It is a negative point when you are using it under the disguise of safety. Then how about if everytime you go into work or get pulled over you get strip searched looking for "drugs". You don't have anything to worry about since you don't use drugs. It is all about them taking a slice of the pie. If you don't stand for something. You will fall for anything! More airline pilots get busted for alcohol then drugs. My point is that a random drug screen policy is just a smoke screen. It's a false safety blanket for the public. Anyone who uses illegal drugs that show up on a drug screen know how to beat the system. I have worked at plenty of places that random drug screen. I know alot of people that still use drugs while they are employed there. So you have to ask yourself do you really feel safer because there is a random drug screen in place? The only way a drug screening policy would make me feel warm and fuzzy inside would be if they did them every day. It would then become too expensive for the drug addicts to beat the screening and they would quit. I do not feel safe getting on a commercial flight just because there is a random drug screen. I would feel just as safe if there wasn't one. I feel safe because there is a flight crew. A team. Lets not forget FMS too. Believe those who are seeking truth. Doubt those who find it. -Andre Gide

I am just starting out in skydiving myself. I should finish up my jumps for my A license this weekend if the weather cooperates. I jump a PD230 for my AFF. then when down to a 220. Both are 9 cells. A friend at the DZ let me use there rig with a Spectre 190 in it. The Spectre is a 7 cell. This got me questioning the diffrerences between 9 and 7. Basically the answer I got was that a 9 has more forward drive hence shallower descent path. The 7 flies slower but come down steeper. I am currently demoing a Spectre 210 but only have one jump on it due to wx. I am going to try a 190 next then a Sabre2 190. The Sabre is a 9 so it will be interesting to actually see the difference. I would assume the reason you would stay big for BASE is to keep you forward speed down. That way it would be easier to get into short tight spots. Like I said total assumption since i am not a BASE jumper. You know what they say about assuming too. Good luck on your training progression. Perhaps you can find room in your heart for both sports. Does the toxicology report show when the drug was taken? Does it prove hands down that he/she was under the influence at the time of the accident. Believe those who are seeking truth. Doubt those who find it. -Andre Gide

When do we go?? I thought military jumps didn't count in the skydiving world. Believe those who are seeking truth. Doubt those who find it. -Andre Gide

Frank I totally agree that a private business has the right to run things as they see fit. My beef is with the drug screening being used under the disguise of "based on safety". Unless you plan on screening every employee every morning then it is just a CYA ploy. If an employee uses marijuana on their day off and is completely recovered the drug test is still going to show hot. You even said what an employee does off the property is there business. What is your testing method for stress and sleep deprivation? What about the other drugs that don't show up on a standard urinalysis? If you are truly concerned for the safety of your patrons you would pay for blood and hair tests everyday. That still wouldn't screen for physical and mental fatigue. So why not just come out and say that the reason you are doing this is too cover your ass in case of an accident. We are adults. If there is someone on your staff that you are skeptical about then why did you hire them. You said that you don't have a problem firing anybody. So why not just get rid of the employees that you think are unsafe and save your business some money. It is just for safety after all. I do not use illegal drugs. I do drink beer though. Student Rigs...how long do people normally use them?
covey replied to andy2's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I bought all the small stuff first right off student status. I hated wearing an old helmets that a bunch of other sweaty heads had been in. I was content with that for a couple of weeks and a few jumps ona rental rig. I had already been looking at the used gear on the net and here. Then came across a really good deal at my DZ. So I did what any respectable married man would do. I begged my wife for the money. So now I have to pay here back, but I have a rigs of my own. I would plan on using rental gear for a little while and look around for a good deal on a used rig. That way you get a rig that has the right pack volume for you. Believe those who are seeking truth. Welcome to the forums. You will be amazed at how quickly bonds build at the DZ. Quicker and stronger than basic. Like the others have said, find a local DZ and pay them a visit. I haven't been in the sport long but have been to a couple DZs and they are both different. You will find one where you are most comfortable. There are great folks at them all as far as I can tell. Good luck in the sport. Believe those who are seeking truth. Doubt those who find it. -Andre Gide

That would be a real shitty feeling to have sticky gum caught in your throat!!! Believe those who are seeking truth. Doubt those who find it. -Andre Gide

I had to get unstable intentionally on level 6. I had to do a backflip out of the plane and then arch. I was the most uncomfortable on that ride up. Just put your hips into it and relax your upper body. If i don't keep tabs on my legs they still relax too. I am sure you will get a go on this next jump. Believe those who are seeking truth. My apologies John. I mis-read your post and mis-took it as talking about blanketing all DZs. As in a government mandate. I am all for a private business owner having complete control of his business. Even to the point of getting rid of equal opportunity. Until I am willing to put my money on the line and start my own business up, I have no right saying what someone else does with theirs. If G W Bush was my JM there is no way I would jump with him. There are several other drugs out there that will never show up on a regular urinalysis. Depression, stress, and sleep deprivation can not be tested either. Unless the do the test every morning it isn't going to really stop much except marijuana use. So you have to ask is it truly for your safety? Or does it just fall under the CYA category? Believe those who are seeking truth. Doubt those who find it. -Andre Gide

My Aff instrucor told me to get rid of it too. They said something along the lines of choking. It sucks too cause I am pilot and always chew gum when I fly. Oh well my ears are starting to get used to it wothout it I suppose. I wonder if any one has actually been choked or if it is just a sky legend? Believe those who are seeking truth. First skydiving injury and I didn't even crash?

Bummer man. Good luck on a speedy recovery. Believe those who are seeking truth. Doubt those who find it. -Andre Gide -
If I am not mistaken you have to be a legal adult or have one present at the time of your jump. I have been around enough people that are messed up on various substances legal and not. Also people stressed out and sleep deprived. You can tell when you're not comfortable around someone. If you get to a DZ and the vibe isn't right then leave and go somewhere else. If the pilot can't find his way to the plane then this should be a sign. If the TM or JM can't speak in complete sentences or keep to one topic. Cut away. Why is it that we as adults always want someone to watch out for us? Look within yourself for the answers. Believe those who are seeking truth. Doubt those who find it. -Andre Gide
