Once again proving the inadequacy of the metric system!
crwtom replied to quade's topic in Speakers Corner
This doesn't have much to do with the unti system since you're not relating units but just expressing one of them in fractions. (You may as well also measure in 3/16 cm if you wish) Plus the fractional notation is an advantage only of the denominators are what you use in applications - tha is half points, quarter points, etc. If you'd have to divide distances in 3rds and 5ths you'd have a relatively straight forward calculation in decimal numbers in the decimal system - but you'd really have to remember your fractions from high school if you need to do this in the fractional (base=2) system (which is a problem with many college freshmen I teach). Another one on conversion of units within a system. Who can tell me how many inches are in a mile without looking stuff up or using paper/calculators. This is a much easier exercise if you ask how many cm's are in a km. Once again proving the inadequacy of the metric system!
crwtom replied to quade's topic in Speakers Corner
when I first moved to the US many years ago I really made an effort to learn the local system. My favorite was to go to the meat section of the supermarket and ask for 7 ounces of some cold cuts. Most of the time the sales person would involve the supervisor and sometimes even more collegues in the calculation. On another occasion the sales person took a long effort to measure exactly 0.07 Pounds on his digital scale. (which was about half a slice) I was so flabbergasted I didn't even protest Cheers, T ******************************************************************* Fear causes hesitation, and hesitation will cause your worst fears to come true -

I'm not a historian on this - as far as I understand this there have certainly been disruptions within the Palestinian movements. However, this is of a more fundamental nature. In decades befoe it was about various rivaleries within the PLO, and mostly about pro or con Arafat fights. Mostly these were splinter groups that thought Arafat was not radical enough. By and large though all them were based on a secular socialist philosophy, with varaitions only how much "revolution" and militant "struggle" they want to engage in. In fact, becasue of its secularism, PLO isn't rellay the darling of the islamic world that you'd think it should be. Hamas is religious mostivatred and thus a totally different animal. The first thing they did when they took over Gaza was to proclaim a an islamic state. The current split is between groups of fundamentally different philosophies rather than spliterings from the same types of organizations. In addition this conflict is now also manifestly territorial, which PLO infights haven't really been. Take whatever defintiion of the status of the terrirories predominantly inhabited by people identifying themselves as Paletinians you want - whether they are states, territories, semi-autonomous regions, refugee camps or whatever is not the point of the poll. Whether they stay united ot not is. Hope that helps, T ******************************************************************* Fear causes hesitation, and hesitation will cause your worst fears to come true

Hamas has taken over Gaza - Fatah is likely to crack down on Hamas in the West Bank in retaliation after Abbas already fired the PM. The geographical separation, and political as well as military hostility make a desintegration of Palestine into two even smaller states look more likely than ever. For Israel it's even better than "divide and conquer" - the dividing is done for them. Will Fatah and Hamas eventually get themselves together to have a stronger position vs Israel, or will they follow the same trend of hatred and deintegration for which Iraq is already setting an example. Given that Palestine/Israel conflict has been the greatest source of animosity between the arab and western world throughout the last half century today's events seem pretty significant. There's been some buzz recently about an Independent Bloomberg/Hagel Ticket Bloomberg has the money, executive experience, and home popularity , and Hagel is the long time DC insider, mid west roots, and war hero. A centrist agenda might sound quite attractive to many people who are tired of ideology and polarization. Where do you think they would place, in case they decide to run? Similar Case from 2005 Similar Case from 2003 The vegan diet is hardly any issue or excuse - particularly since a 6 week everything should be breastmilk or, if you cannot, there are vegan infant formula available. There is plenty of information out there or there etc. In any case, if your baby is in a shape where you can count the bones (what ever the causes) and you don't do anything about it you are criminally negligent at the very least. Do You Really Want to Reduce the Price of Gas in the US?
crwtom replied to Gawain's topic in Speakers Corner
If you would be so kind as to take the first step...stop jumping. For your part, no more fuel burnt for shits and giggles. Do that, and maybe people will take your drivel seriously. I already did - so take it seriously. (BTW there are many jumper in Europe who do survive and jump at those fuel prices) ******************************************************************* Fear causes hesitation, and hesitation will cause your worst fears to come true -
Do You Really Want to Reduce the Price of Gas in the US?
crwtom replied to Gawain's topic in Speakers Corner
yup - European prices are around $7 per gallon right now. Not much sympathy for the whining around here in the US. An additional 100% tax on the current US prices seems to be the only thing around here that would get people to finally think seriously about conserving energy ... The Nazi's and WWII would have been prevented by more gun ownership in 1930 Germany??? This is really comical - I'd strongly recommend reading up on the many forces and the process by which the Nazi's came into power - this was far from a coup out of the blue against a resistant population. It's absurd to think the gun laws were significant factor compared to the many other such as Versailles and WW I, political apathy caused by a dysfunctional government and democratic inexperience, world economic crisis, radicalization by communist and respective reaction, etc, etc. FWIW the Nazi's were the ones liberalizing the strict Weimar Republic gun laws in `38. In `33 the only thing most ordinary German citizens thought of HItler was that he was just another chancellor in the Weimar merry go around who will disappear like all the other in a few months. By `38 it was much clearer what this guy was about, and the availablity of guns didn't change anything. Today Germany has still much stricter gun laws for the last 60 years and is far from slipping into totalitarism these days. If anything the US has currently the more disturbing record or concentration and abuse of executive power. (and no one is even thinking about picking up their arms against the govt) Germany also has half the per capita murder rate of the US - and if you look at gun related homicides the ration the US rate is 10 to 20 times higher than that in Germany. The demography is many ways similar to that of the US - a mix of prosperity and troubled populations groups, among them poor and high unemployment regions in some former east germans states where violent radicals are making the news, large immigration from mide-eastern countires with very different cultures and their own fights, as well as crimila gangs coming in from eastern european countries. I have no doubt that if "liberate" gun laws in Germany now and cause a proliferation of gun ownership and circulation the murder rates in Germany will escalate - they might even reach those in the US ... Should people who are diagnosed as suicidal be allowed to buy guns?
crwtom replied to likearock's topic in Speakers Corner
I'll take exception to your assessment of #4's impact on others - but your general point is right on IMO my bad - didn't read closely enough. FWIW, though, knowlingly exposing other people to HIV is often also considered criminal even if no infection results. Don't care to much about the question (and didn't vote) - I just ticked off by the analogies of gun rights with freedom of making personal choices that affect only the one making the choices. In a nut shell: You have every right to do to yourself whatever you want to - you have no right whatsoever to put other people in harms way. Should people who are diagnosed as suicidal be allowed to buy guns?
crwtom replied to likearock's topic in Speakers Corner
In points 1,2,4 the person making the choice would hurt only him/herself - if guns were suicide machines killing only the operators this would be an OK comparison. They are however desiogned to kill people other than the operator. Well, you had better complain to God the Creator. Cain murdered Abel at the get go. We couldnt get 4 people on the earth before we started murdering each other. If you are an evolutionist, we need to ban rocks because there was a rash of Cavemen Murders in the Paleocavelithic era. Murder - So easy a caveman could do it. Dont blame spears, rocks, guns, knives. If someone wants to kill someone, they will find a way. carry a bag of stone across a campus without anyone noticing, execute most in a class room so quickly and easly about noone can move or utter even a scream before they drop dead, and do that without any prior practice. Quite a talent in stone throwing I would say. From the article: Rebecca — who had been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity and bipolar disorder, or what used to be called manic depression — died Dec. 13 of an overdose of prescribed drugs, and her parents have been arrested on murder charges, accused of intentionally overmedicating their daughter to keep her quiet and out of their hair. should this be "piss-poor" or "impossible". Predicting with reasonable certainty whether someone will eventually do something stupid or unlawful who may seem sane and decent at some point sounds a bit like science fiction - the fantasy that "Minority Report" was made of.
