You need a tourist visa. They last five years and cost about US$50 or so, I believe. The Brazilian consulate was very prompt when I applied for mine. You have to send your passport into the consulate and they stamp it for you and stuff. Check out the State Department's website for travel advisories. My own recommendations: - Rio is a good time. Corcovado, Pao de Acucar, and the Jardin Botanico are awesome. - Try the sucos - they are amazing. Don't get the same kinds of fruits you can get in the USA. The acai are extremely good. - Feijodas are bland, but good to try. - Caparinias (spelling) are mandatory. Don't bother calling yourself a drinker if you come back without trying one. - Brazilian BBQ's - churrascarias are AWESOME. Go hungry as hell and unleash.....you WON'T be disappointed - Don't leave the country without going down to Foz do Iguacu. Niagara is a toilet. Victoria Falls pale in comparison. These are by far and away the best waterfalls I've seen ANYWHERE. There's a kickass aviarywhere you can hold a macaw on the Brazilian side. Cross the border into Argentina for a steak and some Argentinian wine. Going into Paraguay just to be there from Foz do Iguacu is a waste of time. That country is magnificent. I heard an interesting lecture from this NASA guy yesterday on the last Hubble reservicing mission. Very cool stuff if you're a space geek like me. During the lecture he showed this cool pic. Though I'm heavily into space, it's from an engineering standpoint. I don't know much about astronomy, but everytime I see some of the pics the astronomers produce I'm amazed at the natural beauty of space. This pic looks like an eyeball out there in Star Trek-land. The power systems for both the Beagle2 and the NASA Rover '09 are pretty cool. The NASA rover is going to use a Stirling engine with two GPHBs for a heat source. DAMNED efficient - better than RTGs. They vibe tested the prototype to 12.5 g's RMS and it ran like a champ. NASA Glenn is doing most of the work on it - a team led by Jeff Schreiber. Good stuff. Beagle2 has a sweet lithium ion battery system. If we're going to keep doing these missions into deep space, power is going to be a limiting factor if we want to send data back. Lot's of neat ideas. I'm a Stirling/SCARLET/nuke proponent myself, but that's just me. Resurrect TOPAZ and make it better. I'm glad this Martin guy's sentence was reduced. The fact that he was ever jailed disgusts me. When you invade someone's home you lose all rights. I'm glad he shot the guy. IRT the Memphis guy, I hope he's charged with reckless endangerment, but not murder. I know a few security guards and the training they receive with firearms is OK, but nothing spectacular. In this case I think he was acting in anger - not out of any training he received. Security guards are trained to fire only in self defense - imagine the lawsuit potential for companies employing security personnel were that not the case. Regardless, the guy in Memphis acted stupidly. He endangered others needlessly. The perp was removed from the gene pool a tad bit early, which is normally a sad thing. Having lived in Memphis I can state with great confidence had he been arrested, he would probably be out within a month - possibly a week or earlier. I didn't know that about the man - you seem to have read more about him than I. I've never seen or read Birth of a Nation so I really can't comment on that. Even so, dude, just based on his legacy I'd put him above the two. Everything I've read about the man - which obviously isn't as much as you - tells me that he had leadership qualities that both El Jefe Clintonista and Jimmy Carter lacked. Also unlike them, he actually presided over a presidency with a legacy - bad in some cases, but a legacy nonetheless. Women's Suffrage and direct election of senators were major steps forward in my opinion. I've slammed Carter a bit, but it was under his administration that the LA class attack submarines and several other shipbuilding programs that spurred the economy and strengthened the military were authorized. I think he's a good man, but a horrid president. His accepting the Nobel was a disgrace to the nation as well, but he's no longer president. Blah blah blah....I digress. As much as racists and segregationists piss me off, it was the norm for many during Wilson's time period, even among many well educated people. Disgusting how slavery took us down that road.
