Gun laws and school massacres - a price that just has to be paid?

Thank you, that's interesting and helped me see the picture far more clearly. As far as the wikipedia comment, strangely, it is regarded as a valid source in academia.... -
Gun laws and school massacres - a price that just has to be paid?

I guess my other post either wasn't very good or I'm rubbish in general and thus being ignored, however I'll give it another go, just incase I can come up with something a bit better http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_in_New_York_City says that crime in New York has been in decline. Could this be partly due to the restriction on guns? A bit more evidence? http://www.nysun.com/article/25547 Next Mood Swing: 6 minutes -
Gun laws and school massacres - a price that just has to be paid?
Ripple replied to The_Almighty's topic in Speakers Corner
I wonder if there is a psychological reason for choosing a gun for a killing spree rather than a bomb? Maybe killing someone with a gun would give one a close up and personal feeling, which could be desirable to a person on the rampage. Obviously a bomb doesn't do that. I'm speculating, I hasten to add. -
Ah, no, not misread. I guess I thought that your lack of response about laminitis/founder meant that that's what she had and that, plus the problem with the coffin bone led me to think that laminitis/navicular syndrome were potential issues. Ok, so it's far too complicated to make guestimates and as someone who's evented, point-to-pointed, competed at advanced dressage and worked at the Shadwell stud, I know, not only how difficult it can be to do the right thing at the right time in every medical case, I also know how painful it is to lose a much loved horse, which is principally why I posted. As I said before, I hope you do find the reason for her demise
-
I have to reiterate, 15 really isn't old. She should only have been halfway through her life, probably not even that. In cases of chronic laminitis/founder where there can be no cure - as you found out last spring, it's kindest to put the animal to sleep right away. Next Mood Swing: 6 minutes

Are you using IE? If you are and you have access to the Internet options, click the connection tab and if you're on a LAN, click the LAN settings, uncheck 'automatic settings' and uncheck 'use automatic configuration script'. However, it sounds like its the whole system that's protected... If you've got rights to install software - you could try installing Mozilla Firefox and trying that route. Next Mood Swing: 6 minutes

Enjoy it! (Says she with the princely one tandem ) I really hope so... if you do, it means I maybe able to one day.

Ed, are you talking about laminitis (sometimes called founder)? I've not heard of a case of laminitis actually killing a horse, although it is extremely painful and feeding lower grade hay, as you did, is essential to help treat the symptoms. I haven't heard of padded shoes, they sound excellent! I, too, am surprised that the mare would be at stud that long. A mare's breeding season lasts about four days and these occur every couple of weeks. Studs, in my experience, will only keep a mare for two weeks, maximum. If the client's vet finds the mare hasn't ovulated after covering, the mare can then be sent back to the stallion, rarely will she stay at the stud inbetween times. There does seem to be a link between mares going to stud and losing condition and this is corrected with feeding higher fat and fibre, lower protein content food. Many make the mistake of feeding alfalfa which is high in protein and very sweet thus does little for weight gain. As far as the extreme weight loss goes, there could be many causes, as you know. Anemia, neutrophilia and eosinophilia as well as others, are all worth mentioning. Eosinophilia is sometimes inaccurately understood as intestinal parasitism, whereas, this is not always the cause. Either way, I hope you get some answers, as has been said 15 years old is not old at all. Next Mood Swing: 6 minutes

Besides, flashing your lights is illegal To the OP, I drive between Junction 17 and Junction 15 of the M4 every day. It's not often I see people hogging the fast lane, infact, during rush hour I can't remember seeing it once. As for the speed limit, if you're doing 70 you'll probably be the slowest car there Next Mood Swing: 6 minutes

I'm sorry, I don't have time (or the energy) to do a search to see if this has been posted already, I'm up to my eyes in disaster management and I haven't slept properly for a while now I've received an alert to advise that there are a number of malicious websites and fraudulent e-mails attempting to exploit the events surrounding the Hurricane Katrina disaster. For example, some of these e-mails link to sites posing as charities asking recipients to donate money. Other e-mails are phishing attempts, which ask recipients to submit information such as bank usernames and passwords in order to donate money. If you make an attempt to follow the links within the fraudulent e-mails, they will connect to Websites that will try to install Malicious programs onto the user system. (Updated antivirus signatures may allow detection of this threat, but regular updates of virus definitions are required to ensure the maximum level of protection available from such threats). You are strongly advised to delete these e-mails as they arrive and not to "click" on any links they contain. further info here: http://www.itsafe.gov.uk/library/snippets/2005-snpt-006.html Next Mood Swing: 6 minutes

Sure, sure, I understand. That's why I think using films as an example is completely relevant. I think its in intrinsic part of being human to view someone laying down his life for what is perceived as the greater good, as a hero. That's why we have gallantry awards, I guess. Edit to add: This whole thing about morally right is the sticking point. What is morally ok with one country/person could be morally bankrupt with another. Next Mood Swing: 6 minutes

Ooo! Excellent! There's loads of examples of people dying for a cause. Deep Impact, Armageddon. And its not just films, the thought of someone laying down their life to save others/civillisation/etc. is hailed by everyone as deeply heroic. They're martyrs. "They'll name High Schools after us". Ok, I'm getting carried away with film metaphors. What have you done mr2mk1g?????????? Next Mood Swing: 6 minutes

What the hell is going on? On another note, I was at Heathrow Terminal 4 on Monday - there were about 20 armed police, 2 dog vans and about 7 vehicles including an armoured van just before departures. Does anyone know what it could have been about? Heightened security? Tip off? Next Mood Swing: 6 minutes

Both my mother (68) and sister (39) have this problem. All the symptoms you describe are exactly what they've had to deal with, my mother for 8 years before being correctly diagnosed. They're both now taking thyroxine with some success. My sister's energy levels are not what they used to be before her thyroid packed up, but they're much improved since taking the drug. The main problem she suffers now is weight gain. I understand that the States has a far better record of success in dealing with this, than the UK. So, hopefully you'll be sorted with no problems. I really feel for you, having seen what my mother and sister have been through. Will you see/have you seen an endocrinologist? If not, maybe it'd be worth asking to be referred? Although I believe the notion that anyone is winning the 'war on terrorism' is incorrect, I think three points are worth noting. Firstly we did not lose anything of any defence, security or financial importance. Secondly, many more lives could have been lost. Lastly, despite a few being traumatised too badly to return to 'normal', the majority are business as usual. These points, I believe, speak volumes for the effectiveness of our security measures, our responses, as well as the astounding resilience of the British people. Thus, it is becoming increasingly hard for terrorists to act, certainly in the UK. However, it is my belief that any 'war' will merely sustain and promote terrorist activity. If we wish to quell Al Qaeda, then we must prevent them access to resources - human resources in particular. At the moment, Al Qaeda has any number of new recruits and supporters, upset, disenfranchised, angry because of the perceived, and actual, image of the west. I believe that the only way to stop perpetuating this situation is to ally ourselves with the potential foe - much as the British did in the Malayan Emergency. The Iraq situation seems to have too many similarities to Vietnam... Next Mood Swing: 6 minutes

Um, I'm ashamed to say I didn't. I guess I was either too shocked, couldn't believe what I'd heard or just too taken up with the whole thing. Maybe all three. Another thing, I feel really guilty about feeling bad. I haven't been directly affected. I'm ok. Next Mood Swing: 6 minutes

Yeah, I hear you, I doubted myself at first. Its just so unbelievable. But I'm sure I did, after all its the last thing I'd expect to hear. And yes, I heard those things too after 9-11. Just bloody upsetting all round, as if it made any difference. Next Mood Swing: 6 minutes
