I used to "live" on my income as an AFF JM. I lived in a van and headed south every winter. If I chose to work at a DZ like Skydive Chicago or Perris, it would be a different story. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Peace and Blue Skies! Bonnie ==>Gravity Gear!
