I get a bunch of sites along these lines as well as this page which is not mine, even though I attend USC.

I like toast! Yes, as do I. It is warm and crispy and a perfect place for jelly to lay.

There are a plethora of reasons why one computer can be faster than the next, I was addressing direct comparison of clock speeds, and the pitfalls therein. The processor on a video card is clocked at a fraction of the rate a CPU operates, and yet the CPU would be brought to its knees by some of the linear transformations the video card can do without breaking a sweat. So, as I said, it depends heavily on the application.

What if you're in a bar, sitting by yourself, drinking, and posting on the internet with a laptop and wifi... ...oh no, I've gone cross-eyed.

Punishing someone, even marginally, for closing a credit card account in good standing is lunatic. I've twice discovered credit cards open and activated under my name and ssn that I only found out about because I check my credit report regularly. Thankfully neither had been used.

If range is a big issue, and you're buying all new hardware, I'd look into products adopting 802.11n technologies. While the speed of the standard will be bumped up ~2x from g->n, range is the biggest issue being addressed.

Albert Einstein wasn't more influential than Oprah, but then we aren't talking about the same target demographic, are we? Hitler was rather influential as well.

You have to understand a bit about computer engineering to follow the difference between the x86 (PC) and Power PC (MAC) architechtures. Suffice it to say, "Macs can get more done in a clock cycle than a PC" How much more depends heavily on the nature of the application. /eta: back to your original question. I use XP Pro on my desktop at home, and a combination of Win2k/Redhat/HP-Unix at work, but if I was going to get a laptop today, I'd probably get a powerbook. OSX let's you have your cake (Unix environment/filesystem) and eat it to (very good/polished application set and gui)

create a playlist in itunes called "ipod mini" or something like that add the music you want to go on the ipod mini to that playlist (drag and drop) connect your ipod mini, click no to any dialog that pops up go to edit>preferences and click the ipod tab under sync options choose "only sync certain playlists" and select your ipod mini playlist click okay to close this out, then right click on your ipod mini over on the left and select "update"

to get your answer, ask yourself why whuffos ask, "whuffo?" My guess is some combination of seeing all this as a glorified amusement park ride, misunderstanding the risk or attention paid to safety, and being unwilling to dedicate serious time and money to a hobby. when you stop doing that, you stop asking whuffo.

the moral here isn't "install linux, problem solved" it's that if you can send someone a program and convince them it's a good idea to run it, you can do whatever you damn well please to their computer that their user has the rights to do. It doesn't make a shit of difference what operating system/security software you're running.

I got a place to live that's close to work so I don't have to sit on the freeways every morning and evening. And longer drives (to the dropzone, or campus) just take some timing to avoid the traffic. I find that true of most big cities. Having more people around does take it's toll on parking availability for every day stuff, and the touristy type places. The beaches, however, have been pretty accessible, and you can get away and go on a day hike just outside the city and see very few people. The real downside? It's expensive.
