Should the elderly be required to take yearly driving test?
w4p2 replied to AggieDave's topic in The Bonfire
Yeas, no doubt about it. I have two examples: Last time I was ashore I visited this small fishing village (on an island) with very narrow roads. I was warned about a slowly moving car, that would have white sticks poking out of driver and passenger windows. The explanation was that a pair of very old brothers lived in the village. Their vision was so poor that they were using the white stick when walking, but because their knees were also weak, they were still using a car to drive around the village and were using the white sticks to keep on the road. An other one was my grandfather. His driving became rather erratic with age and we started wondering about his aey sight. Our doubts were confirmed, when one day he was driving around my cousin, who stated asking him if he sees the traffic signs. Yeas he answered, no problem. Then he was asked what is that sign... and the answer was : Slow down, danger ahead... and the explanation was same for every sign on the road. Needless to say, that was his last drive. So.... checks strongly recommended. Cheers: JL -

QUOTE: I'm asking how when Bush displays a reality distortion field of that magnitude, how come he isn't being called upon it? I mean, read the quote! Look at the video (right near the end)! How can this be explained other than Bush has lost it? __________________________________________________ That is also my question. And when combined with ongoing crises in North Korea, it becomes really serious. A matter of vendetta is one thing.... potential for nuclear exchange is something else. I am not a big fan of Mr.Blair, but at least he has maintained his rationality and is debating the matter with more elegance and reality than Mr. Bush. I think that is one of the main reasons UK has not faced international bashing to the extent that US has.
-
Those few points are just one more indication that Bush has lost his touch with reality and history. I give full credit of the current policy drift between the world and US to this single individual. The debate is less about the jurisdiction of the actions, than on pretex and banners under which the actions were undertaken. It is also very much about the treatment of prisoners. To alter a well known quote slightly, I would say, that it is seldom that actions on so few, have altered the opinions of so many. UK is not being bashed around on its actions on Iraq, why? I think it is to be credited to Mr. Blair and his reasonable presentation and argumentation over the issues. No religion needed. The ones that saw his performance is US Congress today know what I mean. The best thing Mr.Bush can do to his country and world in crises is to turn in his letter of resignition. Maybe it is time to demand it.

[:)] New skills / What you would like to learn how to do...
w4p2 replied to airann's topic in The Bonfire
I would like to learn how to fart the national anthem of North Korea -
And what would be the point. If the objective is learning, I can hardly see it effectively completed in a rush.... I would not consider it my moneys worth.

Gruanada, Panama, Somalia, Bosnia or Iran hardly qualify as major crises. Korea could have been, but was defuced by swift show of force. Vietnam.... unfortunate... but hardly on world scale But Cold War, it was kept in bay by leadership... a task this current excuse for your president could hardly have handled.

This thing is starting to cook, super, and tx for all
-
Well I think that it is the real issue. Every US president since WWII prior to him has been able defuse the major crises in making. He seems to be making the crises. It is amazing to observe it. He has an anti Midas touch... everything he sticks his finger into turns to shit. It is even more amazing if you think the administration in general. They are professional and highly established people... I feel sorry in seeing their records being tarnished by belonging to this administration. Diplomacy should prevail. In quiet... not in international media reporting this or that leader being called evil. If diplomacy fails, and the situation calls, it is time for decisive swift military action rather making oneself a laughingstock of the world by arranging these Uzbekistan/ Camerun you name what coalitions. Was there an outcry When Israel took out the Iraqi reactors in the 80s. Not that I remember. It was understood as survival. With his unbalanced ( to put it kindly) statements and actions this gentleman has put US foreign policy into all time credibility low. As far as I am concerned the only way out before major crisis is a change of leadership.

Gentleman, lets go to core of the matters.... I think you are beating around the Bush,

AMAZON: I do not now where you get your 50 yards from, but so kindly point to my post talking about one in order to refresh my memory. Also I do not recall saying I dislike your country. Frequently and in many posts just the opposite. However, that does not mean that I have to approve or like everything. So once again, please point out the post where general dislike is stated. With reference to use of ruger, you can call it as you wish, I actually call it "poaching" as well. What it really is, is survival. If I am in the middle of nowhere and everything else fails, it guarantees my meal... and I do not consider that as a crime as long as done outside of the nesting season. So maybe it would be more proper to call it my backpack survival tool. STEVE 1 Bow hunting is the real thing. However, back north it is restricted only to birds and rabbits, which I hope will change some day. AND FINALLY: Limitations on cross bow I do not understand. Accepting cross bow during the black powder or general season would for me appear justified. Kind reg: JL

A few more days and it will be boating, hunting and skydiving for 6 weeks, meaning; that most of the time I will prepare food out either on BBQ or on open fire. For BBQ I ask your favorite recipe, I have few; but new and unusual ones would be nice to have. I will be cooking for gangs ranging from 2 to 15. As my own input I pass you the following, which is both simple and good variant of Brazilian BBQ: This can be done on open fire as well as on coals or BBQ. 1. A big chunk of good tender red meet (can also be game) is cut into three pieces and pieces are placed into rough salt for 20 min to 30 min. 2. Pieces are removed from the salt and excess salt is brushed away. 3. Pieces are placed on BBQ or on sticks facing the open fire but they are not rotated or moved. When the end of the meet facing the heat is done, you serve by cutting choice pieces (rare, medium or well done) and then you place the meet back to the heat the way it originally was. COMMENT: Sounds simple, but most good things are. The beauty of this arrangement is, that everyone gets his/hers meet just the way they like, The amount on one serving is not huge at one instant. The BBQ as a meal and social gathering can continue long long time. ENJOY: JL

All I can say is that I pray because of your president almost every day.... well, at least now and then...

That's rat hat all right. Yeas I am, did it five years professionally, then 10 years with atmospheric units like Mantis, Duplus, Perry vehicles etc.. and ended up at the bridge of dive ships like Rockwater 1, Witch Queen, Stefaniturm, Aquamarine, Stena Constructor, Fennica, Nordica and a mile long list of others. For past few years I have been with Seaway Condor, a Stolt vessel working in deep water intervention to 3000m With two SCV-3000 units. You find more details on Stolt Offshore home pages if you want. Still do work dives during my time of with both diving gear and atmospheric units, but mainly just to keep the licensees valid. Dive safe bro, both up and deep down: JL

Now Powell is a person I admire. Maybe we are lucky to see him as president one day.

On that instance I would have to part with my "if you shoot it, you eat it policy" Or on the other hand It could be interesting in the "odd foods" thread. Now thinking the matter more closely, my "if you shoot it you eat it" policy could be adapted on wider use for bringing the end to the wars or if not, at least to hunger. Well well well... these just might be the founding moments of international Kill It Eat It Society for Eternal Peace. Now who would like to be a general in a world ruled by KIEISEP- society. Cheers: JL

But whatever happens will it be due to cool reasoning or because of extraterrestrial or divine message.
-
Negotiate as long as you can, strike is everything else fails, but due it to right reasons and after cool evaluation. War is, but one of the political means. Resorting to it means though, that the policy and political leadership has failed.
-
Combine this information with info/opinions on "good thing we invaded Iraq thread" and you see why few billion people are very concerned. I cannot but repeat that Mr. Bush is the most unstable and dangerous individual ever to have seat in White House. USA would deserve much better than this. Kindly: JL
-
The following is from AFP / Jul 15 / 9:54 AM ET " My theory is the reason we do not have policy on this and we aren't negotiating, is the president himself, Perry said. I think that he has come to the conclusion that (North Korean leader) Kim Jong II is evil and loathsome and it is immoral to negotiate with him." This was a statement of your former National Security Advisor predicting war with NK. So what do you have: A president who attacks IRAQ because God gave him the vision. AND A president that refuses to talk based to moral beliefs so strong that he is willing to risk nuclear confrontation. Honestly, get the God out of the White House. Politics and religion do not mix. Cheers: JL P.S. Vaporize NK weapons facilities with tactical nukes if your security calls for it, but do it for the right reasons. Not because your president feels morally too superior to negotiate.

Once again I left the bridge just at the time this thread became alive, so I have more than 12 hours catching up to do. Generally what I have seen, I am impressed with. It appears that the generally accepted ethics and methods are pretty much the same, weather in US or north Europe. Later on in this post I will bring up the subjects of silencer use, hand gun hunting and bow hunting with cross bows. However, before that I will answer my favorite DD sharp shooter Same-specialist nemesis, AMAZON regarding some of my the gear: Amazon: With regard to the gear I just checked my wallet and found that I have the license with me, I am not very good at throwing names but as I have them in front of me here we go, you asked for it: (statement in brackets my own clarification of use). Rifles: SAKO TRG 30-06 / sniper with ZEIS variable. ( with flame suppressor or silencer and bipod. Stainless steel over vinyl stock, Used for long range shooting of canadian goose, eider, sea and forrest goose and very seldom for moose and deer) SAKO Finnfire 22 / ZEIS variable + silencer (my favorite gun for eider, duck, mallard pidgeon etc. I use it and I am invisible) SIG/SAUER 2x twelve gauge over single 222 Drilling with Zeis variable. (seldom used, too expensive to crawl around with) Valmet 212 base with number of exchange over & under barrels and optics for anything between big game and goose.) Shotguns: Remington SP-10 ( 10 gauge magnum, my all around shotgun of choise) Remington 870, 12 gauge, various barrels ( my light brush shotgun) Valmet Leijona 12 gauge over & under (general purpose) Handguns: Ruger KMK 678 heavy barrel / stainless with aimpoint and silencer ( My back pack poacher, used when out at the islands out of season to nick of a meal now and then) Taurus 357 mag with scope (just had to have it) Colt 1911 / 45, Norinco 45, Glock 9 mm etc... used for practical competitions before it became a rambo game. There are somewhat over 40 guns on my license but I just took a pick on my favorites. Without bragging on my capabilities lets put it this way: I have been shooting / hunting over 40 years and there was a time in my life when I was doing it on professional basis.... AND WITH THIS BACKGROUND I AM FLAMING YOU AND YOUR 300 YARD RUNNING HEAD SHOTS AS UNETHICAL BS. Matter closed on my behalf. Now that I have got that one out of my system, to the real topics: 1) Use of silencer: Became legal in Finland roughly 10 years ago.... superb and recommended. Reduced the environmental noise impact to 0 and for instance in my case resulted to almost exclusive 22/rifle hunting of small game. Still illegal in US I think? 2) I do not know how it is now, but last time I was bow hunting in USA the use of cross bow was illegal (Louisiana 2000). In Scandinavia as well. I find it strange... because should I have a choice... stalking big game with CB would be my preferred hunting method. Experiences / opinions? 3) Hand gun hunting, illegal in Scandinavia for reason beyond my understanding. Would be excellent for stalking dear & moose in brush. Experiences? Well thats it for time being. Looking forward to your comments. Cheers JL

Amazon: I will only continue discussions regarding hunting ethics on that specific thread. As for Finnish UN activities or foreign aid, I propose you to check the appropriate UN and Finnish government pages. I doubt that you do it, far less post your findings because the posted facts would just simply manifest your ignorance. It is enlightening to have a Seatle based Same specialist on this thread. I only spend average 2 months per year in Lapland, so I find my self not qualified to speak on their behalf, and I am simply humbled facing your knowledge. I was actually thinking of contacting one of my friends in Inari to participate to this discussion, but thought the better of it, because I am sure you would have the arrogance to argue over their situation with their own representative. SMILES: Your definition of freedom was beautiful. Left very little to be added.

LOL, Just did, hope that this one returns into the original topic. Cheers: JL
