AAD's & Personal Acceptable Risk Thresholds
jumper03 replied to Hooknswoop's topic in Safety and Training
And using a safety device to exceed a person's risk/benefit limit or to compensate for lack of ability or other's lack of ability is also poor judgement. Derek I don't encourage that. You encourage people to prove they can do risky jumps without a proven safety device. Some people say all skydiving is an indication of poor judgment. I get the feeling everyone is saying the same thing but in different ways here. Kallend - I'm in no way saying you shouldn't do 10 way, I'm in no way saying you don't have the abilitty, training experience to do it. The danger is when a jumper that DOES NOT have the experience/training/ability gets in on that jump only because they have an aad. Scars remind us that the past is real -

Two I heard recently that made think "holy shit...." 1) "I unhooked my RSL because I read on the internet that an RSL is bad" 2) "I will never die skydiving" I calmly explained that if that was the only reason the RSL was unhooked, the jumper needed to re-evaluate the reasoning. As for number 2 - If that jumper gets on a load I'm on, they can keep my ticket, I'm getting off of it. Scars remind us that the past is real

AAD's & Personal Acceptable Risk Thresholds

I have to disagree with you here. Lets say you do that 10-way with an aad that you wouldn't do without. You're taking on a dive that you wouldn't feel safe on w/o that aad - what have you done to the other 9 peoples risk level? The heart of the question is WHY will you not do the 10 way w/o the aad? Are you not trained for it? Have the experience? (I know you are more than capable- just hypothetical here...) If you don't have the experience or confidence and it is the aad that ups your safety level such that you will do that jump - you're endangering other jumpers now. So I would say yes, your personal risk evaluation is everyones business as is everyone elses yours. We're not alone in the sky - unless you want to do solo's then do what ever the heck you want. So we use them on the main and can use them on some reserves. I saw a bridle attached to a canopy this weekend with a slink and thought "damn thats cool!" Got me thinking - anywhere else we can use slinks instead of metal? What about using larger cord in the same fashion for hip rings? chest rings? Scars remind us that the past is real

Okay fine - you don't go to iraq. Whats the chance we will be invaded? I think the Marines can handle that. Or have an insurrection or the need for private citizens to execute the laws of the union? That's what the cops are for. So since none of those threats are real today, then I would argue the 2nd amendment is no longer needed and all guns would need to be given up - interpreting the 2nd strictly of course. What time & where? I would like a piece of the meteorite please.

oh I think so. Either way, wouldn't you rather be known as a nice person? Scars remind us that the past is real

while no on this one - I think there should be a requirement you know what the heck you are voting on. How many people in this country go to the polls with an informed opinion? Do you think they've thought through the school bond issue or water bill they just voted on? probably not and probably did more damage than good... Okay - thats for another thread.... Your advocating personal not trained in military combat be called upon to serve the country because they are capable of firing a weapon? WOW! Most of the people I know that own/buy Full Auto Weapons are not in any shape to be defending our country. Unbelieveable who said anything about not training? Scars remind us that the past is real

My understanding of the 2nd amendment is that the right to keep those arms was such that they could be used in the defense of our country and when the time came that the country called, the gun owners could answer, be armed and ready to march. As I said earlier - if you want full auto go ahead but I think the country can call on you anytime to be shipped out. It seems to me you want the priviledge of owning such a firearm without the duty and/or responsibilty implied by the second amendment (as I read it). Scars remind us that the past is real
