  1. You can't keep anyone but yourself from doing things that are less than safe. What you can do is refuse to jump with him and refuse to talk about his jumps with him. People who make shitty decisions in this sport can and do survive. Ask around at the dz, I guarantee you many of the instructors you've jumped with have made shitty decisions in the past. They got lucky and nobody died before they grew up an realized that skydiving isn't really all that safe an activity and all those "recommendations" are there for a reason. . Hopefully your friend will do the same. Please let the folks at the dz you jump at know if this guy comes to jump there. Lots of folks I really like jump at that dz.
  2. A friend recently got a new Vector 3. The reserve pilot chute is packaged in a long slim fairly heavy duty plastic bag. Being environmentally responsible skydivers, we kept the packaging around for reuse after assembling the rig. And soon after discovered that said plastic bag is the perfect size to cover a mid-thigh to toe plaster cast while showering. Thanks UPT!
  3. Hey, could you set up a fund for me? I can't afford to pay for my hockey injury. I know, not skydiving, but I'm still a jumper (at least until I become a rig owner next month), and I could really use a few cool video games to pass the time with while I worry about how I'm going to pay the medical bills.

    Deuce Matters

You still matter, old man. Love and miss you.
  5. That's why I use NOAA's website.
  6. You jump at Davis? Supposed to be 5 mph breeze on Saturday. I'll be continuing to enjoy pain meds as I strive to keep my leg elevated. Might get to go for a picnic on Monday. I know, you're jealous. My life FTW.
  7. Most injuries happen on landing and tunnel time does nothing for landing skills. Tunnel time is not going to reduce your risk of injury.
  8. Vancouver played a great series. It's too bad they won it on some fucking bullshit. If the NHL really wants to grow their fan base, they have got to do something about the officiating. I'm about done watching great teams get fucked by shitty refs. That's not sour grapes, my team got fucked talking, it's happened all season long (to mostly Western conference teams). If a player can lose income and games for a mistake, why aren't the refs subject to the same? Are they professionals or not? C'mon NHL, get your shit together. Oh, and GO BOSTON!
  9. Haven't had an issue with the ankles; my skates are pretty stiff. Pulled stuff in the groin several times when we started the class but haven't done that in over a month. Not sure if that's cuz I learned to stretch right or because I (was) getting stronger.
  10. There is no one at your dz capable of teaching basic canopy control? Wow.
  11. My s/o and I have been teaching courses based on the outline in the SIM for the past three years.
  12. LOL! I got a stick to the face in our first scrimmage, a guy broke his stick on the goalies face three weeks ago and last night the s/o got a skate to the face. We love our cages and we don't care how uncool they make us look. My break wasn't from anything cool or sexy like a good hit or sliding into the boards. I got my feet mixed up underneath me when I fell. I'll be back out there, probably before I really should be. The game is just too much fun!
  13. Because one successfully jumped from airplanes in flight numerous times over a period of years without breaking a bone does not mean that one will be as lucky when taking up a new activity. Yes, we are only three months into hockey class and I broke my freaking leg at a stick time last weekend. Tib and fib. At least the shin guard kept it all in line so I don't have to get cut open, but still. That hockey shit is dangerous!
  14. Lots of whiskers in the sink and bags of golf clubs in Detroit. Just like this time last year. Round 3. Last year it was the 1 and 2 teams - Sharks and Chicago - and #2 won. This year it's the 1 and 2 teams - Vancouver and San Jose - and #2 is gonna win again. President's Trophy Curse invoked. GO Sharks!
  15. JR played with Marleau. He shared a locker room with Marleau. He has more right to say what he thinks about Marleau's play than do any of the other talking heads. And really, he didn't say anything that many fans weren't already saying. If JR's comments lit a fire under Marleau's ass, it's all good. JR has always lacked a filter; that's what I like about him. It's refreshing to hear something other than the standard party lines from someone who won't apologize for saying what he thinks.
  16. Be sure to check out the maximum weight allowance on the tandem gear. You plus the instructor equals what?
  17. Nah. Not yet. I'm hoping that JR's comments last night pissed Marleau off and we'll see something amazing out of him tomorrow. A game winner would be fitting.
  18. A framed print of a pencil drawing of a barn. It drowned in Florida. The subject barn was located across the highway from the house I grew up in. It's gone now too. Lots of really great memories there, and I miss having the picture on the wall to remind me of them.
  19. Sometimes what is supposed to happen doesn't. I'm sure "true" Sharks fans will give me shit for this, but I'm glad Detroit didn't allow themselves to be swept. I'd have been disappointed to see a team like that roll over. It's gonna be a battle tonight!
  20. Not much. A few things to consider that may not be obvious - Location - If the manufacturer of your container is located close to you, you will save money and time should you ever need their help. Riggers in the immediate area will likely be very familiar with that container. Delivery time - How long are you willing to wait? Delivery times vary by manufacturer and time of year. Comfort - Some harnesses and containers will fit/feel better on your body than others; the container brand that is perfect for me may be uncomfortable on you. The only way to figure out which ones fit you best is to jump as many as possible. Take full advantage of that demo program before you decide.
  21. There's your million dollar idea. Run with it! I'm sure you'll have no problem finding people willing to spend the ridiculous price you'll have to charge to be able to make a profit on them.
  22. It's good for him. I'm not going to get excited yet. It's not impossible to come back from 3-0, and this is Detroit we are talking about. But yay Seto! I predicted that hat trick OT goal.
  23. "I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that." - Martin Luther King, Jr.
  24. I'm teaching another canopy control course today. Twelve more jumpers in the sky who will hopefully never die in a canopy collision because they took the time to learn something new. Would sure love to see some other instructors posting the above...
