  1. Which brings to my mind a question... I still have the recovery disc from my lappie that drowned. Is it legal for me to use that OS on a different system since the one I got it with has gone on to better places?
  2. Or take the issue to the dz's S&TA/CCI. That's part of what they are there for, and they should be able to handle it diplomatically.
  3. Be sure to get the accident coverage though. The basic extended warranty does not cover things like flooding caused by hurricanes.
  4. That and the revenue gained from the old, fully paid off headquarters.
  5. If everyone is telling you that, why not listen to them? They just might know something...
  6. A better choice might be to buy a simple Protec for now and worry about a camera helmet when you're ready to start flying a camera. Even once you are flying a camera, there will be times when you'll want to jump without it. It's not simple to remove camera mounts from a helmet. Having a basic helmet for those times is a good thing. Not to mention the fact that by the time you reach 200 jumps there will probably be two or three newer, neater helmets on the market...
  7. A ski instructor friend of mine decided not to work in Tahoe this season; instead he drove to NY to work and visit his hometown. He's not real happy with his decision.
  8. Majors. Anthropology and History for the AA (2 year) degrees, History for the BA when I transfer to Sac State in 2008, then Public History for the Masters. Pretty useless as far as jobs with the big bucks go, but the big bucks weren't my motivation for going back to school.
  9. Titanium. It's not just for breakfast anymore. Enjoy the meds.
  10. Got all my fall semester grades this morning. All A's. That makes a 4.0 GPA for a total of 23 units. This is going to make my scholarship, grant and transfer applications look much better.
  11. After a good friend of mine died earlier this year, I was questioning whether I should keep jumping. After reading my post about that questioning on these forums, Cliff sought me out one day at the dz. We had a long talk about my reasoning for hanging it up and he shared his thoughts on the matter with me. Through that conversation and through his post to me here (quoted early in this thread), Cliff helped me to realize that when someone has a huge passion for what they are doing, it's not tragic when they leave us while pursuing that passion. I didn't know Cliff for very long, only since he started jumping regularly at Davis. I didn't know him very well, but his words impacted me hugely. He was one of the people I looked forward to seeing at the dropzone. I hope the fact that through his love of skydiving he touched so many people in so many different ways in some way helps to lessen your grief, if not now then at some point in the future. blue skies... lisa

    Skype??

Yay, I finally get to bring up a really old thread!!! Anybody else using it now?
  13. If my backup boyfriend is available to take me on a date, I'll be there.
  14. Here it is. My apologies for the rough edit job, and feel free to tell me that my music choices suck. If anybody would like a hi-res version (avi) and/or the raw clips (also avi), please let me know. If you're a Davis or Byron local I can have a disc for you at Davis most any weekend or at Byron the weekend of the 13th. If you're not from NorCal or can't make it Davis or Byron, PM me your snail mail address.
  15. Kristen - please know that you and Jay are in our thoughts as well. I hope his injuries aren't too bad and the pain meds are freely available. Everybody - I've spent the past seven hours going through our tapes, capturing Cliff landing and on the ground at Davis and trying to put all the clips together. I'll upload it and post a link in an hour or so. I just hope all of you don't cry as much watching it as I have putting it together.
  16. I think we have a misunderstanding here. From what you say here, it appears that you think "pattern" means which direction people should land - ie north, south, east, west. I agree, if you're the first one down everyone should land in the same direction that you did (unless of course you did a downwind, in which case I'll be landing way the fuck out there but into the wind). Either that or you mean that if you land first, everyone else on the load should do the same traditional "pattern" that you did. I don't agree with that. Am I close to what you are thinking or are the pain pills working better than I think they are?
  17. At my house it's not called the remote. It's called the penis. I handle it only when I'm sure it's okay for me to handle it.
  18. Preapologies to all who don't want to follow this way off topic, but here I go... You'd be wrong on that. Check my profile. Swooping is not and will never be something that I do. And 5 years ago I'd have been one of those pointing fingers at the swoopers - how dare they endanger my life with their antics? After some long discussions with some really good canopy pilots in the past few years my opinion has changed. Swooping isn't going to go away. I hope there will always be a place in the sport for those of us who don't want to go that fast. We have to share the air if we all want to continue jumping. The only way that is going to happen is if we stop pointing fingers at each other and start working together. You can go a long way toward preventing it by planning your landing pattern and purposely putting yourself above and away from the swoopers long before you enter the pattern. Again, refer to the post in S&T for details on how to do that. That said, we can't eliminate every risk that comes with jumping with other people. Other people make mistakes, just like we do. Those risks that we can't eliminate we have to accept. That's my opinion anyway. Worth what you paid for it. Again, my apologies to all who think this is way off topic for this thread.
  19. We've had a 60 gig Ipod for six months. So far it's been a great little toy. We really thought that 60 gigs was overkill but we've already got almost 40 gigs on it, so I'd suggest getting the most storage space you can for what you have to spend. Most of our files are mp3's ripped from personal CD's. Have had no issues putting them on the toy. We tried the FM transmitter thing but found that a simple $5-10 cassette adapter from Wally World works great with the factory stereo in the car. Haven't tried it with a "real" stereo though. My biggest complaint is that it's hard to play dj with it if you haven't spent some time organizing your files in ITunes first.
  20. That is exactly what I'm saying. Read the first post on this thread for an explanation. You are responsible for your own safety. You can control many of the risks involved in jumping with other people by being aware of them and planning to avoid them long before you enter the pattern. You are responsible for your own safety. You accepted the risk of said jackass impacting you when you got on the airplane with them. I agree. I've done more jumps without an AAD than you've done jumps. They're wonderful little black boxes; I have several friends who might still be with us if they'd had one and several more who are still with us because they had one. But that discussion is a dead horse that doesn't need to be beaten here.
  21. Contact Aerodyne and ask if they still have copies of their Tri packing video. A friend of mine had numerous whackers on a Tri until she watched the video and started packing it the way they show. As for the spanking I got on my old Spectre, there's no way to know for sure what caused it. My guess would be line dump, possibly caused by not doubling the rubber band on the last few stows. The canopy had 1100 jumps on it and needed a new lineset, but I have no idea if that contributed to the slammer.
  22. Oh, I agree that some swoopers have attitudes and won't listen. What I'm pointing out is that some of us "old timers" also have attitudes and sometimes we also won't listen. If we can all get over ourselves and work together to educate all skydivers, we can reduce the number of funerals we have to go to. Is it going to be easy? Nope. Is it a worthy goal? I think so...
  23. Lemme know when you'll be out at Davis again. I'll make a point to be there to collect those hugs. Love ya.
