In his younger days, he was an athlete among other things. He probably would have been a skydiver if anyone suggested he try it. All of those robes would have made a good wing suit too. Just kidding about the wing suit ... I'm Catholic and admired the guy alot. One time I got to sit in the very same chair he used when he was in Denver for World Youth Day. I just got started making a few good pronouncements when I was asked to leave.

Don't know if this is true but, someone once told me that the lenses in your eyes actually see things upside-down ... and that your brain turns the image around. So, John, maybe the picture isn't upside down ... YOU are!
-
Maybe the North Pole is on the left, and the South Pole is on the right, and the earth is rotating vertically from bottom to top.

From an outer space perspective, is Australia really down under, or are WE the ones upside-down? (Picture attached) And, if you jump down-under, do you fall "up"? More thoughts about Kangaroo Land

What do you think? Is this picture real, or created by photoshop?

Sarah: Don't know if this will help in your studies, but if you go to www.dickmcmahon.com then click on the "Being a Monkey" section ... on the last page are some thoughts about free-will which maybe you can use.

In suburban London this time of year, the birds are very loud in the morning. People refer to it as the “morning chorus”. Buried within the sounds you can hear a “cuckoo” every now and then, which leads me to believe that’s how they know what time it is to start the concert. They have cuckoo clocks!

This is a website that plays 20 Questions. All you have to do is think of something, then tell the computer if it's "animal, mineral, or vegetable". If you WIN the game, the system will want to know what it was you were thinking of for future reference. It also has an attitude, I think, by arguing with you over some of your answers. For example, I was thinking "parachute", and it didn't like the fact that I said it could be used at night. Have fun. Here's the site http://y.20q.net If I didn't set up this link right, I'll re-post.

Good question, never thought of that. Man ... you just blew away my faith! Maybe we should tell the cashier that the car behind us is paying for OUR meal ... then drive away FAST!
-
Next time you're in the drive-thru at McDonald's, ask the cashier how much the order is for the car behind you. If you can afford it, pay for their meal and tell the cashier not to tell 'em until you drive away.

Mark: For what it's worth, here's a picture taken from the air the day of the attack. Sorry, I forgot where this came from so I can't give proper credit to the source. Dick

In case anyone is interested ... there's a special on the DISCOVERY channel this Sunday 9pm-11pm about Aron Ralston. He's the Colorado guy who had to cut off part of his arm after a heavy boulder fell on him in an isolated canyon. He also talks about the experience in a book called "Between a Rock and a Hardplace". Aron is a nice guy (and a crazy adventurer), and I'm surprised he never took up skydiving.

No it doesn't it is niether of the two. The horizon does not change, the Earth rotates TO SQUEAK: You're absolutely right! Since you're a knowledgable Australian, tell me this ... is Australia really "down-under", or are we in the U.S. the ones who are upside down? When I jumped in Brisbane, they said I'd be falling "up"!
-
During Oprah's show I thought he said BOTH chutes failed on his tandem jump. If that's true, why is he still alive?

Lisa: When my wife and I came back from Australia last year, we got back 7-hours before we left. Also, here's a thought ... do you realize the sun doesn't set? What is really happening is that the western horizon rises!
-
Thanks Justine. For what it's worth, here's the color version.
-
Actually, I've never done a naked jump yet. I just put this picture together using PhotoShop to show people when and IF I ever really do one. I need to get a life.
-
Did you get a lot of skydiving done in Australia? When I was there last year, the guys at the Brisbane dropzone said I'd be falling "up" being on the underside of the world ... but it didn't feel any different to me. Have a good trip back to the U.S.

Safe trip back, Sangiro! Dick

When I'm sleeping on business trips, etc., I usually cuddle-up to my suitcase since my wife is not there to cuddle. The suitcase doesn't feel as good, of course, but if you wrap a blanket around it it helps. The danger in sleeping with a parachute rig is that you may go for your reserve in a scary nightmare.

Stop by Eugene Skydivers on your way back ... a friendly place where I usually go. You wouldn't happen to be passing through Coos Bay on your way back, would you? P.S. The best bookstore is Tattered Cover in Denver

I know what you mean. If you sit close enough to the TV, and turn up the sound ... you can pretend it's an IMAX experience. The best match of music & video starts with the release of the da Vinci parachute from the hot air balloon ... then to the end of the film.
