  1. July 9, 2003: "People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, an international animal rights groups, has filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles against KFC Corp. and parent company Yum Brands Inc. (NYSE: YUM), accusing the companies of making misleading statements about how chickens used by its fast-food restaurants are treated, according to PETA's Web site... ... Bonnie Warschauer, a spokeswoman for KFC, said in a statement that the suit is a publicity stunt "designed to mislead the public." "Our information is accurate and we're proud to be the industry leader for poultry welfare guidelines," she said. " Then today: "Yum Brands Inc.'s Louisville-based KFC division issued a statement Tuesday that called the actions of workers at one of its chicken suppliers "appalling." The statement was in response to a video released earlier in the day by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals that showed workers at a West Virginia chicken plant abusing chickens. According to a statement release by PETA, an undercover investigator who filmed the workers witnessed abuses such as employees "ripping birds' beaks off, spray painting their faces, twisting their heads off, spitting tobacco into their mouths and eyes, and breaking them in half -- all while the birds are still alive." Moronic? This was the recipient of KFC's 2004 "Supplier of the Year" Award. Many of their stunts are purely to keep the issue in the media. But they do much more than media stunts for their cause. I also do not agree with some of their views. But to single-handedly dismiss what they've done for the cause of humane treatment for animals is short-sighted. 2. Personally, I'd pay for the jump ticket just to see a few certain 'sooper-swoopers' bringing it straight in. When afore-mentioned "Tall and Mischievous" returns, I'm going to request he and his teammate, "Small, Dark and Handsome" do a student pattern 2-way straight in !! "Small and Champion-like" doesn't have his Swooo number yet and I think that's the perfect way for him to earn it - what do you think? It's still "all in fun!" 3. It also offers an answer to why I suggested it could be convenient. One perspective: It was a mistake with no motive. Leaked to the press days before the 9/11 commission report. One perspective: He was going to use the notes/reports to advance Kerry's position and was discovered. No solid conclusion yet. What was I defending "cuz I'm s'posed to"? 4. There's your problem. Their moronic exploits are what get them into mainstream news sources. Surely you know that's part of their goal. Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi
  5. I don't know. I'm not a member of PETA. peacefuljeffrey, there are radicals on both sides of any devisive issue. To exclusively speak to/refer to them is basically to have a closed mind. Even amongst PETA members, there are (mostly) those who advocate non-violent protesting/campaigning and there are those who take their beliefs further. You're holding a very small group of people as representatives of a very large organization - and an even bigger issue. Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi
  6. You didn't finish. The very next paragraphs: That latter allegation drew sharp responses from two of Berger's associates. "That is absurd," said Joe Lockhart, President Clinton's former press secretary, who is advising Berger. "And anyone who says that is interested in something other than the truth." Former White House lawyer Lanny Davis challenged any unnamed official who makes such an accusation to come forward publicly. "I suggest that person is lying," he said. "And if that person has the guts, let's see who it is who made the comment that Sandy Berger stuffed something into his socks." Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi
  7. Well, GODDAMN! You just saw the light, my friend. Isn't it disgusting that eating good, healthy food is more expensive than eating processed, crap? But, I suspect that wasn't your point. 1. What does a personal trainer have to do with what you eat? 2. Ditto with the chef? 3. The fact that you think you need a nutritionist to tell you what to eat says you're too lazy to learn - and would rather swing by your local burger joint or take something out of a box and pop it into the microwave. It's unfortunate that there is the perception that it takes so much effort to eat healthfully. Honestly, all it takes is the desire. And regarding your comment about what if? Do you honestly think being vegetarian is such a badge of honor that folks will lie about it? Then, thank you.
  8. My grandfather went to school with "Dave" from Wendy's. I went to high school with the drummer of Everclear (Greg Ecklund) and got him into his first band. 9. Andre 3000 'World's Sexiest Vegetarian' NEW YORK - The secret to Grammy-winning hip-hop? Maybe it's the veggies. Andre 3000 of OutKast has been voted the "World's Sexiest Vegetarian" in PETA's annual online poll. He shares the honor with actress Alicia Silverstone. More than 12,000 votes were cast in the annual contest run by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Results were released last week. Previous winners include Tobey Maguire, Lauren Bush and Shania Twain. Silverstone and Andre 3000 beat out other contenders not known for their eating habits: John Cleese, Prince and "Weird Al" Yankovic. Andre, 30, is the flashier side of the hip-hop duo OutKast. OutKast's hip-hoppy jive won three trophies at the 2004 Grammy Awards: best urban-alternative performance for "Hey Ya!" and best rap album and overall album of the year for "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below." It was the first rap album to win most of the awards in top categories. Silverstone, 27, has starred in films including "Clueless" and "Batman & Robin." **** Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi
  10. I also heard that you must do a straight in landing on that particular jump. The reason I mention/question it is - the crosskeys rumor mill has it that Mr. mischeivous-tall-and-cute-super-swooper didn't and yet has been granted a swooo number. Now, I'm not one to call foul - because having this little (or not so little) Loki around is worth bending the 'roooles' - and he mentioned what a great time he had on the dive... Just looking for clarification.

  14. Adam Rosen took stills (including the one above) and Jason Aubin took vid of the tracking dive led by Heath. All will be sent to you this week. Stay strong. Love and empathy - Shani PS. 15. Nicely put. (emphasis is mine) I actually disagree here. You're holding your (our) brand of 'activism' as sensible thereby calling others' non-sensible. I'm not convinced of that. If I was 100% totally sure that no change is going to happen and that we as a society will continue down the current path of insensitivity and consumption at all costs - then you better believe I'd be out chanting in the streets and begging people to open their eyes. It just so happens that I think the 'world' will come around - I have hope for that and have patience. That doesn't mean I'm more sensible - possibly just more optimistic. But someone who believes otherwise might call ME unsensible. Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi
  16. You and I seem to be on the same page regarding non-participation. If you believe, as I do, that all of life is a balance - then I have to accept the fact that that as long as there is one movement pulling radically to the right - there will always be one movement pulling to the left. Greed, so far, has won out - for obvious reasons. It's going to take alot of awareness - over a long period of time to create this particular paradigm shift. I don't advocate hurting anyone or anything. I do appreciate those who are out there creating awareness, spending their time and energy ACTING (when I mostly only eat veg and discuss my views). I know there are many ways to get a point across and many degrees of every argument. PETA gives US the opportunity to 'bond' with their meat-eating/animal testing detractors because we, too, can say we don't agree with PETA. BUT - here's what I believe... *** For Lindsey, I am sorry if what I said came out wrong or offended you. You and Soilman seem to know alot about nutrition (I'm still learning). What I really meant to get across is that meat-eaters often use the 'nutrition' argument - protein, calcium, etc - when trying to discount a purely veg diet. My point was that often they'll look so hard at the veg diet for nutritional imbalances and yet have never given a moments thought to what they themselves are eating. Or where it comes from. *** The TERROR-thing seems pure exploitation. Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi

  18. And honestly, we/you can debate the minutiae of nutrition - which, by the way, I APPLAUD!!!! But there is a very small percentage of folks who really follow nutrition that carefully - carnivores or not. For me it's an ethical dilemma. As a human being, I have resources available (beyond dr. phil's latest tripe) to create and supplement an animal-free diet. And to live MUCH more healthfully than someone who doesn't put effort or thought into their eating habits (meatless or not) and just takes what's available at the local supermarket. And trusting whatever government organization says its OK to have THIS amount of THAT and THAT amount of THIS in your food supply. (cuz THIS and THAT makes them money) I'm NOT talking about what's the BEST DIET for me to lose weight or look like a supermodel or live for 500 years. I'm talking about what's the best way to sustain our land, feed the most people, and create a food supply that doesn't etch away at our spirit and humanity and connectedness with every bite. Again, the nutrition aspect is not to be ignored - obesity is an epidemic in our "modern" greedy, consumptive culture. Whether its ethics or nutrition, if you take notice and choose to learn - you're one step further than many. **** For soilman: if PETA's actions outrage - and cause a discussion where you and I are able to say "We're vegan, although we don't agree with PETA here's why..." It's like saying "Mom, I burned down the house" - "OK, just kidding, I really just broke a door". Either way, it gets the idea out there, but allows each of us to discuss the issue on our own terms and to our own degree.
  19. In any food, because of amino acid balance and other factors, not all of the ingested protein in food is used/usable. Net protein utilization (NPU) is the percentage of ingested protein in a given food item that is actually used by the body. Most whole grains alone and most legumes alone have NPUs in the same range as meat. Here are NPU values (from Diet for a Small Planet) for some selected foods: Food / NPU most meats / 65-57% eggs / 94% milk / 82% soybeans / 61% other legumes / 50-60% brown rice / 70% And that's without the added hormones and antibiotics! source Also read Diet for a New America Action expresses priority. - Mahatma Ghandi

  23. Fine. Let's compromise. edited: Look. As anyone living in this world knows - there is the far right, the middle ground and the far left of any 'argument'. The radicals supply the ammunition to their detractors - as well as bargaining power to those in the middle with leanings to their side. As I said before, I'm not a member and do not necessarly agree with their tactics or beliefs - but I do believe the state of animal farming in this country/world is so far beyond anything I'm proud to say I partake in, and more, am ashamed to say we as humans actually do - that I appreciate their 'stunts' (aside from harming anyone) to create awareness. This isn't your great-grandfather's hog farm I'm talking about. (And my great-grandfather had one) This is the systematic torture and butchering of sentient beings for no good reason other than greed. I want... I like... not I need. I'm leaving this thread because I'm not interested in saying what's right for you. I love to talk about my beliefs with people who are interested in my perspective (not necessarily those who share my beliefs) or interested in broadening their view. And those who interested in sharing theirs with me. I have no interest in arguing. I just thought fucking with people's belief systems for fun was a negative way to spend your time and said so. 24. ...please... Torturing animals is your philosophy? I'd throw paint on you - and according to many thread on this board (man axe-ing puppy to death while son watches), so would they. The philosophy is humans are don't need meat or fur. The crime is what we subject animals to for our greed. I'm not a member - and don't always agree with their methods, but I believe they are a live and let live bunch as long as you include animals in those who are allowed to live.
