  1. I dunno. They said on the radio last night that he had been out on patrols. That I guess would have to count. We keep hearing after all that there aren't really any 'front lines' in this kind of deployment - including being on base. Besides, someone has to be a radar jockey. I guess we'll find out soon enough. Part of the quid-pro-quo of not running the story on his deployment was that journo's got access to him so I presume we'll see some docu's or something later this year with footage of him doing whatever it is he's been doing out there.
  2. Do you mean Andrew as in Prince Andrew, his uncle? As in the Prince Andrew that saw active service in the Falklands war flying a Sea King helicopter which he used to decoy incoming anti-ship missiles from HMS Invincible? I'd be surprised if they ever got into a pissing match about it, but is this really 'one up' on deliberately trying to get Exocet missiles to aim at you?
  3. Well done the UK press for voluntarily not running the story even though they'd known about it from the start. All running the story's likely to do is getting soldiers on the ground killed who would otherwise have survived. Well done the US press for running with it the first moment they get a sniff of it.
  4. At least national organisations and DZ's can claim they had ZERO cutaways last year.... course they had 1,846 riser releases...
  5. Yeah, that was your excuse... I still wonder why your dummy only had one specific section of it that you could remove and warm up... and that bit had a mains lead on it...
  6. I wonder how green their pieces will be after they get sucked through an engine?
  7. I just spit up a little.
  8. Just follow your own links! The first line of your explanation gives a link to wikipedia's article on Humans. The first line of that article says: "This article is about modern humans. For other human species, see Homo (genus). For other uses, see Human (disambiguation)." Hit the disambiguation button and wikipedia tells you: "Human may refer to any member of the Homo genus (since ca. 2.5 million years). If you follow your own links, you've already answered your own question.
  9. Just sit in the next room cleaning some guns for the duration that they're in the house and tell them you had to take your Rottweiler over to a neighbour's as it always attacks Mexicans for some reason, (apologise and say you bought it from the border patrol after a judge ordered they couldn't use it as a working dog anymore after it killed some immigrant something, you don't know all the details), and you couldn't have it in the house while they were there working or you wouldn’t have been able to control it.
  10. People always seem to forget that deployment is not going to take anywhere near as long (in ft) on a hop+pop as it does at terminal. Even the sniveliest canopy will open in a comparatively short vertical distance when deployed right out the door - you've got more horizontal component to your travel than vertical at that point anyway.
  11. And funnily enough, yesterday his profile said his wingloading was 1.37:1 (which never matched his thread title). Today he's changed it to 1.27:1
  12. Ref private property, it's not a question of one person's rights trumping someone elses – you don't have a right to go onto private land in the first place. You are only allowed onto private property with permission of the landowner – they're quite entitled to rules about granting that permission. Their land, their rules. You wanna go onto their land, you follow their rules. If their rules are that you don't bring any toffee with you, you don't bring toffee with you. Don't like their rules, don't go onto their land. No rights are being infringed as you don't have the right to be there in the first place.
  13. Two of the MR2's I used to own taken just before I switched the alloys on the Mk2 for ones identical to those on the Mk1 but 17"s instead of the 16"s on the Mk1: http://www.dropzone.com/photos/Detailed/Personal/DSC01355_107788.html
  14. Where'd you think I got the idea for my screen name? Yeah I've owned a couple of MR2's. Mk1 and Mk2s. Which one are you thinking about, a Mk1, 2 or 3? Mk1 and 2's have roughly equal boot space. Neither have any space to speak of behind the seats - certainly not when you're 6'2" like me and have to have the seat all the way back. The Mk2 rear boot space is a little bigger than the boot space in the Mk1, but the Mk1 has more space up front. If you really need more boot space you can take the spare wheel out and stick a can of tyre gunk in instead which when coupled with roadside assistance covers most, if not necessarily all, eventualities. The Mk3 has basically no boot space. There are small luggage compartments behind each seat. Don't count on carrying passengers AND rigs though. The Mk1 is one of the best handling cars ever built. The Mk2 is not quite so hot on the corners (though still very very good) but rather better off the line. The turbo versions are fun. They did the Mk1 in a supercharger too - that will out-pace even a Lotus Elise round the track. The Mk3 isn't so much of a driver's car - more for hairdressers. I've had comments about the Mk1's and 2's as being hairdressers cars too but that's usually from people who've never driven one. They're very good cars and a lot of fun to drive. Being Toyota's they'll pretty much never break down on you and will go on forever. The Mk1's suffer from rust in the wheel arches (rear worse than front, but both are vulnerable) and the red one's bleach quite badly. They fixed most of those problems by the time the Mk2 came round. Neither should give you any problems unless you buy a dog. Don't buy a G-limited version of either the Mk1 or 2 (unless modded, easily spotted by the lack of a rear spoiler). The G-limited version has significantly less HP and are generally a bit gay. If you're after mileage get an NA. Mk1 should see you into the 40's and the Mk2, high 30's when driving sensibly. If your after HP get a turboed or supercharged version, (unless modded spotted by the flared air vents on the engine cover - NA's have flat grills, the turbo grills flare upwards slightly to improve air circ.). There are lots of modded and ricered-up MR2's out there. I'd avoid them like the plague; mainly because the people who mod them are mostly twats and you'll therefore look like a twat by association... plus they've probably been driven quite badly. There's a couple of MR2 forums on line - if you're seriously considering an MR2 join one and ask lots of Q's. There are also a couple of buyers guides you can google. Both the Mk1 and Mk2 come in T-bar and sunroof models. The Mk2 also came in a tin-top. Personally I love the T-bar versions but if that's not your thing then the sunroof and tin-top's are lighter. Both T-bar versions are very easy to operate and the glass stows nicely behind each seat.

    She Said YES!

Congrats - keep the girl, ditch the shirt.
  16. What you witnessed isn't in a particularly grey area legally speaking. Under English law it was theft. If you take something for yourself out of a rubbish bin, you steal it. If you take something for yourself you've essentially agreed to put in the bin, you steal it. Ignorance of the law is no defence. If the person did what you say they did, they committed a criminal offence. Some people may have different views on the morals of what they did – but legally speaking their actions were pretty clear-cut.
  17. Where are those threads by that guy who started massive flame wars about his canopy progression last year or so? He got told by everyone he'd downsized too fast and was going to kill himself and gave everyone crap and attitude back in return - just like this guy. There were a couple of long threads in the canopy control forum at least where he was telling everyone he had natural skills and was downsizing safely under instruction and we were all just being sick bitching at him for no reason. Then of course there's the thread about him in the incident forum when he killed himself under his little canopy and everyone was bummed that he hadn't listened to them.
  18. You want to try and tell me what my friend was doing when he broke himself?? How 'bout you read HIS post not just the first one in the thread? He wasn't taking a swooping course. The info in the first post (as you often find in the incident's forum) is wrong. He was taking a canopy control course, designed to improve all-round canopy and landing skills - to make him a safer skydiver under canopy. He broke his legs when he made a 90deg front riser turn - not a swoop. Forgive me if I quote you again but: Funny that - you're telling us that you do exactly what my friend was doing when he broke both his legs. I know you say you do your turns nice and high but funnily enough, my friend thought he was plenty high enough when he made his turn! He was supposed to be coming in nice and safe just like you intend to. He made a mistake - just as you might one day. He made his mistake after 340 jumps, lots of coaching, plenty of currency, after just sitting through a canopy control course. He did this on the same make canopy as you jump, loading it at pretty much the same as you load yours. You want to pretend that it can't happen to you too then go ahead. You want to pretend that my friends accident doesn't sound exactly like a carbon copy of your present position then again – go ahead. Don't get pissed though if others want to argue over who gets your shoes.
  19. My buddies bounce thread: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=833952#833952 You've got the same loading as he did on his Sabre 2. He broke his tibia, fibula and femur. He was super current and doing a canopy control course when he broke himself. Hope you're luckier than he was.
  20. I fixed it for you: SKIL SAW: A portable cutting tool used to make studs too short. can also be used as hammer PLIERS: Used to round off bolt heads. Sometimes used in the creation of blood-blisters. The tool most often used by all women. can also be used as hammer BELT SANDER: An electric sanding tool commonly used to convert minor touch-up jobs into major refinishing jobs. can also be used as hammer HACKSAW: One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board principle. It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future becomes. can also be used as hammer VISE-GRIPS: Generally used after pliers to completely round off bolt heads. If nothing else is available, they can also be used to Transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your hand. can also be used as hammer OXYACETYLENE TORCH: Used almost entirely for lighting various flammable objects in your shop on fire. Also handy for igniting the grease inside the wheel hub you want the bearing race out of. can also be used as hammer TABLE SAW: A large stationary power tool commonly used to launch wood projectiles for testing wall integrity. can also be used as hammer E-Z OUT BOLT AND STUD EXTRACTOR: A tool ten times harder than any known drill bit that snaps neatly off in bolt holes thereby ending any possible future use.can also be used as hammer RADIAL ARM SAW: A large stationary power saw primarily used by most shops to scare neophytes into choosing another line of work. can also be used as hammer TWO-TON ENGINE HOIST: A tool for testing the maximum tensile strength of everything you forgot to disconnect. can also be used as hammer CRAFTSMAN 1/2 x 24-INCH SCREWDRIVER: A very large pry bar that inexplicably has an accurately machined screwdriver tip on the end opposite the handle. can also be used as hammer PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER: Normally used to stab the vacuum seals under lids and for opening old-style paper-and-tin oil cans and splashing oil on your shirt; but can also be used, as the name implies, to strip out Phillips screw heads. Women excel at using this tool. can also be used as hammer STRAIGHT SCREWDRIVER: A tool for opening paint cans. Sometimes used to convert common slotted screws into non-removable screws. can also be used as hammer AIR COMPRESSOR: A machine that takes energy produced in a coal-burning power plant 200 miles away and transforms it into compressed air that travels by hose to a ChicagoPneumatic impact wrench that grips rusty bolts which were last over tightened 30 years ago by someone at Ford, and instantly rounds off their heads. Also used to quickly snap off lug nuts. can also be used as hammer PRY BAR: A tool used to crumple the metal surrounding that clip or bracket you needed to remove in order to replace a 50 cent part. can also be used as hammer HOSE CUTTER: A tool used to make hoses too short. can also be used as hammer HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit. Women primarily use it to make gaping holes in walls when hanging pictures. MECHANIC'S KNIFE: Used to open and slice through the contents of cardboard cartons delivered to your front door; works particularly well on contents such as seats, vinyl records, liquids in plastic bottles, collector magazines, refund checks, and rubber or plastic parts. Especially useful for slicing workclothes, but only while in use. can also be used as hammer And of course the old.... GODDAMMIT TOOL: Any handy tool that you grab and throw across the garage while yelling "GODDAMMIT" at the top of your lungs. It is also, most often, - the next tool that you will need.
  21. hehe, I remember teaching a bunch of squaddies a year or so ago. It was a crappy weather day so there were three instructors teaching a class of 12 to PLF. We have a set of ramps - only about 2ft high or so and some crash mats in a disused hanger. Towards the end of the class and after all the basic training, standing PLF's then stationary PLF's off the end of ramps etc one of the other instructors lines them up at the end of a ramp and instructs them to proceed up the ramp and off the end straight into a full PLF without stopping at the top as we'd had them doing so far. He stuck his foot out on the mat 2-3 ft. away from the end of the ramp and told the class they had to get that far and that the first guy up would set the standard the others all had to beat. On "GO" the first squaddie proceeds up the ramp at full tilt, sprints as fast as he can to the end and leaps a good couple of metres through the air into a fairly good PLF, rolling clean off the end of the mat and onto the concrete. We three instructors just gawp open mouthed at each other thinking "fuck that shit" as the rest of the class proceed to try and beat him. Squaddies
  22. I don't know what your local rules dictate re the whole of the rig and any life spans etc - but the rig is not trash - it still has a cash value in many (if not most?) regions of the world. It's not a particularly high cash value for sure... but it's still jumpable in most places so long as it's airworthy.
  23. Why are you arguing with me? We appear to agree. So you wouldn't let someone with 6 jumps freefly... but you would advise someone with 6 jumps who's clearly asking about freeflying on his first consol to just have fun without having to worry about practicing things he learned during his AFF levels, not warn against freeflying and then proceed to attack anyone else who suggests he shouldn't be freeflying??? That's a rather odd position to take.
  24. You're being silly now; this guy isn't yet onto "the rest of his jumping career". He's still a student. He doesn't have his A yet, he's on his consols. He's still under instruction, even though his instructor isn't actually physically with him on the jump. The rules require that he still has his hand held, instructionally at least if not physically, because he's not yet licensed. Once he's licensed it's a slightly different issue. Note the difference between my advice in my first post re his first jump post qualification, and his first consol jump. I am an instructor - S/L though not AFF, hence why I invite an AFFI to comment. I would expect to have to hand-hold someone with 6 jumps and advise them against free-flying in student gear and without a safety brief. They're not yet experienced enough to know any better. Personal responsibility can ONLY work with knowledge. As we've just discussed, this guy's still in the process of acquiring his knowledge as he's still under instruction. Until he's licensed his freedom extends only so far as his instructor lets it. As for abusing it - it really does sound from his question like he's considering abusing it, either through ignorance or otherwise. That's why he needs something more than just a slap on the back and a "have fun".
  25. My first solo I arched and counted to three I think an AFF student should be getting advice from an instructor, not people with 20, 85 and 115 jumps. I don't think any of the advice given by the above people with 20, 85 and 115 jumps is very good. At best it's pretty useless, at worst it's dangerous. Consoles are training jumps. The STUDENT should have tasks to perform that should at least be self set, if not set by their instructor. Given the tenor of the OP, it looks rather much like they're thinking about going off and trying sit, HD or who knows what. Sounds to me like a brilliant way to track into the next guy out the plane or cause a premi on the loose AFF kit student's jump. In short, it sounds like a pretty good way to get the OP or someone else killed. Advice which tells someone simply to crack on and have fun while doing so is not just bad advice, it's dangerous advice.
