  4. Actually he said that the Pope has the embodiment of Antichrist. He didn't say that he was; only that he demonstrated qualities of. Uhhh - it's only "embodyment". What a pussy this preacher! wouldn't go all the way, hu? Had wuss out where stuff gets emobied. But, hey, perhaps it still qualifies for Minor League WrestleMania "Biblical reasons"? ..that is pretty much an oxymoron to me. But I could probably find some good quotes in an Iassac Asimov novel (or Mad Magazine for that matter) if that would be of any help? 5. Post Execution Video World Reaction What ever "milestone" some people want to make out of this - in view of the civil war and widespread murdering in Iraq these days, this amounts to, at best , a footnote. 7. Whew! thanks man - i put Catholizism at the top of my list. Real cool "Catholzism a front for Satan", "The Pope is the AntiChrist" and "would crucify Jesus if he returned" This is almost as good as WrestleMania Cheers, T ******************************************************************* Fear causes hesitation, and hesitation will cause your worst fears to come true
  8. to someone for whom religion is incomprehensible hocus-pocus, but loves the absurd argument and uninhibited phantasy this thread is really amusing reading. It may not be the literal heights of Eugene Ionescu or Monty Python, but the reality show character makes up for it. I had caught myself pretending to study a poster or show window so that I could evesdrop on bizarre conversations about whether you can fit an angel through a needle's ear, the alledged wives of satan, detailed sex guides given of some scriptures, and, of course, who is the best in an arbitraryly sprawling spectrum of religious flavors. The fever and seriousness with which homeless bums and Harvard professors alike would engage in these bizarre and contorted discussions is always an amazing phenomenon in human psychology to me. In the end it seems religion is about one thing: Entertainment That's about one thing Roman's of 200 AD got right when Christians served as very credible actors in their lion shows. Unfortunately, these have come out of fashion and are somehow considered politically incorrect. By contrats atheists are incredibly boring. They have nothing to fight and argue about - all they occupy their minds with are the mundane issues of every day life that, in a depressingly sobering way, actually have well defined meanings and require tangible actions. No atheists has ever slaughtered another atheist for believing in the wrong flavor of atheism. How Utterly Lame!! Just in case old age and senility should catch up with me some day and I want to turn to some kind of religion - I would greatly appreciate any advance advice on which religion or facett of religion would have the highest entertainment value. Entertainment could be anything from an intriguing mythology of creatures, places or forces , the creative absurdity in theological arguments, a belligerent dispositions towards other religions, complex myrad of rules and moral codes, a broad reflection in scripture of psychological abberations of the human mind, and the prospects of a good fist fight. Thanks and Cheers, T ******************************************************************* Fear causes hesitation, and hesitation will cause your worst fears to come true
  9. The Manhatten Project may not have been combat duty but was "military service" in any other sense. There was no ambiguity about the military objectives behind the project, and any consceincious objector would have refused this work. These guys were definitely more efficient to do maximal damage on the battle field than any other three star general pushing papers at the Pentagon. 10. here's another one: How is mental functionality handled when you into the afterlife? More specifically this breaks down into questions like the following: Suppose your mind and/or personality deteriorates before you die, due to brain trauma, drug abuse, oxygen starvation, Alzheimers, coma, etc. In what kind of state of mind will you go to heaven. As a mental vegetable as you were at the time of death, or will time somehow be turned back and the mind and personality of some earlier state. What about only mild deteriorations like your garden variety old age senility and grumpyness. Will they be elgible for spool backs of mental state of these are alowed. Or if the state of mind at the point of death is important how is that point defined. Definitions of death can vary enough in time to make a significant difference between the degree to which a brain has deteriorated as a result of oxygen loss. Or what about people who never have the chance to develop mentally? The more drastic cases being infants that die during or shortly after birth, without every gaining any undertanding of the world or any notion of self. Or people born with serious mental impariments such as, for example, Dow syndrome etc. Will they bumped up to some higher level of consciousness when they go to heaven or are they just out of luck? What about milder discrepancies among people in developing mentally. People who are gifted or priviledged enough to get some higher education or similar intellecutal experiences, as opposed to people who are trapped at more modest intelectual levels. Is there a program in heaven to bump eveyone to an IQ of, say, 145 and give everyone the same mellow sweet temper to create devine equality? Or will the maximal or the terminal intellectual state be used? Or does the afterlife experience not depend on your mental state? (That is "experince" would mean something mysteriously different which is not dependent on the ability to perceive stuff - the latter being a special type of mental ability) Would that mean you'd just be running around deliriously in heaven chanting hallelulia all the time with no intellectual stimulus otr ambition? What if someone finds that so boring and silly they want to die a second death? 12. that would be one of my theories why Trump would go through the trouble suing a mediocre entertainer for talk that you can hear from may others too: - in order to have a high publicity forum where he can "correct" public perception about bankrupcy and "clean" his "legacy". 15. it was surely the right thing to do - but hardly a novel idea at the time. Unconditional surrender for Germany was a foregone conclusion among allies in the last year of war. And after Germany was unconditionally defeated, after Russia launched its attackes on Japan through China, and the US has the bomb no one seriously questioned to extend the same treatment to Japan, even when some Japanese politicians tried to attache terms in the last minute. 19. Lincoln easily has he highest average ranking among historian polls. ( 1.58 ) If you want to get a sense for the gravity and difficulty of the time look at the presidents right before and right after Lincoln. They are consistently rated among the worst. Buchanan honestly though that the break up of the United States was inevitable and there was no point trying to stop it. With someone other than Lincoln the split into a northern and a southern nation would have had a very high probability. Johnson, of course, stands for the reconstruction debacle, attempts to reverse the Emancipation Proclamation and the only impeachment justified by real political/power issues. As to Truman - there were certainly a few important decisions that could have gone another way and made our world look different today (Mashall vs Morgenthau, Israel vs Palestine, etc) . The cold was confrontation, though, was a huge train everyone saw coming from miles away, and socially Truman was pretty much a traditional new deal democrat. He did what he had to do without major blunders - but it's harder to find the depth in foresight or originality that you'd hope for in a #1 ranking. However, Truman seems to resonante a lot with conservatives these days: The moral decent guy, who is fighting the war he has to, who is so badly misunderstood by the public, but later vindicated by history. ... Ring a bell? You can safely bet your pay check that the name Truman comes up a lot in White House pep talks given to GWB these days. It is an open secret that GWB gets his comfort in the delusion to be a second coming of Truman. 20. they call is YOU for popular consumption, but, I guess, what they mean is the thing now termed WEB 2.0 Was this a good choice? I very definitely think so. The "Web 2.0" is likely to have a far greater impact on social change than the crap and maneuvering that is going on in the middle east - at much less cost in blood and money. We're sinking into this quite gradually adjusting our dayly habits when dealing with information bit by bit, so there is no one attention getting shock and awe moment. But stepping back you look at an incredible ant hill of collective information and intellectual symbiosis rising with 6 Billion potantial contributers, and obvious far reaching social and political impact. 21. the 2000 senate was 50-50. Indeed Repub's were simply defined as majority due to Cheney's tie breaking vote. Majority leader was Lott. Cheers, T ******************************************************************* Fear causes hesitation, and hesitation will cause your worst fears to come true
  22. Adam must have been extremly busy - estimates about the number of species go anywhere between 5 and 50 million these days, and something over 1.5 million have been successfully named by scientists. (most are insects) Even if you take the lowest of these numbers, give Adam 50 years, and about 8 hours sleep a day he would have had to name a species about every 11 minutes and 40 seconds. What bugs me most - why did the block head not write this stuff down. That would have saved generations of unnumbered taxanomists a lot of work. 25. The Bible isn't a science book. That's not its purpose. However, scientific ideas are present in the Bible: you forgot to make the connection between the Apocalypse and 4+7 dimensional string theory. You need to read the scripture very closely and attentively, but it is defnitely hidden in there.
