Mine are very simple: 1) If you shoot it, you eat it AND 2) You do not shoot unless you have 100% clean kill Cheers: JL

The thread on freedom seems to be turning into tug of war on hunting ethics. So rather than continuing the discussion there I open this thread. Please tell your opinion of hunting in general and shooting ethics in particular. The season is starting and it would be interesting to hear your opinions. Cheers: JL

Hi Amazon You just don't seem to get it. Shooting something running at 300 yards is very unethical. If you are the crack shot / the white hunter you claim to be and intentionally had a head shot at that distance, that is borderline criminal, because you should know better than that. and finally If you did shoot into running heard... as far as I am concerned your guns should be confiscated. As far as Finnish participation to international aid, peace keeping or the situation of Same people, it would help, if you would check the facts before flaming away. The ignorance would not be so apparent. Cheers: JL

My prayers to the family and friends of James. My special respect to Heather, who during the middle of crises was capable of providing thoughtful and precise information of the unfortunate incident. Despite of your fears and sorrow you have supplied the community with reports, that just might prevent someone taking the risks, that caused this young man his life. For all of you, once more, my sympathy and prayers. Kindly: JL

LOL, where was she registered. That toe is one knife away from amputating bro. and I would probably let it go in order to avoid bone infection. So seeing doctor sometime soon does not quite cut it....... well... he might.

Sure we must work. No doubt about it. It is just that sometimes we get fixated by the idea and loose the perspective of real life... me included. There was this locally well known finnish carricatyrist who defined the situation very well long time ago. He stated that roughly 100 years ago we lived in small huts hunting and fishing for subsistence... whereby now we work our arses off during the weeks... so that during the weekends we can go to these litle huts and hunt and fish for subsistence. I think it pretty much rounds it up. Crazy world, crazy me. cheers: JL

Chicken feet are kind of nice though, unusual but rather tasty. Now how about kimchi. There must be a number of ex Korean hands around. I was first introduced to it in mid 80s. I was a member in Scandinavian marine delegation to South Korea and according to Korean fashion we were taken very well care off. We were visiting various yards and production plants around the peninsula, but apparently there was a bit of coordination mishap as far as the lunches went. Every place we visited served kimchi with something nice like dog meet. Kimchi is a national dish and a bit like sourkrout. However, the fermenting process is started in various ways, including placement of row crabs into the basic ingredients. Now when the crabs start going sour.. the fermentation process gets underway.Resulting taste and smell are interesting... to put it lightly. There was this skinny swedish nerd with our group. He had struggled with the food the entire trip, having had horrible fights with chopstics etc. I always remember this chap on day five, having a look at his plate and mumbling.... no... no.... more of this cat shit.... and there was only one week more to go. Well, having told the above, I must say that Korean cuisine in general is beautiful. It is just the multiple variations of kimchi that are served with everything that now and then get the traveler. Bon apetit: JL

Lets go.... Lets form a coalition. Andorra, Cameroun and Lichestein... line up your braves. Amazon, bring your Magnum. Its gonna be a real party. 300 yard running head shots on real creeps. Retired generals be prepared to act on CNN's call to duty. -
I see that the discussion continued beyond the hours I stayed at the ships bridge so I will comment few of your statements. 'Freedom of women in native societies': Generally the societies are either patriarchal or matriarchal due to the necessity of leadership that is essential for the survival of the family or the group. It does not have anything to do with definition of freedom. It is question of survival tradition. 'Missionaries in Tonga': Objective observers, jippididoo. They should have stayed out of there in the first place. "Right to bear arms": You sound like NRA poster. I am all for individuals right to bear arms.... but as of considering that that is something that keeps the Government on line.... hey time for a wake up call. "Fancy northern hunting club with no women etc.." Well as I mentioned earlier we do not hunt in clubs. But in the hunting groups there is maybe 20% female shooters and I would estimate 40% participation when discussing of the entire group. "300 yard running head shot" Well now... I thought of letting the matter rest but as you constantly bring it up I once more point out that in the unlikely situation that it has ever happened it is extremely bad manners.... which if you have anything to do with hunting rather than sport shooting.... you should know. Finally: As for the freedom It is as seen by the idividual. As seen by me.... there is very little of it left in so called modern societies, whether in USA or in Europa. AND BECAUSE OF THE AFOREMENTIONED WE DO NOT HAVE ANY BUSINESS RUNNING AROUND THE WORLD LIBERATING PEOPLE ON PRETEX OF FREEDOM. IT IS OUR SUBJECTIVE FREEDOM, THEY ARE ENTITLED TO THEIRS. Kindly: JL

Dear Amazon, lets take it point by point. 1) In my native country we do not hunt in clubs, nor do we hunt for "sport" as done in some parts of Europe. Most often our hunting is done in small groups of people, family members or othervise closely associated and it is always done for the meat and still very often for subsistence. In my own house the game and fish covers more than 70% my family's yearly consumption of meets. Not because of necessity, but because of will. Based to above I have a very high respect on nature and wild life, and extreame low tolerance on "sport" hunting, not to even mention catch an release fishing. As for your 300 yard shot, so be it, was not at my nick of neigbouhood. Definitely something we do not do, nor do we wish anybody else will. 2) Freedom... you found my old post and I am 100% behind it. On that level I found USA depressing, no ifs or buts about it. On the other hand when referring to outdoor activities, most of Europe is worse than US, and even Finland and Norway are going down the gutters. Sign of the times I guess. So do not feel sorry, You are not alone, or rather, feel sorry for all of us. 3) As of my opinion of US in general, it is very positive, Its just that occasionally you guys are so overbearing that it's time to stop and think. You have a great country and it's achievements are undisputable.... unfortunately there is always a cost to pay. Finally: In my line of work I have spent extensive times with various natives round the world and they have been the most rewarding times of my work. There I have seen real freedom, but the fact that I have seen it, means that the clock is ticking also for these free spirits. Freedom? No More. Kindly: JL

Well MAGNUM-bitch, now hear a word of experience and wisdom: YOU SHOULD NEVER AIM A ELK ON HEAD FAR LESS MENTION HITTING ONE SO. YOU MIGHT JUST MAIM THE POOR BEAST. SHAME SHAME SHAME. WHAT YOU JUST BOASTED ABOUT WOULD BE ENOUGH TO GET YOUR ASS KICKED OUT OF ANY NORTHERN HUNTING PARTY. Freedom is not shooting the elks in head. Shooting elks in head might seriously restrict your hunting rights and be dangerous to your butt. cheers: JL P.s. Running moose/elk should not be shot at distances longer than 120 yards. having a head hit at the run is a result of too much advance... not a result of good aim. 300 yards... yea... and then you woke up and let the cat take a piss.

I am in no position to comment on technicalities related to skydiving. However I find your attitude amusing considering the advice you have just received. I hope your sense of humor just momentarily took over from your common sense. Cheers: JL

I work my ass off, but do not make a number of it, nor about the money I might/might not be making. By having to work my ass off I have compromised my freedom.... by freedom of choice.... but compromised all the same. Anarchist.... now that would be interesting to define. I guess I am to certain point... not willing knowingly to hurt anyone... but still considering that the modern human society is the cancer of the earth. Anybody willing to carry it's flag under the freedom banner is either stupid, ignorant or most likely both. As for your pea shooter self constrain is strongly recommended. Buy a real gun before aiming for anybody or you might get hurt. cheers: JL

I have just been waiting to see it happen, usually it is smooth and done in no time.

F@ck the European Union, only good thing about it is, that it is easy to hate because the french live there ( and this has nothing to do with Iraq). As for US, it is definitely a democracy is decay, as are the ones in the so called old world. Making loads of money does not have a monkey shit to do with freedom, maybe U figure it out one day. As for comparing the money making in US and former soviet union, I fully agree... maybe even the means are/were the same. In general, I am of the opinion, that modern man does not have any freedom left and so we should not fly flags for being beacons of the free world. We are either slaves for tyrants or slaves of money and society. Even the freedom of oceans is no more: JL
-
So true. I think that we are faced with the problem that is evident in every mature democracy: Rather than government serving the people, it is people serving the government. Rather than laws protecting people it is people protecting the law. So where is this new born democracy with pristine forests and virgin waters. My home country used to be one.... years and years ago.... but is no longer. Our freedom was sacrificed on the altar off European unity... whatever that is supposed to mean. (actually it means that my tax money is paying for the cleanup of former soviet back yard) The closest I ever came to freedom was at Tonga years ago. At those days they had one prisoner suffering penalty for murder, and his isolation was ensured by letting him live alone on his own island. Well... it was too hot in Tonga anyway. Cheers: JL ps. With regard to the gear, U know how to catch me.

In wider scale I agree. What you said covers a big part of it and I think it is very well defined in US constitution. At the same token though your answer is very work oriented. In your rather short comment you have five words referring to work, namingly: labor, business, prosper, labor law and slave labor. But how about individual freedom. I think that in US the freedom of ownership is trespassing to the everyman's rights zone and the big brother is so eager in protecting the rights of individual, that he is actually nullifying a lot of them.
-
In recent "what makes you proud of USA thread" a common answer was freedom. However, it was seldomly defined. SO HOW DO YOU DEFINE FREEDOM?
-
And then we have this thread "Have you ever been injured while skydiving", showing that roughly 50% of us haven't suffered more than a scratch? The true figures would be interesting to know.

In many of the Pacific Islands, not eating is also considered an offense. Long time ago we were with a research ship down at the regions of Papua New Guinea and called in to this small lagoon. We were invited by village chief for traditional meal and the captain, that had a very weak stomach was seated alongside the chief. We had beautiful dinner of fish, and naturally the chief and the captain were served the best parts, which in this case amounted to fish heads served on palm leaves. The fish was accompanied by communal serving of this lightly intoxicating brew, that the local ladies did by chewing a root and spitting the result into fermenting bowl. No offense made, captain ate what was served, but was rather shallow in complexion for the remaining part of the night. There was this other time I was in a rural village someplace close to main Island of Fizi. We had a pork roast during the evening and everyone was eating with these beautifully carved wooden forks that had four spikes. I was given one as a present. A day later we called into the main Island and I took shore leave to do some snooping around, arriving to local tourist souvenir store. Those same king of forks were sold there as traditional cannibal forks..... I was happy I had seen the pig we ate the previous night.... it was not a long one. hohoho and sailor's life: JL

What is the most unusual food you ever had and where did you have it? For me it was bat soup (cooked alive) at Saipan in Northern Marianas. .... Well lets see this one turning into sex and sodomy

Now with all the folks quitting the game, there must be a big hulk of a man somewhere ready to sell his sky barge ( around 280 ft) + odds and ends. Give me a PM and we deal.
