Food for thought. By leonard Pitts. Opinions?
akarunway replied to akarunway's topic in Speakers Corner
Party allegiance, bias are swaying our opinions A question for my Republican friends: Would you still love George W. Bush if he were Bill Clinton? Seriously. If it were Clinton who had invaded Iraq based on erroneous intelligence, Clinton whose decisions had led to the deaths of over 1,200 soldiers, would you be foursquare behind him the way you are for Bush? Would you still support him even as he is vilified by half the country and much of the world? And for my Democratic friends: Would you have felt the same about Clinton had he been Bush? Had it been Bush who had an affair with a White House intern, Bush who looked the nation in the eye and lied about it, would you have been so willing to forgive? Would you still have opposed removing him from office? In other words, are you guilty of double standards and outright bias? I'll save you the trouble: Yes. WE THINK WE'RE OBJECTIVE That's not what our self-image says, of course. We like to see ourselves as principled types who sift the facts before forming an opinion. But for most of us, this is pure poppycock. We are perfectly willing to ignore any fact that contradicts what we believe. Maybe you already knew this intuitively. Now you can know it to a scientific certainty. For which you can thank Drew Westen. He's a professor of psychology at Emory University, author of a new and still-unpublished study testing whether people make decisions based on bias or fact. Bias won hands down. In a key scenario, respondents were lead to believe a soldier was accused of torturing people at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. The fictional soldier claimed to have been following orders from superiors who told him the Geneva Convention had been suspended. He supposedly wanted to subpoena President Bush and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to prove his case. Respondents were asked if he should have that right. Some were presented with strong ''evidence'' corroborating the soldier's story. Others had only his word to go on. PREDICTING OPINIONS But the strength or weakness of the evidence turned out to be immaterial. Researchers were able to predict people's opinion over 80 percent of the time based simply on their opinions of the Bush administration, the GOP, the military and human rights groups. Those who had less affection for the president sided with the soldier even when the evidence was weak. And fans of the president tended to side with him even when the evidence was overwhelming. We believe what we want, facts be damned. ''The scary thing,'' says Westen, ``is the extent to which you can imagine this influencing jury decisions, boardroom decisions, political decisions . . .'' I'm reminded of a colleague of mine who says we Americans increasingly seem to embrace separate ''truths,'' reflecting not objective reality, but political orientation. Some of us even get our news exclusively from those sources that affirm our truths. He calls it living in alternate realities. It's because of that separateness that there often seems to be no moral center or intellectual coherence to much of what passes for public discourse these days. Our principles are situational, our willingness to marshal critical thought goes off and on like a light switch. We'll believe -- or not believe -- whatever it takes to win the argument. Winning it is all that matters. WINNERS CAN BE WRONG And never mind that it's perfectly possible to win the argument and still be wrong. Westen laughed when I told him I found his study depressing. If there's a silver lining, it's the 15 or so percent of respondents who actually bothered to consider the evidence when forming their opinions. We'd all be well advised to follow their example. Forget what you want to believe. Seek the truth and have the courage to believe that. No republican conspiracy theory. Get over it. ----------------------------------------------------------------Who mentioned a REPUBLICAN? I do find it odd that an engine and debri were found over a mile before the impact site and all the witnesses were ignored and the last 3 mins. of the CVR disappeared and people were put under gag orders. I think the plane damn well needed to be shot down. I'm just tired of the fuckin govt. lying I hold it true, whate'er befall; I feel it, when I sorrow most; 'Tis better to have loved and lost Than never to have loved at all.

I’m simply surrounded by lovers, Since Da made his fortune in land; They’re comin’ in crowds like the plovers To ax for me hand. There’s clerks and policemen and teachers, Some sandy, some black as a crow; Ma says ye get used to the creatures, But, ach, I dunno! The convent is in a commotion To think of me taking a spouse, And they wonder I hadn’t the notion Of taking the vows. ‘Tis a beautiful life and a quiet, 1 And keeps ye from going below, As a girl I thought I might try it, But, ach, I dunno! I’ve none but meself to look after, An’ marriage it fills me with fears, I think I’d have less of the laughter And more of the tears. I’ll not be a slave like me mother, With six of us all in a row, Even one little baby’s a bother, But, ach, I dunno! There’s a lad that has taken me fancy, I know he’s a bit of a limb, And though marriage is terrible chancy, I’d -- chance it with him. He’s coming to-night -- oh -- I tingle, From the top of me head to me toe, ===================== I hold it true, whate'er befall; I feel it, when I sorrow most; 'Tis better to have loved and lost Than never to have loved at all.

I have done it again. One year in every ten I manage it-- A sort of walking miracle, my skin Bright as a Nazi lampshade, My right foot A paperweight, My face featureless, fine Jew linen. Peel off the napkin O my enemy. Do I terrify?-- The nose, the eye pits, the full set of teeth? The sour breath Will vanish in a day. Soon, soon the flesh The grave cave ate will be At home on me And I a smiling woman. I am only thirty. And like the cat I have nine times to die. This is Number Three. What a trash To annihilate each decade. What a million filaments. The peanut-crunching crowd Shoves in to see Them unwrap me hand and foot-- The big strip tease. Gentlemen, ladies These are my hands My knees. I may be skin and bone, Nevertheless, I am the same, identical woman. The first time it happened I was ten. It was an accident. The second time I meant To last it out and not come back at all. I rocked shut As a seashell. They had to call and call And pick the worms off me like sticky pearls. Dying Is an art, like everything else. I do it exceptionally well. I do it so it feels like hell. I do it so it feels real. I guess you could say I've a call. It's easy enough to do it in a cell. It's easy enough to do it and stay put. It's the theatrical Comeback in broad day To the same place, the same face, the same brute Amused shout: 'A miracle!' That knocks me out. There is a charge For the eyeing of my scars, there is a charge For the hearing of my heart-- It really goes. And there is a charge, a very large charge For a word or a touch Or a bit of blood Or a piece of my hair or my clothes. So, so, Herr Doktor. So, Herr Enemy. I am your opus, I am your valuable, The pure gold baby That melts to a shriek. I turn and burn. Do not think I underestimate your great concern. Ash, ash-- You poke and stir. Flesh, bone, there is nothing there-- A cake of soap, A wedding ring, A gold filling. Herr god, Herr Lucifer Beware Beware. Out of the ash I rise with my red hair And I eat men like air. ------------------------------------------ Ya got me. Do tell I hold it true, whate'er befall; I feel it, when I sorrow most; 'Tis better to have loved and lost Than never to have loved at all.

Blow out, you bugles, over the rich Dead! There's none of these so lonely and poor of old, But, dying, has made us rarer gifts than gold. These laid the world away; poured out the red Sweet wine of youth; gave up the years to be Of work and joy, and that unhoped serene, That men call age; and those who would have been, Their sons, they gave, their immortality. Blow, bugles, blow! They brought us, for our dearth, 0 Holiness, lacked so long, and Love, and Pain, 1Honour has come back, as a king, to earth, And paid his subjects with a royal wage; And Nobleness walks in our ways again; And we have come into our heritage. I hold it true, whate'er befall; I feel it, when I sorrow most; 'Tis better to have loved and lost Than never to have loved at all.

French 'Spiderman' Climbs World's Tallest Building Dec 25, 4:16 AM (ET) TAIPEI, Taiwan (Reuters) - Daredevil climber Alain Robert, known as the French Spiderman, defied stiff winds and rain to climb the world's tallest skyscraper, Taipei 101, in the Taiwan capital Saturday. Robert, dressed in a red rain jacket, tights and climbing shoes, shimmied up ropes hung down the sides of the 101-story, 1,667-foot office tower, reaching the top in around four hours. "It was a very big moment and I felt a lot of satisfaction as I was already so tired and nearly all of my muscles were painful. I felt completely relieved," said Robert after taking the ride down in one of the tower's elevators, the world's fastest. Several hundred onlookers and shoppers gathered at the base of the tower watching and cheering Robert's progress via live images beamed onto a large television screen. At times he disappeared from view as clouds whipped past the top of the tower enveloping the upper levels. The 42-year-old Frenchman has scaled scores of well-known structures around the world including the Empire State Building and the Eiffel Tower -- often without permission or any safety equipment or ropes. This time Robert was wearing a harness attached to safety ropes for the entire climb. He used the ropes to pull himself up most of the way, using his hands and feet to climb up the walls for only short sections. "Everybody knows me throughout the world for my ascents climbing free solo without using safety devices, just with my bare hands, but this time the game was a bit different," Robert said. He said the management had requested he wear the ropes and safety equipment, which had also become necessary due to rain making the windows and frames very slippery. Robert said was hopeful of returning to attempt the climb without any ropes. The $1.7 billion Taipei 101 last year surpassed the twin Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, which Robert has also scaled, as the world's tallest building. The shopping mall at the base of Taipei 101 has already opened for business, but the building will be officially opened on New Year's eve. Other parts, like the idea we pay high taxes, are funny, at best. (Our taxes are very low in this country.) ------------------------------------------------------------>Yeah right. If i work 7 days a week to make more money for whatever reasons they want 50% of my fucking packcheck at least. Then add sales taxes on EVERYTHING I buy. I don't have all them loopholes all them rich bastards do. It's getting way outta hand. Boston Tea Party anyone? Amen Brother. He'd get my vote for POTUS anyday. Hope he means what he says. If we had more like him in DC maybe we could change things. In my department we have some old hag. She's sooo freakin whiney. Sorry about you're Xmas. The plumbing thing. You need to leave valves cracked to stop freezing and you can't solder a joint correctly w/ water on the pipes or incompatable solder if it's an older house. They need to cut out the joints and start anew. Call a real plumber and backcharge your landlord. You find that sad? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Refusing due process to the accused is simply barbaric, by standards of any free country. You know, like the countries that head the UN Human Rights Committees and torture innocent people at home. How come they aren't included in the outrage? ===============================================I don't even wanna hear this trash. In my youthfull rowdy days I spent a few days in different county jails in the US. No due process if you where broke and no family or friends to pull strings. I've seen some nasty shit bordering on torture. I watched a guy eat razor blades to get outta of cell we were in. Human rights in the US KISS MY ASS . And all my jail time was for petty partying bullshit. Never hurt anyone. I've seen many a cop beat the fuck outta someone for no reason other than there own pleasure.
