  1. in response to the comment around becoming uncurrent, I really like the idea of a Safety Day at the beginning of the season, which I know lots of DZs in the more northern parts of North America do, not sure whether it's a requirement or not - it is something I'd be interested in seeing at some UK DZs! tash edited to add: some people in the UK remain current over the cold season, others don't. I've been and seen both over the years. Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Being alive is a special occasion. Avril Sloe
  2. I travel a lot with work too and like going to new DZs, in fact I'm giving another new DZ a go this coming week-end in a different country and continent! I often find that I meet people at DZ A in one part of the world and then meet them again at DZ B many miles away - it's one of the great things about this sport. Also, I often find that I feel more at home at a new DZ than in the hotel I'm staying in while working abroad. I'll never forget the Easter I spent at Skydive Dallas completely unfit to jump, eating as much paracetamol (tylenol) as is medically advisable, sleeping a few hours in a bunk room, waking up, watching a few landings and starting again from the top. I'm sure that had I been in the hotel I'd have been miserable, as it was, I could bum around in my pyjamas get fresh air, no-one cared lots of people chatted to me and I felt a lot better within 2 days! tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. 5. I've found yahoo finance quite helpful at times and I think it was the Bank of England or Office for National Statistics which had inflation and interest downloadable in .csv format, I think unemployment was there too. They were just straightforward very long lists of rates on a monthly basis since the 1950s. House prices, try Nationwide Building society or Halifax, although they may not be downloadable just java things for you to check by how much your house has gained in value (or not!) tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. 9. In the UK an A-licence holder can jump without the supervision of an instructor. A-licence can be achieved either through AFF, which is a minimum of 18 jumps (if no re-jumps) or RAPS where there is also a minimum but I can't remember it as well as passing the written test on canopy handling (CH1). A-licence holders have a red hardbacked licence with their picture in it and the A section has a stamp, BPA embossing and the signature of the current chair of the BPA when the licence was issued. Subsequent licences (B, C & D) sections may also have been stamped, signed and embossed. More information is on the bpa website www.bpa.org.uk. If you go to the documents page amongst all the docs there is the application for an A-licence (if I click on that link I just get the document, and don't know how to post a direct link to the document). tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. 12. I haven't really got much time, so won't go through all the posts and may repeat what someone else has said. Here in the UK there are two amputees, Al & Swifty, who are the most fantastic freeflyers. Having lost a leg doesn't mean you can't jump if you want to - having met Al & Swifty I know that it's possible. I'm not sure if they post here, and can't remember if there are any articles by them here, if you go to www.bpa.org.uk and follow the link to the UK mag, I'm sure there's something they wrote in that about jumping as amputees. You'll be back in the air before you know it!! tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Being alive is a special occasion. Avril Sloe
  13. Just a warning on the 30 mins if you are novices. I decided to spend the same money on tunnel time in the winter that I spend on jumping in the summer now that airkix & bodyflight are open here in the UK. I booked 15 mins per week every week initially, which I've now reduced to 12 mins. The main reason for that is that I was unable to move my arms after 12 mins and was then wasting the other three minutes 'cos I didn't have the strength to get into a sit, let alone stay in it. You guys may be v fit and not struggle with upper body strength - I did though and even now there is no way I could do 30 mins myself unless it was spread over a long time. tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. 14. Our dz has a similar policy to the one mentioned at Weston. If I'm jump master and it's cloudy, I'll ask the pilot to radio down to find out if they can see any holes in the cloud from the ground at around 6 or 8k. If the answer is no, we stop climbing and people can choose to jump from cloud base (if it's high enough) and either way pay for a hop'n'pop as that is as far as the ride went. Like ltdiver said - you pay for the plane ride, why climb higher if you can tell there is unlikely to be any change? If the CCI calls us down for winds, we tend to get our tickets back though unless we've been warned before the jump. tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. 25. I voted yes, but it does actually depend. One of the dropzones I jump at is in the middle of a military zone, so few incursions by other aircraft - the other, I probably wouldn't. Also, if I was the jumpmaster having to make that decision I'd have been making it all the way up and possibly not even let the plane climb that high in the first place if the layer was too thick while climbing through it. A thick layer doesn't just appear once I'm at 13.5k. tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Being alive is a special occasion. Avril Sloe
