Mark you nailed it. Unions deliberately bankrupted that company. I think that unions USED to be a good thing for the nation - grandpa was a coal miner in KY. Unfortunately, they got power hungry and now cause more harm than good. Occasionally they'll do a good thing - like the flight attendants' union did to United Airlines - but for the most part they are a drain on a company and a bane to employees - especially those who do not desire to join (Right to Work Laws are sooooooo nice). Gov't unions in particular piss me the hell off - especially the NEA. I think that many unions push the 'corporations exist to give you a job' dogma, which is total BS. Corporations exist to make a profit - NOT to give folks a paycheck. That's an expenditure made in pursuit of a profit. Stranglehold is a nice little short read on some union militancy/crimes. Because I have read 1441 and other UN resolutions pertaining to the pre-invasion situation, I know this to be an incorrect statement on your part. Non-negotiable fact of life, as I stated before. It in no part means that I like the UN or believe it shoud in any way be a constraint on the conduct of US foreign policy when it comes down to it. Truth be told I despise the organization. Until you have done so, you have absolutely no basis whatsoever in proving that he was lying on the issue. None. Nada. Zilch. My dearest SkyDekker - I do apply the same standards to all. You seem to blur the lines between mistake and lie and are allowing your innate prejudices to get the better of you. President Bush made a judgement based on all of the information given to him and IF no WMD are ever found in Iraq, he made a mistake. If he were LYING, he would have had to know that there were no WMD in Iraq and deliberately stated the contrary. It amazes me how folks wanted to give these inspectors time and more time and more time to find these weapons then expect the US to find them instantly. As to the lie/mistake thing, here. I'll give you some examples. Mistake: Bush has intel stating WMD exist in Iraq, and uses that as a pretext to demand regime change in return for not providing an assbeating to the Iraqi military. If no WMD are found, he was MISTAKEN. Lie: John Ashcroft is weak on civil rights because he voted against Judge White. Mistake: Bombing the Chinese Embassy in Yugoslavia (I forget which republic) Lie: Zoe Baird's employment of an illegal immigrant years ago made her completely unqualified to be Attorney General. Mistake: Not taking the Sudanese up on their offer to deliver bin Laden's head on a silver platter. Lie: "I haven't changed my positions on one single issue..." Joe LIEbermann Mistake: Getting a blow from one of your interns. Lie: I never had sexual relations with that Lewinsky woman! I even threw in the Baird lie for the lefties out there. Nope. I'd call him the recipient of faulty intelligence. Reread what he said about reasons for regime change and some of ye olde UN resolutions (1441 is a good start, but go back a few). It would be embarassing for the US politically were that to happen, no doubt about it. If we don't find them, (which I doubt seriously) I at least hope those criticizing us will post pics of the children we released from prison, the mass graves we've uncovered, pics of some gassed Kurdish children, and perhaps a pic of the plastic shredder Qusay threw live folks into as a backdrop to put everything into perspective. Offensive? Perhaps. I don't apply that to all liberals - just to many. 'Lying liberal coward' is adjective phrase I use quite often. I truly believe that when folks lie in politics, it is usually due to either ignorance or cowardice. I refuse to believe that a congressman or senator is uninformed or ignorant, hence my application of the phrase to many. One or two lies don't earn the title - it takes several and an established pattern of what I would consider deliberate lies/distortions to sway the opinions of the masses to earn that. He's met my requirements. As a conservative quasi-libertarian, several phrases offend me, including 'sham right to work laws' straight from John Kerry's own website. 'Tax cuts for the rich' when not followed by 'who pay most of the taxes' offends me as well, but I've learned to live with it. (I'm against the structure of Bush's second tax cut and can't in good conscience support it as is, by the way) The 'weak on civil rights because he/she doesn't support affirmative action' lie/mantra really offends the hell out of me, but I've learned to blow that off as well. There are other examples, but I digress. Politics is offensive sometimes - especially when smear campaigns (Ashcroft(whom I don't like), Bork, Pickering, Fortas, Zoe Baird, et al) come into play. As long as the left continues to cower behind lies and half truths to sway the opinions of the masses, I'm going to be offended. If they're offended by me referring to them as cowards for doing so - their lies insulted my intelligence and payback's a bitch. They can deal with it. I've applied the 'lying coward' phrase to conservatives as well, by the way. Never yet to a libertarian though, even though I think them somewhat wacky at times. OK Dude. Let's put the ole brakes on here. 1) Use of a Common code of law is NOT MANDATORY for all persons residing in a nation-state? I beg to differ Buck Rogers. If you aren't going to abide by our laws GET THE HELL OUT RIGHT NOW. That is NOT an option regardless of what language you speak/don't speak. 2) The fact that we Americans have survived a lot of wars with a lot of languages is true. Comparing that experience with that of the Georgians, Kazakhs, Uzbeks, Azerbeijanis, Chechens, Serbo-Croats, et al is an INSULT to the memories of those executed under Stalin/Kruschev/Brezhnev/Dzerzhinskiiy and their cronies. There is NO comparison between the two and NO historical parallel. Nationalism in those areas of the world didn't survive because it had to - it survived because it was passed down from generation to generation and reinfoced because the occupying/repressive forces spoke a DIFFERENT LANGAUGE than that of the general populace. 3) For examples, see the above. Yugoslavia as well. German re-unification is also another great example. Wenn du Deutsch spricht, go read some of the newspapers in the Sudentenland pre-WWII. The English translations don't do it justice. LANGUAGE IS A BINDING FACTOR FOR NATION STATES and a far more powerful one than you seem to realize. 4) If you're going to be a citizen, learn the language. Push I've read a lot of your posts and usually agree with you on more than a few things. You never seem to post anything inane. We do disagree here, however. I hold that Canada's health care system is a disaster because it's socialized, not because of any linguistic abilities of any of those it supports. I passionately disagree with you when you say that the language identity thing is just an easy way for people to identify their country. It's more than that. If you can't comminicate with a group you CANNOT be a full member of that group. Though my buddy Billvon has been continuosly ignoring the many examples I present, history is REPLETE with examples of nations being destabilized and ultimately dissolved when they do not have a common, uniting language (one of the few things the Russki's did right when they had control of the USSR was to implement Russki as the lingua franca). I fervently believe that a nation cannot maintain its identity without maintaining linguistic coherency. Good luck to your grand-dad with his heart surgery.
