  1. Yeah, my mistake, I misread as the reserve seal itself.
  2. Seal threads are mostly a US thing - you don't commonly encounter them any more in many other countries.
  3. No change anywhere then - good to see! Dyson must still be working on his automatic packing device I guess.
  4. Been away from the site for a couple of years. What did I miss? I see Billy Vance's thread's STILL going. Anyone want to fill me in on say... the last 2 years of skydiving gossip?
  5. They should have processed the paperwork out of Vichy - at least give it the air of tradition.
  6. What I find ammusing is he first says the UK is "like a third world country"... ok, mildly insulting if anyone actually cared what he thought. He then says "no, no, I didn't mean it like that, I simply meant that there are lots of black people in the UK". Yeah, because being racist is better than merely mildly insulting!!
  7. 'Slims? When theys try to get on our back porch, Momma just chase 'em off with a broom.
  8. On the flip side, given that you add your own external earphones you could stick that in your pocket and get the benefit of an audible even though you don't have space for one in your helmet... kinda like the old "why do you have two - because 3 don't fit" or will save the thing getting ripped off the side of a protec by a riser strike etc.
  9. Randomly found the following excerpts of text in a long article I was reading on line the other day about Spetsnaz units during the cold war. Appeared to have been written by a Russian Spetsnaz Officer who had escaped to the West in about 1985 ish but I couldn't follow up on the source as the pages linking to the English text were all in Russian. Think it was written sometime in the late 1980's. I copied any sections relating to parachuting records/people etc as I thought you guys might be interested. Original article, (which is long and overall not really much to do with skydiving), here: http://militera.lib.ru/research/suvorov6/01.html Text follows:
  10. Same thing's happening in the UK. The problem is you have to speculate to accumulate. The banks were bailed out with loans from the public purse. This means tax payers, which means they effectively owe ME money. They can only repay ME my money if they make enough profits to buy back the share stock the govt has in their banks. The best way to make this profit is to attract the most skilled people and reward them for success. They do this by paying them money - more than the competitors. If they don't pay big, they can't attract the best skills and they won't make as much money as fast, which means the can't pay ME back. As much as it sucks to see people who caused the problem in the first place being paid massive bonuses with MY money... as a defacto shareholder I do at least have to grudgingly accept that it's a good way of getting into a postion where they can pay ME back sooner rather than later.
  11. yeah... it's just that if that advice was actually the law they'd just say "yeah, we said that, so what?"
  12. 1) this is 'news' because it's bullshit advice contrary to the law. 2) the police denigh saying anything of the sort.
  13. Just saw on a lotus forum I read this link to a thread on a biker forum... Dear God there are some stupid people out there! You only have to look through the first 2 pages... if your a car/bike geak you'll laugh your ass off. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=226570
  14. Of more interest... how in the heck to you loose a whole destroyer? (Assuming 'lost' doesn't include 'sunk').
  15. Nothing wrong with listening to Skydive Radio - awsome podcasts - very little in the way of training (especially in the early ones) but gets you very much into the spirit and culture of the sport. Lots of cool history and stories too. Would recomend it to anyone, even wuffos.
  16. You want the guy who was just involved in a 10 car pile-up because your helmet went through his windshield to be able to find you? Medical info is one thing. But contact info so you can get your helmet back???
  17. OPEC sell oil in $$. Want to buy oil - gotta buy $$ first. One of the conspiracy theories re the invasion of Iraq and the cooling of relations between the US and Venezuela is that both countries switched to selling their oil in Euros. It one of those tinfoil hat conspiracy theories that actually has a little nugget of logic behind it, (not to say I buy into it of course).
  18. There's a pic and story somewhere on here of a small bird, (say sparrow or smaller sized), stuck half way through the visor of full face helmet.
  19. Plus CH1 - you have a specific canopy handling requirement to obtain before you get your A now - theory exam and practical requirement. Packing's not required for the A but a seperate qualification is required to pack a main for another to jump.
  20. They're nylon. The only place I have this kinda setup is for my ring sight - that uses nylon bolts (I think technically machine screws) which screw into the metal mount of the ring sight holder itself as the holes are threaded.... so on that basis I'd say metal nuts wouldn't matter as that would simply mirror my setup which is how the manufacturer sells the kit. You're looking for the nylon bolt/screw to shear if snagged so I don't think the fact that it's attached to a metal nut will hurt.... I think...
  21. I think what he means is - take the hook velcro and put it on the camera; put the pile velcro side on the helmet. Hook velcro has a nasty habit of doing a lot of damage to suspension and brake lines. I wouldn't want it on my head near where I keep things like brake and suspension lines. It could also (theoretically) catch the mesh of your pilot chute on deployment, especially with a lazy throw and cause anything from a hesitation to a full blown horseshoe mal. If the brake lines are worn and furry it could also grab one of those on deployment and cause a brake-fire leading to a spinning canopy or mal. I suspect this is all rather something of a long shot, but for the sake of switching the two bits round why take the risk?
  22. American Plods don't plod though, they vroom and only in some areas are they the Bib.
  23. I have exactly these gloves and have posted a link to them on here before - probably about this time last year. Awesome gloves and don't inhibit my feel compared to bulkier snow sport type gloves.
  24. I'm not going to help you cheat on his test. He want's you to come up with questions for him - it's not the answers to those questions which will educate you or make you a safer skydiver - it's the process you go through in order to come up with the questions. If you try to short-cut that process and simply get us to do your homework for you... you don't learn jack. Then one day we may be partly responsible for you going in, or worse - taking someone else out with you. He asked you to come up with the questions for a reason. I'm not you so can't do it for you. Read the SIM - you'll have your questions, believe me.
  25. So, how was the Republican President intending to pay for war he started?
