After watching it several times it does not look like the canopy was backwards. He is flying viewers left to right and it appears he has not released the brakes. When he cuts away the reserve is deploying from the left side of the body which put his back facing the same direction as the rear of the canopy. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Gas prices and Jump Ticket Prices
mjosparky replied to Feeblemind's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
In the US 28% of fuel cost is tax imposed by different government agencies. In New Zealand 47 to 51% of fuel costs are taxes. Now whose fault is that? Why must you bring US bashing into every conversation? Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -

Why Separate HP & Standard Landing Areas Aren't Enough
mjosparky replied to jacketsdb23's topic in Safety and Training
WARNING! WARNING! Long winded response Forgive me if I am wrong but you seem to imply that HP canopy pilots are the only ones who spiral down risk other peoples lives and are always in the wrong? I am both a HP pilot and camera guy (among other things). So I frequently wait in brakes trying to match descent rates of those around me. Until I know I have a clear shot, where I won't overtake those below me. I have had to abort HP landings on several occasions do to non-HP "pilots" spiraling down and congesting the traffic pattern basically boxing me in with no outs. Most of the time due to my position at the dropzone you just have to shrug it off. If it happens repeatedly with the same people spiraling down, I usually have somebody else (I am far from tactful) mention it to the offending party. So is it an issue of HP pilots flying with reckless abandon trying to kill everybody? NO its not. Is it an issue of EVERYBODY trying to kill you until you are back in the hangar ABSOLUTELY. At least that's how I teach/taught people (including jacketsdb23) to treat every other canopy in the sky. I understand this is a very touchy topic for everybody, but it's a sport wide problem. Not just those of us that like to land with a little zip. You are right; it is not just HP canopy pilots that are a problem. It is everyone landing a parachute. If you are going to land in the main landing area then it should be required there be no spiraling, 207 turns or any other radical maneuver while in the pattern. If you were flying a standard pattern there would be no way for you to be boxed in with no outs. By trying to a HP landing in the pattern you are guilty of doing exactly what you are condemning the spiraling canopy of doing. Think about it, a 270 is a spiral. I worked with Roberts Research cartridge cutters; both guillotine and hammer, for around 15 years. Roberts is probably the largest manufacture of pyro cutters in the world. We used them on test items ranging from static line deployment to 20 sec. freefall deployment. I have packed them into the head box for the F-18 Hornet. And in all cases we would use at least 2 cutters on every application. I have seen a failure of every configuration of cutter out there. Al Frisby used to say “If you can imagine it, it can happen”. Good words to live by. And it created a far worse potential problem. It can remove from the jumper the ability to save his own life by pulling the ripcord, a component that was tested and TSO’d with the system. That is not a fix it is a mistake in my opinion. I think people forget that there is not a rig made that was tested and TSO's with any brand of AAD. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

The OP asked if anyone had any information on “Serg” or had done any business with him. Well it seems one Anthony Buckley, aka sumotony, has done business with him to the tune of $38,000 and is now taken him to court. I would say his “problems” are not independent but relevant to the topic. We just went through this with another dealer that was a great guy, gave great deals and had a wonderful reputation on these boards. You think that may be why the question was asked in the first place? There is no libel when the statement if fact. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

And there in lies the problem. As you said we don’t live in a perfect world. With the cutter above the pilot chute there is chance that a partial cut will lock the reserve container even if you pull the rip cord. I would prefer to take my chances with a loop clearing the grommets. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Did you ever think your main would be your reserve?
mjosparky replied to millertime24's topic in Safety and Training
He did not cutaway the reserve. . I'm willing to bet that if he says he did, he did. Just a matter of 'splainin'. Andy, check you dz.com email. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -

Shit looks pretty fancy, I think that would be a little of an overkill for operations to FL185. How much does one pay fpr such a setup though...? You don't want to know. My helmet the Black and Blue one was just over $1700 and I got a deal. To put 6 people up at 30,000 feet you are looking a thousands of dollars if you do it right. There was a time that I was going above 25,000 feet about once a week. It sucks. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Canopy choice for Demonstrations and flag jumps.
mjosparky replied to jmpnjunky's topic in Gear and Rigging
The 245 Sharpchuter makes a great demo canopy and can handle a flag up to 600 sq. ft. On todays market the price is great. The reason demo jumpers tend to with canopies made from F-111 type material is no one makes a big fat 7 cell with separated stabilizers that will sink straight down out of ZP that I know of. Why Separate HP & Standard Landing Areas Aren't Enough
mjosparky replied to jacketsdb23's topic in Safety and Training
Are you saying that the jumper doing a standard pattern and landing must now be the one responsible for avoiding the HP pilot? Every jumper in the pattern has the ability to become a HP on any given jump. It’s just that most of them have the common sense and maturity not to do it in traffic. If you are a regular at the dz be it instructor or video flyer you should be held to the same safety standards as anyone else. If you are not willing to do a safe landing with other canopies around you should remove yourself from the equation. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
