  1. I've PMed seperately, but basically AFF can be a bit of rocky road sometimes, but its worth sticking through it. Staying current definitely helps as well though. Thats a good point, although how does that fit in with Hop 'n Pops (not a critism of the reasoning, but a curious newbie question)? I do agree that SL would not be the way to go though!
  2. You could try Thomas Sports (http://www.thomas-sports.com), they carry accessories such as ripcords.
  3. Theres also a fair bit of information, including other unplanned freefalls, at this site, which might be of help: http://www.greenharbor.com/fffolder/ffresearch.html
  4. It was inappropriate in the context of a fatality thread in the Incidents forum, and you were quite correctly informed of this. What is out of order, is this thread - which you could have made purely about journalistic ethics, but is really a thinly-veiled personal attack.
  5. I think I'll record it, that way I can skip straight to the skydiving. [Edit]Assuming it doesn't get pulled of course...[/Edit]
  6. You mean, its early and your pretending to be working while browsing the forums?
  7. Oh gods, I saw that film a few days ago. One of my mates, having picked up that I had started partaking in this sport (I can't imagine how? ), decided that it might be a good film to watch. The worst part was when it finished, and he couldn't understand why I thought it was so shit! Some educating required...
  8. My first jump was an AFF, and I have no regrets about that at all! If you are doing this because you want to get into the sport, then it is a good way to get started. Plus, you save the money you would have spent on the tandem! First of all, you will have around 6 hours of fairly intensive training, and when you actually jump it will be with two highly qualified instructors who know how to save your ass in just about any situation. Its about as safe as you can get in skydiving! Very much so. Why else would you want to chuck yourself out a plane? You have to try really hard to screw up a level 1 jump, so its not worth getting concerned about failing it. Good luck with the jump!
  9. Wasn't it just. I watched it last night after getting back from the DZ, part of me wishes I hadn't bothered. I was disappointed that they cut most of the skydives out though, since that was the whole point of the show! It will be interesting to see if there is an increase in tandems on the back of this or not...but it is the best publicity the sport is going to get in terms of the mainstream public this year so it can't be all bad!

    mp3. ILLEGAL?

MP3s are not illegal - MP3 is simply an encoding format for audio files. Downloading copyrighted material without permission has always been illegal, and this applies whether it be MP3/WAV/Ogg Vorbis etc. However, a lot of people (the music industry included) blur the line between the two.
  11. Cool, but almost totally useless, is the Doom port to Windows CE. http://www.jimmysoftware.com/Software/Doom4CE/.
  12. I read the book years ago, when I was a kid (my parents had bought it, although not from a skydiving perspective). I went out and bought it again a few weeks ago after my first jump, and it gave a different perspective on the story. I particularly like the fact that the student is called Fletcher Seagull, as that happens to be my surname (and yes I am currently on student status) - it just adds an extra dimension to the story that makes it a bit more individual. Its also chock-full of excellent quotes!
  13. Hi, Based on reading comments about good goggles for contact lense wearers, I nabbed my first piece of skydiving kit, a pair of Sorz goggles. The question is - should I tape over the two vent holes by the straps? The ones I've been using (a tasteful bright pink, chosen since no-one in their right mind would buy them and chosen since the DZ shop was unable to sell them) have tape over the vents to stop the wind from blowing the contacts out of the eyes. On a side note - whats the best way to clean them? Soft glasses cloth? Thanks,
  14. What a terrible excuse for a TV programme! I wonder how this will affect the public perception of skydiving over here though - its obviously equating skydiving with humiliation and punishment.
  15. Cheers, like I needed to be reminded of that first thing in the morning. Woo - I'd go for that. Or perhaps theres a money making opportunity in selling oxygen masks for the rides up?
  16. Spot on! I can exect to a small extent that pressure changes can cause people's bodies to expel gases (but seriously - if you expel some of said gas before you get on the plane there will be a lot less to come out), but it is quite obvious from this thread and general conversation on the DZ that there are a lot of people out there who find it funny to "let one off" purely to see how much they can discomfort everyone else. I don't fart in your face, why the fuck should I have to put up with you doing it to me? I'm new to the sport, and this is one aspect of it that I find deeply unpleasant and it really does spoil the ride to altitude for me. Theres no need for it, and most people don't actually find it as funny as you probably think they do. Sorry to rant, its just something that gets right up my nose (ahem).
  17. Some more research has dug up the fact that BPA rules don't let you wear a full-face until you have a B license (and even then it is at the discretion of the CCI), so that limits things slightly. I'll ask about at the DZ this weekend and see what the situation is.
  18. Hi all, Now that I'm progressing through AFF, I'm starting to think about getting my own stuff. Most of it isn't a problem at the moment since I am still paying for rig etc as part of the course, and there is a reasonable jumpsuit which fits nicely at the DZ. What is most pressing at the moment is decent head gear,, particularly since I wear contacts, so if anyone has any suggestions I would be be very grateful. Although it is early days yet, chances are that it would be mainly used for RW and freeflying. Looking at previous posts, it appears that Sorz goggles are very good for contact wearers (do they require tapeing up?). The mirror blue look nice, does anyone know if this causes any visiblity problems? On helmets, is a full-face with a visor recommended or can this cause problems? Should you wear goggles underneath this (I am guessing this is not a bad idea)? Cheers for any help/suggestions,
  19. Exactly, please let it rip before you get onto the plane. I've never been in to farting around other people, and I really don't understand why others do as it is very unpleasant. I've only been on a few loads so far, and every one has been poisoned. At least theres a window in the plane when it gets really bad.
  20. Ah - my bad, I thought it was Friday:Saturday:Sunday.
  21. At last, the weather turned and I got to do my first jump on Saturday! Woah - I don't think my brain has quite taken it in yet. Also did levels 2 and 3 on Saturday, and 4 on Sunday, so overall a great weekend and much better than I was expecting. Roll on next weekend!
  22. Yay, I can finally post to this thread. 0:3:1 Friday was too windy for student jumps. Saturday got up on the first load and did my AFF1 (first ever jump) at last! Went on and did levels 2 and 3 during the day. Sunday I did AFF4, but the weather closed in later on in the afternoon. Fantastic weekend!
  23. I feel you - I still haven't been able to do my AFF1 due to bad weather, and even this weekend's forecast isn't that great. I would echo this, last weekend we had a packing lesson, and watched a whole load of AFF videos shot by one of the instructors out in Elsinore. Hopefully it will have helped, even if its subconcious, and its a better use of time than doing nothing...
  24. These things seem to happen occasionally - I had a transaction on my Switch (debit card) that took over a month to appear. Like yourself, my first thought was fraud, but on phoning up the bank I was told this isn't too uncommon.
  25. Indeed, and you must have set this up when installing the OS/turning on the PC for the first time (if it all came pre-installed). Try your default passwords. At a worst case, you might be able to go into recovery mode (stick in your WinXP cd-rom and re-boot the PC), or to use a boot disk (if your file system is FAT32) to backup your files.
