  1. It's not. Unless you count playing XBox as exercise. Getting 3-4 miles of walking in on the two days a week I have to go to the main campus but other than that... I need a new goal.
  2. Agreed. As long as they NEVER participate in the pieing of others, that is.
  3. People should bring whatever they like to drink. If you don't like what they bring, you're free to not drink it. If a person can afford to skydive, they can afford to buy their own good beer in bottles.
  4. I bet there's another dz near you that teaches by the ISP and uses two jumpmasters for the lower levels. I'd suggest heading out there this weekend and at least talking to them about what you'd need to do. Doubt you'd have to repeat the whole process. Then when you're licensed and have your own gear, go back to the first dz you jumped at and request the balance of your money in tickets.
  5. What if they don't "get" landing right away and a 1.15 wingloading is too fast for their ability? What if they only weigh 100 pounds? What if they live and jump at 5000 feet msl? A 1.15 wingloading at 25 jumps is not "sensible" - it's doable at a low field elevation for some people (with solid training and some "natural" ability) but it's not the right (read: safest) wingloading for every, or even most, freshly licensed jumper(s). It's really hard for most people to "grow into" something that they can't consistently land standing up. Many people who buy smaller gear thinking they'll "grow into" it soon find themselves selling it - whether due to injury, gear fear or just being tired of rolling around in the dirt. And most of those people don't replace it, either. All containers will accommodate a canopy one size smaller than the one they were built for. Some will safely accommodate two sizes smaller.
  6. Ah hell, there goes the neighborhood. What's next, a planet full of tuna? A big ass spectre? Clayton's mom?
  7. 6k:2:1 6k - The altitude at which my first "real" AFF student pulled. 2 jumps - an AFF Cat A on Friday and a really fun tracking (diving?) jump Saturday (on which I felt seriously inadequate as I was one of two people on the 7 way that didn't have a video camera). Would've done more jumping but we're getting sympathy winds here. Spent Sunday drinking cocktails and playing XBox and had a nice lunch and chat with Krisanne and her monkey b/f today. Beer paid for first "real" AFF student jump.
  8. I think there's nothing more pathetic than a middle aged (or otherwise) person who bought into the consumer culture so completely that they truly believe that whoever dies with the most crap (biggest house, most expensive car, etc) wins. Thoreau vs Trump... those who lean more toward Thoreau have far better stories to tell, imho.
  9. October isn't bad. But it can get quite cold in the high desert as winter approaches... the December morning I awoke to snow outside was one of the last mornings I awoke in that tent.
  10. A tent on a dz can be a great (and very cheap) place to live. A lot depends on the dz and the time of year (I can heartily not recommend October-December in southern California) but if the weather's decent, the dzo is cool and you've got an air mattress life ain't too bad in a tent.
  11. Correct. I am excellent proof that the AFF rating is now far too easy to get.
  12. I wish. In this case it was that the student was soooo good, he was done with his job by 10k so we all had time to kill.
  13. Hey. Nobody asked you. Oh, and before anybody asks, I paid my beer.
  14. Some instructor this person is... more interested in geeking the camera than doing her job...
  15. Respect is earned. I respect people who do the things they say they want to do. I have far less respect for those who say they want to do things but find excuses for why they can't do them and/or aren't willing to put out any effort to make them happen. Calling those who've chosen to live in trailers to chase their dreams bums is negative. If you say so...
  16. If you're gonna try to insult me, at least be original about it. Hey, thanks for the personal attack. You have a nice ban... err I mean day.
  17. You'll likely be happier if you find another sport to WANT to do, as this one is full of people who, judging by your choice of words, you consider to be beneath you, no better than the homeless guy on the corner. Despite the fact that they'll still be able to outfly you when you have 1000 jumps. What I find funny is that if you do spend the money to learn to skydive, buy gear, maintain that gear, etc., eventually you're going to figure out that most of that money is going to support a bunch of bums. And then what are you going to do with your attitude of superiority?
  18. Why wouldn't you do that yourself? Doesn't require a piece of paper... Personally, although I have a piece of paper that says I can pack my own reserve, I currently choose to have it done by someone who has more saves than I have pack jobs.
  19. At a large dropzone in the western US, it's said that you can't walk through the "ghetto" (ie the place where the bums live) without tripping over a world champion or three. Are they bums because they've chosen to live in a trailer (or, Gawd forbid, a tent) so they can chase their dream? Or are they examples of people willing to do whatever it takes to live their lives to the fullest?
  20. What's wrong with working at Walmart? It's a job, isn't it?
  21. Depends on how deep of a discount. 20% - Safe. 35% - Unsafe.
