  1. Birds must be much smarter than skydivers, I have never seen a bird of any kind downwind a landing, leader or no leader. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  2. -20-1 20 jumps and 1 cutaway. I bought by rigger a couple of drinks. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  3. Which part? That they're designed to deploy while unstable? I guess you could argue semantics, but some container manufacters recomend being head high, for example. That sounds to me like being unstable. That reserve canopies are designed to fly straight in line twists? That seems obvious by the choice of a lowered aspect ratio. Should I presume you disagree? _Am I am not disagreeing, I just was interested in where you got your information. The only one I know of that they are required to do is open within 4 sec. with 3 line twists. (this can vary for weights above 250) AS8015-B 4.3.5 Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  4. Do you carry a hook knife? Yes, I do and, Why would I start cutting lines if I don't have to? You were the only one there, and I don't think anyone is in a position to second guess your decision. I just asked if you had a hook knife. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  5. Does this mean that if you are going to use a jumpship without a door you will take off without a seatbelt? I won't, but what do you think of an observer in that situation? I believe that is what we were talking about. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  6. This is a quote from a thread on seatbelts. being close to the open door with a seatbelt on can be dangerous. Particularly if the person is not familar with the rig. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  9. I could not find a picture, but attached is a SB on them. Sparky The attachment was to big to attach. It is about the line attachments. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  10. I could not find this on Sunpath or PD web site. Where did you find it? Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  11. Several years ago when most jump planes where powered by piston engines, there was a higher likely hood of an engine failure. This was not due to poor maintenance but the fact that piston engines do not like going up fast and coming down hard. The constant heating up and cooling down is hard on them. If the engine does fail, observers are just one more thing the pilot does not need at that time. With the increased use of turbine engine out problem are less likely to happen. Having a passenger is not the same as having skydivers on the plane. Skydivers are going up with the intent of jumping. A passenger is not. In many cases the passenger is alone in the back of a twin engine plane with the door open and no supervision. In my opinion this is a bad position to put the pilot in. If they want to observe they can always take a tandem ride. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  12. Am I alone when I think that chopping a canopy with your finger caught in the steering-line could be a painful exercise (taking the term 'chopping' a bit literally) No, you are not alone thing this. If you did cutaway in this situation, you would be doing it all with one hand. If a cutaway were called for this would be the time to use your hook knife on the brake line. If the canopy was ok and you could not clear your finger quickly, before hard deck, go to your hook knife. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  13. Lew brings up a good point. I have seen this condition before on newly assembled mains. After the brake setting is determined to be correct, a bartac or zigzag is used to finnish it off. Until then it is often left loose or finger trapped with out tacking. I use a double stitch of FF thread to hold the trap until the final setting is determined. Glad you landed without hurting the left side Lew. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  14. You will find a lot of places that say you must have the right size PC for this and that, but I have not been able to find any place that gives what the right size is. If you come up with anything, please pass on. Sparky Edit to add: If you are doing 12 a day for 4 days, my hat is off to you. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  18. This sport is so many things to so many people. But it is one thing to all. That is, you will only get out of it what you are will the but back into it. Many years ago there were several jumpers, some who helped invent what we do, who took the time to work with me. I had a national champion in accuracy teach me a little about flying a canopy, I had a couple of World champion 10 way speed star jumpers help me understand how to go fast. I had SCR 007 organize my SCR load, and got sit fly lessons from SCS-1 himself. I would feel as though I let these, and many more, down if I did not give of my time and what knowledge I have to those coming up. I have been on world records, done BASE jumps and CREW. I have flown in jumpsuits that had more material then my Hobby Cat sail. I have gone through 1000 feet with a main entanglement and been involved in testing for many years. But nothing can beat the look on a jumpers face the first time they do something new or are involved in some different form of skydiving. All jumper have been there and know what it feels like to be left out. It doesn't cost me a thing, I am going to jump any way, to make a jump with someone and watch their face light and see them smile that smile that won't go away all day. And you know what, it make me feel pretty good also. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  21. Where did you get you information? Hypoxia can start as low as 5,000 feet above the area you normally live at. As a pilot, or required flight crew, you are required to have use O2 if above 12,500 for more than 30 minutes and any time you are above 14,000. All these altitudes are MSL which means most DZ's in the US need to subtract for those figures. As Phree said, hypoxia affects different people in different ways. Have you ever been through a chamber class or flown to "high" altitudes? For you to make a blanket statement like the one above is indicates a lack of training in the physiology affects of altitude on the human body. Doesn't FAR Part 91.103 require you compute a W&B on the aircraft prior to the flight. Guessing can get people killed. It would seem that if a climb to 10.500 within the W&B limits of the aircraft is taking as long as you say, the engine might be in need of some major work. Lastly, if you would put a little information about yourself in you profile it would go a long way toward making your posts credible. If not, you come across as just so much noise in the background. jmo Sparky Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  22. The meet in 1975 was won by the US team, Capt. Hook and the Sky Pirates. The also won the 4 way event. Round, back loop, round, back loop. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  25. That is not the thread I was responding to. If you remember we were discussing a private pilot diving a C-180 nose down to avoid clouds and if in fact this type of flying was the jumpers responsibility. And according to the post he was also lost. See my statement above, "not flying safely". If you read the post in question and still contend he may have been legal or safe, your viewof safety is different than most. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
