    Well, I told you the reason ...to piss folks off. The shut-down means there is now no money (as if there was plenty of money before the shut-down) to pay park employees to stand around and make sure no one drops a gum wrapper on the ground. There is, however, plenty of money to hire guards and reinforce the barriers around the open-air WW2 memorial to keep 90-100 year-old folks from running around wildly in their walkers and wheelchairs yelling "Lafayette, we are here!". (OK, wrong war, but you get my point)

    Relax! We're not really shut down ...only a few high-profile services that directly impact folks day-to-day lives and the "furlough" of hundreds of thousands of meaningless bureaucrat "workers". The intent is to piss off the public in an attempt to show what a bunch of wankers the House Repubs are (which they are, even though the Democrat-controlled Senate is actually responsible for the "shut-down"). The federal workers (even the parasitic bureaucrat class) are going to get paid for their "lost time" anyway, so they may as well get their asses back to work and "earn" it. The term "government shut-down" is only a useful political tool just as the term "Affordable Care Act" has nothing to do with "affordability" nor "care" and everything to do with creating even more bureaucracy and idiocy.

    So, for me, that would be once every 24 years. Now I understand why requiring a DL or state-issued ID might be considered to be such an oppressive requirement for some folks who might want to vote but can't prove who they are. Well, my main point is that if, during this renewal cycle, I'm eligible for online renewal (by just "telling" them who I am over the internet), why can I not use the same requirements for "in-person" renewal ...just show them my old DL and tell them my last 4 ssn.? They even have the further advantage of comparing my face with the picture on the old DL. I do understand that in 16 years I will have to provide BC or Passport. Or maybe the DHS regs which mandated these requirements are just not that important and someone is just writing rules to keep his job rather than coming up with meaningful, effective regulations.

    Just this past weekend I renewed my FL DL online. I did not have to provide any ID other than my DL# and a code number on the back of my existing license. The online form did ask for bday and last 4 of ssn. I just paid them the $55 and they mail me my new license. Although I haven't received it yet, I checked online for status and my new license is now good until 2021. (I guess they're going to use my pic from 2007 on the new license ...no matter, I still look the same.) HOWEVER, if I had physically gone to the DL office to renew in person, I would have been required to produce all the docs that Ron mentioned ...just so they could be sure that I'm me before issuing the renewal. Somehow, that doesn't make much sense to me but I don't make the rules. I guess DHS trusts you if you apply online (where no one actually sees who is filling out that form) but gets suspicious if you decide to apply in person with the DL you are renewing.
